Loads of helpful info. Before buying be aware, this is primarily a step by step guide of how to plan your trip and has little about what to do when you're actually in individual cities. I doubt I'll actually bring it with me to Europe. Definitely worth it though!

A well organized travel guide for novices

Fantastic guide for First time European traveler. The book is easy to read and designed in sections, the first half is "Travel Skills" and generally good helpful advice for travel. The second half is specific to each country. It hits the highlights and Rick's rating system for "must see's" is very helpful. I will definitely get the books for specific countries where I will be traveling for a more in depth look at these places. Overall, a very useful travel tool.

If you ever want to travel to Europe you could have NO better guide than this one. I watched Rick Steve's television program one night and saw this advertised and it is SO good I've been reading it cover to cover. This is PACKED with GREAT information about how to pack, how to get the best prices, how to enjoy your trip, how to avoid being the victim of a pickpocket, etc., etc., etc. This is worth every single penny you pay for it.

learn it....love it....LIVE IT!

My friends all think I hate movies. This isn't true, but I admit that I'm often reluctant to see them--like most important artistic media (contemporary poetry and the plastic arts, to say nothing of ubiquitous pop music), there is too much worthless drivel to wade through.
I've always held that cimema can be a powerful artistic medium, but until recently I was much too ignorant of classic films. A life-long student of literature, I decided to educate myself in 'reading' films. This book is where I started--correction: this book, my local dvd rental store, and a friend to watch some great movies with.
I'd known of Bogue's three-volume study of Deleuze and the Arts (see my review of Bogue's _Deleuze on Music, Painting, and the Arts_), so after my cinema-knowledgeable friend drew up a list of the 50 most important classic films I needed to know, I ordered a copy of _Deleuze on Cinema_.
This book, like the others in the series, is not a "Deleuze for Dummies." Bogue--like Deleuze--assumes quite a bit of knowledge on the reader's part. This is refreshing. It's a supplement--something to read in preparation for watching the movies as well as for making sense of them after the show's over. Just paging through the ample index will offer a taste of what's offered: directors include Hitchcock, Resnais, Eisenstein, Robbe-Grillet, Bunuel, Godard, Bresson, Kurosawa, and Antonioni, among others.
Take this insightful passage on Orson Welles as one example of the clarity and brilliance of Bogue on Deleuze: "In each of Welles' films, sheets of the past coexist within a transpersonal memory, but Deleuze argues as well that in individual shorts one can actually see characters inhabiting a region of time....Deleuze observes that others before Welles had used deep focus shots, but usually with the planes of the image remaining relatively isolated from one another. What Welles achieves by contrast is a communication and interpenetration of foreground, middle ground, and background, each shot a dynamic space-in-depth" (pgs 142-43).
This book will be of essential interest to students and lovers of Deleuze, film, literature--and especially to those who, like me, need a little extra meat and potatoes with their buttered popcorn.

I am a graduate student in French Studies who is interested in Deleuze but weak in theory. I read Bogue's 'Deleuze on Cinema' in three days and wrote this on my Facebook page:

If you're using Ronald Bogue's 'Deleuze on Cinema' as a 'Deleuze for Dummies' and finding it barely any easier than Deleuze, keep reading. Bogue repeats and repeats terms and concepts from previous chapters and uses fewer but more detailed examples from specific films. Hang in there with it. At the end, you will feel confident enough to crack "the actual" (ahem) Deleuze.

Betrock's Landscape Palms is just what I needed. I live in Miami and my yard already has an assortment of palms. I love palms and wanted to add more and different palms to my landscape. Without overwhelming me with every palm on earth, this book gave me a good selection of palms with needed information to make the right choice. Easy to ready and plenty of pictures I highly recommend it if you are interested in palms for any reason.

Tropical Gardening in Panama too

I bought this book a few years ago for my parents' second home in Panama, so we could identify and choose the right palms we wanted for landscaping their new home. It's been a great resource and for palms, I haven't found others that compare. I like the great layout/format of each page with its simplicity, all the necessary information provided for choosing the right palm, and the photos. (Be sure to look inside) It gives the description and habits of each palm, growing conditions and tolerances, problems to be aware of, and other helpful tips with great photos to identify just the right palm for the right location. "Creating Minnesota: A History From The Inside Out" by Annette Atkins (Professor of History at Saint John's University and the College of Saint Benedict) is a superbly written history of how Minnesota evolved from a wilderness territory into a modern American state. In a model of accessible scholarship, Professor Atkins lays out Minnesota's achievement of statehood amidst the competing interests of indigenous natives, traders, farmers, townsmen, and politicians. There are illustrative and fascinating stories such as the family in St. Paul who managed to celebrate Christmas in 1898 with fruit that originated some 1,500 miles from their home. Professor Atkins also includes a photo essay of Minnesota communities as recorded by the cameras of local and itinerant photographers; the role of the railroads; even such culinary traditions as pan-fried walleye and walleye quesadillas. Very strongly recommended for personal, school, and community library American History collections in general, and Minnesota History shelves in particular, "Creating Minnesota" is an entertaining a read as it is informed and informative.

The Best in Minnesota History

I have read many Minnesota history books from the seminal state histories by William E. Lass and Theodore C. Blegen to works recently published for the state's sesquicentennial. But nothing can equal the incite and creativity offered by Annette Atkins in Creating Minnesota. I first discovered Atkins's work in Minnesota, Real & Imagined: Essays on the State and Its Culture where she provided an essay entitled "Facing Minnesota" and so I was very excited to read her new book on Minnesota history.

Atkins's approach is that of a seasoned historian who approaches her topic with sensitivity and intelligence. She is aware of her own limits as a historian and the ways her identification as a white, female, South Dakotan can affect her narrative. Furthermore, she does not shy away from the existential questions that any good historian must ask: Why do we study history? Who are we studying when we study history and how do we decide that they are the ones worth studying? How does our position in the narrative affect how we look at history?

But Atkins is not all academic theorizing, however valuable such theorizing may be. Her writing is readable, smart, and often funny. She plays with format in this book by telling the story of Minnesota by turns in broad strokes, with specific case studies, and in the form of a one-act play (an experiment that sometimes works and sometimes doesn't). What is most striking about her work is the humanity that comes forth when reading her stories. Glancing over the section of pictures, I am struck by the faces of the individuals who once called Minnesota home. Their stories are the ones that Atkins strives to tell in one way or another and, in my opinion, she exceeds all expectations.

Lyrical essays on the land and the people.

Annette Atkins can write the heck out of a story. Her lyrical history of Minnesota is thematic, personal, and a bit quirky. There are chapters in this book that soar, and there are chapters that touch on the mundanity of Minnesota history. I would read an essay by this author, on any topic that touches her heart or mind, in a minute. This book contains several such. My only mild critical comment is that this book would have been even better with more Annette, and a tiny bit less Minnesota, if that is even possible.
