Moral Hazard as Policy....

We see these phrases in the media now more and more. What they imply is the mutalization of all risk i.e. the risks that individual managers take of "too large to fail" institutions will be borne by the government, and therefore all of us.

If JPM or C rolled over today - would the US government let it happen? Would the IMF? Would the BIS? Of course not. We are all implictly short a load of puts on collective market risk. This incentivizes individual managers to make riskier bets (and actually forces them to do so, if they want to remain competitive). This therefore raises the strike of these puts higher and higher i.e. things can go very badly much sooner, and individual institutions are LESS insulated from market volaitlity than they were 30-40 years ago.

Sub-prime moral hazard is playing itself out now (q1 '08). Credit creation through innovation unlocks equity and allows for economic expansion. This is a reasonable policy goal. However, Moss' claim is that this innovation (unlike in Silicon Valley), comes with a built in safety net that encourages excessive risk taking.

One of the best books on economic policy out there

I bought this book on the strength of a review in The Economist and was not disappointed. With policies as varied as limited liability, central banking, deposit insurance, and Social Security, American legislators transformed government into an insurer of last resort. Sometimes they shift risk from prospective victims to those better able to afford the loss (product liability); at other times they spread catastrophic risks over the whole tax base (flood insurance). The book charts the expansion of government in the United States from the late 19th century to its zenith in the late 1970s. The author answers the objections of the Chicago and Austrian schools - Becker, Hayek, Mises, and the others - in convincing fashion thanks to its moderate tone and extensive research. The prose is clear, surprising for a book dealing with such complex subject matter. The chapter on the emergence of limited liability corporations is particularly strong. Unfortunately, the chapter on product liability could have used a bit more skepticism. Few readers will share the author's view that tort lawyers are an unalloyed blessing. The author sidesteps many of the problems we now face with exploding damage awards and wide discrepancies in the awards handed down in various jurisdictions. Nor does he grapple with the consequences these problems impose for medical research and the US insurance industry.

About the Author
Dr. Wai-Fah Chen was Professor and Dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Hawaii from 1999 to 2006. From 1976 to 1999, he was Head of the Department of Structural Engineering at Purdue University and George E. Goodwin Distinguished Professor of Civil Engineering; prior to that he taught at Lehigh University. The author of more than 300 peer-reviewed publications and author or co-author of 20 books, his primary areas of research are constitutive modeling of engineering materials, soil and concrete plasticity, structural connections, and structural stability. He received his Ph.D. from Brown University. He is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering and an Honorary member of the American Society of Civil Engineers.

An excellent guide to natural remedies for relieving symptoms of dengue fever. Thorough and well-researched. Though I consider myself a student of dengue treatment, I was unaware that one of the best remedies is tawa-tawa, which literally grows on every vacant lot here in Thailand. As a companion volume I recommend 'Dealing with Dengue', which goes deeply into dengue prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and recovery.

I have to admit, I didn't know very much about this dreaded disease that takes thousands of lives each year and according to the author, CuthBert Gobble: "takes hold of about 50 million people each year. Through a list of home remedies listed in the book by boosting one's immune system there is a cure. Dengue Fever is caused by mosquitoes and hits mostly the tropics, so first off there needs to be prevention, to prevent mosquito bites. Repairing and installing screens on windows and doors, getting rid of standing water, using Deet based repellent and other preventatives. There are two things I didn't like about the book: One, it has some typos and sometimes the language seems like it's a translation and two, there is not much stated as far a research into the various curatives, just that they work. Mr Gobble states that both Ayurvedric and Traditional Chinese medicine have done research on Dengue Fever. What I liked about the book is that it offers a cure, several cures in fact, for this dreaded malady.

The book is small but extensively researched and I like the best part of controlling the Virus transmitter mosquitoes as a better strategy, Am reading about the Tropical Diseases and how they can be controlled. The Author need to include the Mosquito nets used in controlling mosquitoes at homes, this is a basic strategy and a cheaper one that can be avoided almost by every family. However thank you for the information, found it helpful.

What not to eat - at breatkfast, lunch, or dinner!

Having read a number of articles and books on genetically engineered foods, I found this book to be very comprehensive and very well written. I highly recommend it if you are interested in your health.

As a biologist who has worked with DNA, and respect it, I place great value on Smith's easy to understand explanation on the genetic engineering process on DNA. Smith has also carefully researched FDA reports and quoted several people in his analysis of GMOs and their impact on society. With methodological precision, his research reveals the close ties of the U.S. government with biotechnology industry in several aspects of GMO production. Even more disturbing is the influence of biotechnology companies such as Monsanto, Novartis, Dow, and DuPont having on the government - they gave more than 3.5 million dollars (from 1995-2000) towards campaign contributions, with 3/4 going to Republicans.

His research also reveals the impact of the genetically modifed amino acid L-tryptophan in 1989-1990 that debilitated thousands of people with EMS, a disease that produces severe muscle pain, and even death. Forty people died from taking this L-tryptophan. This product was never labled that it was genetically modified and the Japanese manufacturer - Showa Denko KK did not use the proper filtration level to remove the impurities. Subsequent from these health risks, the product was removed from shelves.

My favorite quotes from this book came from George Wald, Nobel Laureate in Medicine. He said for genetic engineeering - "The results will be essentially new organisms, self-perpetuating and hence permanent. Once created, they cannot be recalled" and "Up to now, living organisms have evolved very slowly and new forms have had plenty of time to settle in. Now whole proteins will be transposed overnight into wholly new associations, with consequences no one can foretell, either for the host organism, or their neighbors." Those are powerful words and cannot be forgotten.

Finison explores the remarkable rise of Boston cycling through the lives of several participants, including Kittie Knox, a biracial twenty-year-old seamstress who challenged the color line; Mary Sargent Hopkins, a self-proclaimed expert on women's cycling and publisher of The Wheelwoman; and Abbot Bassett, a longtime secretary of the League of American Wheelman and a vocal cycling advocate for forty years. Finison shows how these riders and others interacted on the road and in their cycling clubhouses, often constrained by issues of race, class, religion, and gender. He reveals the challenges facing these riders, whether cycling for recreation or racing, in a time of segregation, increased immigration, and debates about the rights of women.

A delightful and thought provoking history of cycling in 19th century Boston

Excellent book with lots of interesting history about the Boston cycling craze of the 19th century. Slightly mis-titled, it's main focus is actually on racial prejudice and gender attitudes and cycling in this time period. The book's facts all jibe with local lore and family history (my grandparents grew up at the turn of the century in the local neighborhoods the book focuses on).

I learned a lot of great local history and cycling nuggets that I can't help boring my non-riding wife and friends with. I definitely recommend this book to cyclists interested in history.

You should also check out Charles Stevens' "Around the World on a Bicycle". Then sneak in to the Harvard Club of Boston on Commonwealth Ave. for a toast to Albert Pope - it used to be Albert Pope's house!. Quite a crib. Pope was a (or the) major driving force of all things bicycle in Boston. Afterward take a stroll through Mt. Benedict Cemetery in West Roxbury to honor the grave of Pierre Lallement, considered by many to be the inventor of the bicycle (unless you are Italian in which case you know for a fact that it is Leonardo DaVinci, or unless you are British and are rather positive it was actually James Starley, or unless you are Scottish and reckon it was Kirkpatrick Macmillan,...)

I look forward to meeting the author some day and sharing a ride out to South Natick.

Going down the rabbit hole...

For those that are downtrodden in their lives, who have no direction, no basic feeling of "wonder"...I suggest you try this book. Insightful, very well written and exploratory, it gives us a very clean, uninhibited view of the great "I AM" (god). For those who have not experienced this phenomenon, I suggest you give this publication a try.

Good Information and Philosophy; Not Newbie Friendly

Having loosely followed the author's internet efforts for around a year before the creation of the book, and on a spiritual path for far longer, I found the enclosed info relatively familiar. What I really appreciated about the "complete guide" was in the fact that it is indeed a complete system of belief. Further, Shawn's enlightened philosophy is unconstrictive and growth-promoting, not forcing you into a small set of specifics but focusing on the big picture, the many sandbags and cables behind the curtain of this massive stage we call life; inherent mechanics of the metaphysical universe that keep the gears turning. In terms of informational content, and the concise, cut-the-crap presentation of hard gained wisdom, I can't give I AM GOD high enough praise without sounding like a biased, gushing fanboy.

However, the very presentation that makes Shawn's book such a powerful asset for veterans of the spiritual life view makes it a difficult read for the less experienced. I tried to read a chapter or two from a more mundane viewpoint, not calling on my years of experience getting down the "feelings" of spirit, and the preconcieved understandings that came with it. It seemed very lofty and ungrounded in reality with all its spiritual terminology and reliance on notions that put humans in a more deified state than mortal. Indeed, from that view I could have halled the author arrogant without batting an eye, as that is definitely how he comes across for the uninitiated (the internet certainly proved that enough times). Because of this I can't give this otherwise stellar collection of wisdom a five. There are a LOT of people on the planet, and the vast majority of them count as "newbies" to the mindset.

So overall, "I AM GOD - And so are you!" gets a big thumbs up from me, with one huge caviat. This is not a beginner's guide to spirituality. It is an advanced series of ideas that, with the experience and preconceptions, can become the spark that kindles the fire of enlightenment, or at least better intellectual quality of life.

Incredible Insight, Credible Explanation

In short, this book contains everything one needs to understand reality in a way that truly satisfies. The lessons it gives allow readers to take total control over their lives in ways which impact every area of one's being, as it shows that all change comes from within. Does this seem too good to be true? Many of us think so, but those who understand the core truths of reality will not only believe it, but understand why to believe it. This book is a great first step along that path. It provides incredible insight while remaining astoundingly credible.

I happened to come across Dall's lessons just as he was beginning to publish them online, and through applying them to my life, I have become fully content with who I am and what is around me. I saw that the "cure-all solution" that I sought was everywhere around me the whole time.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Be you religious or atheist, young or old, fortunate or unfortunate, you will find something of value here.
