Excellent resource for students, civil engineers, and tunnel engineers

I have recently had the opportunity to read and review this new book, Practical Tunnel Construction. I found it to be an easy to understand overview of pretty much all aspects of tunneling. It covers basic geology and, more importantly, engineering geology as it relates to tunneling in both hard rock and soft ground. The book then describes tunnel construction including equipment used for mining, mucking, grouting, blasting, ventilation, and ground support. Throughout the book, historical tidbits add color and interest. For example, I had never known about the massive sapping operation on the Messines Line in World War I.

I think that this book will be a terrific resource for students, civil engineers, and tunnel engineers. For college students, this would be an excellent textbook for an introductory tunnel engineering class as a civil engineering elective or as a step into a tunnel engineering program. If I were to teach such a class, this would certainly be my textbook. For civil engineers specializing in other branches of our profession, this book would provide a quick way to get up to speed with tunneling concepts and terminology. Practical Tunnel Construction is a must read for government engineers that are about to have a tunnel constructed in their city. Finally, I must disagree with the author's introductory statement that this book is not written for his peers. While I did not discover much new information, I found this book to be a very helpful resource in my work. Dr. Hemphill has pulled together key parts of many current and classic texts that I refer to time and again. Thanks to his documentation, I can easily find certain graphs, tables, and figures that guide me to the more detailed source books in my collection.

Great ML book!

I would say this book is ideal for anyone who knows some Machine Learning basics and has experience with Python, but it's also a great book for beginners who want to learn about practical ML problems. I've taken Andrew Ng’s Stanford Machine Learning courses in the past, and converting the theories into code isn't always intuitive. However, this book teaches you how to implement those algorithms into code, with lots of practical problems and easy-to-understand example code. Also, the additional graphs and images helped me visualize the concepts. Highly recommended!

After 14 years in the Post Office he resigned at age 50, he says, to keep from going insane. He now claims to be unemployable and eats typewriter ribbons.

About the Author
Charles Bukowski was born in Andernach, Germany in 1920 and brought to Los Angeles at age three. Using the city as a backdrop for his work, Bukowski wrote prolifically, publishing over fifty volumes of poetry and prose. He died in San Pedro, California on March 9, 1994. His books are widely translated and posthumous volumes continue to appear.

A great collection

The very first story in this collection solidified this work and the author as more than the average writer for me. The lead story for which this book is named is the best story in the whole collection. It shows the power of Bukowski like no other story can. While so much of the rest of this book is filled with his self-righteous condemnation of the world that hasn't seen the "truth" as he has, the lead story stands out as a really beautiful and outstanding story. This book is worth the price of purchase for that story alone.

Of course the rest of the book is filled with the wonderful Bukowski filth and flare for the seedier sides of life which makes for a great read as well. Life In A Texas Whorehouse and Six Inches are just fun stories that are great reads that make you feel like you need a shower after reading.

The problem I have is with stories like The Gut-Wringing Machine which is another story where you get to see how delusional everyone else is that hasn't seen the light like Bukowski has. I have no problem with this or any other author exposing normal folks delusions about there own mediocre existence, but I generally like to have the writers exposing these delusions or our society to be a little more introspective themselves.

This is a great collection of stories that will entertain and make the reader cringe at the same time. This entire work has the blunt charm and brazen language that makes this author wonderful to read. Other than Ham On Rye this is his most powerful work.

Chuck Buk, what more to say. Raw, Raunchy, Buk. Never got over himself. Never got over writing it all down. Never got over being drunk, I guess. This is the 1st part, "Tales of Ordinary Madness" is the 2nd part, BUY BOTH. Use them for BATHROOM READING if nothing else, I do, and for reading on transit on the way to work, and at lunchtime at work eating and reading at my desk. My co-workers do not know...

Intriguing

For those who do not have time and/or focus to read an entire book from cover to cover, these short stories are perfect. You can pick it up and read a few, do something else, then return and not missed a thing. The stories themselves are very well written, intriguing and creative. The way Bukowski incorporates his own dark experiences and thoughts with embellishments is what make him such a good read. Highly recommend!

Rich Dad broke the code.

I ordered this book with a skeptical outlook. The other financial instruction books I purchased for my teen lasted all of ten minutes. This book arrived, she opened it, started reading, and didn't put it down until finished. She was so excited, she called me at work to tell me she had learned about assets, liabilities, expenses, and income. She said the concepts were so simple, she didn't understand why they aren't teaching this in school. Now, she's pointing out investments to me! Rich Dad actually got the attention and respect of a teenager. I'm very impressed.

Help Your Kids Save Their Pennies

This is a children's comic book that presents kids with the information that goes way beyond "Save your pennies and the dollars will take care of themselves." There are also subtle lessons on values and ethics, too. It shows--pictorially, using two different styles--how a youngster can put the concepts they represent immediately to work. The book goes well beyond the "save your pennies" philosophy I was raised on. The book introduces terms that some kids never hear until they take their first economics class. I liked the presentation style that looks vaguely like a Tim Allen movie--artistic washes, subtle tones. Kids will love the brightly colored segments. More importantly--for the parents at least--they are sure to absorb some sound ideas about ensuring their own futures. The purpose of the book is clear: the sooner you learn to manage your money, the more you'll have to enjoy.

This is the best book ever on dating

This is the best book ever on dating. It really emphasizes the importance of respecting yourself as an amazing woman, and how woman in general are amazing, but we sell ourselves short. Exposes that the current culture of dating literally leads to dating failure for women, and how you can change that for yourself. Let's just be honest - women want a loving relationship, not no strings attached sex. And we deserve that. But current dating expectations think that you can be physically intimate without being in a loving relationship. Women always expect that being physically intimate is some step towards being in a relationship, whereas most men totally disassociate being physically intimate from being in a relationship. So, why do it, girls??? It literally is soul crushing. Wait till you are in a committed loving relationship, and he has proven that he is interested in you as a person, not a readily available willing girl. This book talks about being honest with yourself and what you want, and then helps you restructure your dating life to get what you want. It is so empowering to say no to what you do not want or what isn't good enough. It's difficult at first, but afterwards you will feel amazing and empowered because you have realized the importance of yourself and how valuable you are and acted in a way that affirms this. It is way more of a thrill than anything you could have gotten from a guy who you're not sure will call you again. You can do it!!

Dr. Joy DeGruy is a priceless asset to us all. She has lifted the bandages from the 400 year-old abscess of slavery that remains un-healed. Many black and white Americans have been taught that slavery ended by legislative means in 1865 - so the issue is neatly side-stepped in school curricula, print and broadcast media. However, the hallmark of classroom teaching and responsible journalism must be proper context - for full understanding. Very Validating, Especially in the Wake of Michael Brown's Death

I had came across this phenomenal lecturer on Youtube.com (from the advice of my mentor) and knew instantly that I wanted to hear more of what this woman had to say. This book is a great supplement to her Youtube.com video at http://youtu.be/PMVRyD4UlHk?t=20s. The Youtube video could stand alone; whereas, this book is icing. The Youtube seemed more detailed, especially in terms of cognitive dissonance and other things like the postcard pictures of lynchings. I think the video is more recent and therefore there are more supporting facts. Regardless, this should be required reading for African Americans, especially in an academic setting.

Even though America has a tarnished past, especially when it comes to the stain of slavery and the subsequent treatment of African Americans, this book offers hope and concrete steps to heal from PTSS. This book has touched me at a deep level, just hearing about other people's reactions was very validating, especially when it comes to anger seething beneath the surface.

One thing that I enjoyed learning through the video that wasn't in the book was that the Statue of Liberty's chains (not shown in most photos or on film) was supposed to symbolize America's abolition of slavery in 1865. We don't hear about that, but this has been a fact verified on the government's website at www.nps.gov/stli/historyculture/abolition.htm. This woman is phenomenal and I hope the truth continues to come out.

I was amazed to identify so many traits that I have practiced all my life and did not realize the connections to my past history. I highly recommend this book to all who have been inheritants and survivors of degradation and miserys suffered in past generations and handed down as measures of protection and survival of our race in America and elsewhere.

A Starting Point for Black Healing

This was a good read. Though I am quite late on reading this, I imagine that this book likely had a greater impact between 2004-2010 when the idea of intergenerational trauma was somewhat in its infancy. The science behind this concept is still being researched to bolster its validity. I appreciate that PTSS is proposed as a THEORY and that she elucidates the semantics of scientific jargon for those who may be uninformed. She offers her theory to indirectly explain cultural, behavioral, and environmental influences of maladaptive behaviors that are specific to the black community. PTSS is not a clinical diagnosis and she clarifies this. The language carries both a formal and informal ambiance; it's direct and simple enough to comprehend, but it's not underwhelming either. She is honest enough to declare that because of the broadness of this theory, healing (treatment) cannot be simplified to a few tasks. She essentially uses her clinical experience and her cultural/spiritual journey to Africa to inform a social and self healing for African Americans. The historical background is somewhat refreshing, but to the experienced scholar it's more of a review. I also appreciate her using the DSM to explain her theory while differentiating from an actual diagnosis. The book overall is somewhat of a starting point for the African American who is seeking to understand themselves, their culture, and their history. It's littered with many relevant and inspiring quotes from other Black influentials. I warn people to apply her theory very lightly after reading because behaviors can stem from other influences and personal experiences that are not racially motivated. PTSS is essentially a cultural syndrome with a possible genetic basis: a rousing and intriguing suggestion to help a collection of people unify and rise to power without using fear as a weapon. I am coupling this book with Isis Papers (which is more scholarly, detailed, and relevant) to gain more understanding of the oppressive system that has created this cultural syndrome. Highly recommend for any Black student of psychology!
