Beyond fruits and vegetables, the chapter also gives instructions for freezing, breads, pastries, dairy, meat, and complete meals.

The chapter on canning offers information on high- and low-acid canning as well as the differences between water-bath versus pressure canning, with detail on proper use of jars, lids, and bands, selection of the right utensils, instructions for filling the jars, and safe storage. This chapter offers 15 water-bath canning recipes and 12 pressure canning recipes for the most popular fruits and vegetables (tomatoes, apples, berries, pears, peaches, and more).

excellent for beginners

I recieved this bood as a gift and it is very well written and concise. It is a basic book, so if you are an experienced canner it may be to light for you. If you are a beginner the detailed instructions and information how and why things are done is excellent. I would reccomend this book for any beginner.

This is a really great book. I have not tried anything yet at the time i am writing this, but everything seems well written & detailed. If you have Ball's Canning Book this will give you some more options and expand on those recipes.

Though not all of these 10 short stories are equal in their teen appeal, those that have it are clever and surprising. "Jubilee," for example, concerns two neighbor girls home from Stanford for the summer. Parker, the oldest, is the daughter of a ranch owner, while scholarship student Andrea's father is a worker on the ranch. Andrea has a chip on her shoulder about Parker's wealth that spills over in ugly, unexpected ways. In the title story, teenage Frances rides her father's bus to the downtown fiesta but gets in over her head when she flirts with a "painter." Each of the stories is set in a rural New Mexico—a setting not often represented in fiction. Most feature characters with unrelenting hubris being forced to examine their often prejudiced attitudes toward others. The role of religion is examined in three different stories. In "The Five Wounds," Amadeo is hoping to play the role of Jesus in this year's Good Friday celebration when his foul-mouthed, pregnant teenage daughter arrives on his doorstep. In "Family Reunion," Claire goes on vacation with her Mormon neighbors, but Mormonism isn't what she thought it might be. Finally, in "Ordinary Sins," a woman works at a rectory and gets drawn into a conflict between the beloved older priest and the strict newcomer. This work offers dark and often hopeless but thoughtful portrayals of working class New Mexicans from different perspectives. Kirstin Valdez Quade has received a "5 Under 35" award from the National Book Foundation as well as the Rona Jaffe Foundation Writers' Award and the 2013 Narrative Prize. Her work has appeared in The New Yorker, Narrative, The Best American Short Stories, The O. Henry Prize Stories, and elsewhere. She was a Wallace Stegner Fellow and Jones Lecturer at Stanford University and is currently the Nicholas Delbanco Visiting Professor at the University of Michigan.

Required Reading for Programmers (and Everyone Else)

I have a lot to say about this book, primarily because it is one of the few books I've read that has been amazing in pretty much every way:

* Its purpose is clear and useful: how to manage your time better.
* The writing is thoughtful, pragmatic, and extremely captivating: the author does an excellent job conveying his thoughts to you in the text.
* The flow of the book is simple and straightforward.
* The illustrations in the book are fun, educational, and beautiful.
* The layout of the book is structured in a very intuitive way: each section covers various short topics, each about a page in length. This makes it very easy to flip through for later reference, and find information on specific topics.

If you're wondering whether or not to buy this book: do it now! I promise you will enjoy it, and the benefits greatly outweigh the cost.

This book teaches you the Pomodoro Technique--a simple time management technique that has been around since the 80s. The main points of the Pomodoro Technique can be summed up as follows:

* The human mind is awful at multitasking.
* When you are intensely focused on a single task, you work more effectively, and feel more productive.
* Procrastination stems from anxiety about the future.
* You are less likely to procrastinate if you know that you only need to do a small thing.
* A single Pomodoro is a 25 minute chunk of working time, followed by a break.
* By working on a single task for a 25 minute chunk of time, you are able to focus intensely on a single task and make a lot of progress.
* After a 25 minute chunk (a Pomodoro), you reward yourself with a short break.
* Before starting a Pomodoro, you analyze your responsibilities, and pick the most urgent thing that needs attention.
* When you work on your Pomodoro, you make a contract with yourself to intently focus on the task at hand, and nothing else.

Essentially: the Pomodoro technique is a simple time management technique that helps you stay productive, and relaxed. It helps combat stress by forcing your attention to a single thing at a time, which subsequently improves mood, productivity, and excitement.

This is an *awesome* book. It should be required reading for anyone who does any sort of work that requires extensive brainpower. Since reading this book, I've been practicing the Pomodoro technique almost every day, to great results:

- I feel much more relaxed while I'm working.
- I feel a greater sense of accomplishment at the end of the day.
- I know that I'm making progress on my projects.
- I'm able to really enjoy what I'm doing at a much higher level than I was before.

To me, the Pomodoro Technique *feels right*. It feels natural. It's not one of those things that you read about, and never implement because it is time consuming, confusing, or difficult: it is easy, and you will *want* to do it!

I highly recommend this book.

I'm a Fan of Pomodoro Technique, But Not of This Book

I read about the Pomodoro technique online, so I was interested in trying a book on it. I saw this one in my local bookstore and got it, and it was not an enjoyable experience at all.

There is just too much information in the book that is mildly interesting but tangential at best in relation to the Pomodoro Technique. Some of the information seemed marginally relevant, and I kept waiting for the author to tie it into the technique and he didn't. Also, the prose is very painful to get through. It feels like maybe an engineer would get more out of this dry reading experience.

I wanted to rate this higher because I'm a fan of the technique and the author seems like a nice, enthusiastic fellow, but I had to really force myself to finish the book. Later on I realized the actual creator of the Pomodoro Technique has a free downloadable PDF available on his website that explains the technique in a more concise and straightforward method. I downloaded that and read it and it was far more enjoyable and helpful to me.

Interesting Productivity Approach

The Pomodoro approach basically is perform tasks within a time-boxes with a timer enforcing the timebox. The basic approach suggests a 25 minute timebox with relaxing and retrospection outside of the time-boxes. It is a well written book that is easy to read with some lots of sketches that were watercolored by the author. There are also mindmaps of each chapter although they were not all that helpful to me. I have been convinced to try to the technique as an execution technique below a GTD task tracking system. There is a free pdf-book by the inventor of the technique which is also worth reading. This book contributes additional useful process to the method. Pragmatic Programmers (the publisher) has mobile versions of the book.

About the Author
Kevin Ryan, Ph.D., Stanford University, is Professor Emeritus of Education at Boston University School of Education. He is also the founding director of the Center for Character and Social Responsibility. A former high school English teacher, Dr. Ryan was a tenured faculty member at the University of Chicago and the Ohio State University before moving to Boston University. In 1970 Ryan was granted an Alfred North Whitehead Fellowship at Harvard University. Since then he received the Boston University Scholar-Teacher Award, the National Award of Distinction by the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education, and the Paideia Society's Award for Educational Excellence. Ryan has written and edited 22 books and over 100 articles on teacher and character education. He is also the author of TEACHING FOR STUDENT LEARNING: BECOMING A MASTER TEACHER (with James M. Cooper, ©2012, Cengage); THOSE WHO CAN, TEACH, 14th Edition (with James M. Cooper and Cheryl Bolick, ©2016, Cengage); and the editor of KALEIDOSCOPE: CONTEMPORARY AND CLASSIC READINGS IN EDUCATION, 13th Edition (with James Cooper, © 2012, Cengage).

James M. Cooper is Professor Emeritus from the Curry School of Education at the University of Virginia, where he served as Commonwealth Professor of Education (1984-2004) and Dean of the School (1984-1994). Cheryl Mason Bolick, Ph.D. North Carolina State University, is Associate Professor and Director of Research and Professional Development for Outreach at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She was previously a faculty member at the Curry School of Education at the University of Virginia. She is an Academic Leadership Fellow at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and was a Sallie Mae National First Year Classroom Teacher after her first year of teaching. Her scholarly contributions primarily address areas of teacher education, social studies, education, and instructional technology. She has authored or co-authored 17 books or book chapters and 41 peer-reviewed journal articles.

Nice Overview, but how do you view the video clips?

I got this for my "Intro into Education" class. This is okay as far as a textbook goes--of course, way too high priced, but that is the way with any required text. I thought the authors did a fine job of outlining all the basics of teaching, and found most of the material (especially the case studies) very interesting and thought provoking. The book touched on many topics, including possible pitfalls, legal rulings and court cases, standards, the history of education, job opportunities, professional development, the role of the teacher, educational philosophies, etc. One feature that especially interested me was the TechSource Video clips. I am interested in seeing how other educators manage their classrooms, employ certain techniques, and help their students to succeed. The book did not say how to view these clips at all (or I missed it if it did). Do I need to purchase an extra key card or something to do this? You would think that for the price it would be included! Anyway, if anyone knows where I need to go or what I need to do to watch these videos, please let me know! Thanks!

There were no bends or rips in it so that was great! I would say that it is way too ...

I ordered this because I needed it for one of the classes I was in . This arrived on time and was covered in bubble wrap. There were no bends or rips in it so that was great ! I would say that it is way too expensive but I guess you will have that with any school book you need .
