Not Exactly an Accurate Portrayal....

Although the intent is there, the biggest problem with this book is that Mr. Bryant highlights a number of CEOs who can hardly be called role models for corporate success or ethical behavior.

Among the people Mr. Bryant interviewed for his book are CEOs of companies that are hardly success stories or to be admired on any level for their leadership qualities. CEOs whose personal comments on "leadership" and "success" do not mirror their actual real world business practices or corporate ethics in any way.

Many of these CEOs are the ones who can be blamed for the failings of corporate governance and leadership over the past decade. Ethical, strategic and operational lapses that were direct contributors and causes of this country's recent economic collapse. CEOs who should have known better and acted much better, but looked the other way, fought and ignored regulation, and personally profited from the collapse.

This book required much more research. Mr. Bryant should have included interviews with former top executives who worked for these CEOs to meaure and examine the very real differences between these CEO's self-glorifying and personal perspectives of themselves and their performance, against the reality of what they practice in the real world and have actually accomplished.

Dining on brain food at a "metaphysical table" with mostly CEOs

What we have in this volume is a "buffet" of "nuggets" from about 75 interviews of mostly CEOs that Adam Bryant conducted over a period of several years, interviews featured by The New York Times in its Sunday edition. Several of those interviewed are prominent but most were not familiar, at least to me, when I first read what they had to say about what they did as well as about how and why they did it.

Bryant is wise not to present one interview after another, in alpha or chronological order. Rather, he divides the material into three parts (Succeeding, Managing, and Leading) and cherry picks from the interviews whatever is most relevant to the given topic or insight. For example, consider this extended excerpt during which he shares what he learned about "passionate curiosity," the subject of the first chapter.

"The C.E.O.'s are not necessarily the smartest people in the room, but they are the best students -- the letters could just as easily stand for `chief education officer.'

"'You learn from everybody,' said Alan R. Mulally, the chief executive of the Ford Motor Company. `I've always just wanted to learn everything, to understand anybody that I was around -- why they thought what they did, why they did what they did, what worked for them, what didn't work.'

"Why `passionate curiosity'? The phrase is more than the sum of its parts, which individually fall short in capturing the quality that sets these C.E.O.'s apart. There are plenty of people who are passionate, but many of their passions are focused on just one area. There are a lot of curious people in the world, but they can also be wallflowers.

"But `passionate curiosity' -- a phrase used by Nell Minow, the co-founder of the Corporate Library -- better captures the infectious sense of fascination that some people have with everything around them.

"'Passionate curiosity,' Ms. Minow said, `is indispensable, no matter what the job is. You want somebody who is just alert and very awake and engaged with the world and wanting to know more.'

"Though chief executives are paid to have answers, their greatest contributions to their organizations may be asking the right questions. They recognize that they can't have the answer to everything, but they can push their company in new directions and marshal the collective energy of their employees by asking the right questions."

Bryant carefully selected chapter titles that, with few exceptions, specify or at least imply one of the core ingredients of great leadership at the C-level. They range from "Battle-Hardened Confidence" (Chapter 2) through "Bananas, Bells, and the Art of Running Meetings" (Chapter 9) to "Small Gestures, Big Payoffs" (Chapter 14). Those interviewed acknowledge mistakes made and what they learned from them, they explain how they interview and what they do (and do not) look for, and at least some of them indicate an endearing sense of vulnerability when citing the pressures and frustrations as well as loneliness when having to make tough decisions. Most of those interviewed seem to spend much more time in the trenches than in a corner office.

In the foreword, Bryant explains, "For this book, I was interested in pursuing a different story line about CEOs - their own personal stories, free of numbers, theories, jargon, charts, and with minimal discussions of their companies and industries." I presume to add that, in the case of the most prominent executives (e.g. Microsoft's Steven Ballmer, Cisco's John Chambers, Zappos' Tony Hsieh, Disney's Bob Iger, and Ford's Mulally), Bryant elicits remarkably frank comments that might not otherwise be shared if the corporate equivalent of "palace guards" had been involved.

Bryant notes that he was reminded of the first line of Tolstoy's novel, Anna Karenina, after interviewing dozens of executives: "'All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.' Many of the CEOs I interviewed resembled one another in their approach. They listen, learn, assess what's working, what's not and why, and then make adjustments. They are quick studies and they also tend to be good teachers, because they understand the process of learning and can explain what they've learned to others. They seem eager to discuss their hard-earned insights, rather than holding on to them as if they were proprietary software."

To a significant extent, the same can be said of Bryant. He not only asks the right questions and elicits thoughtful responses; he also creates what (to me) resembles a mosaic of insights, revelations actually, that suggest all great leaders are alike but each has her or his own unique ways of deciding what is most important and, therefore, what must be done. Bryant characterizes his role as "dinner-party host, encouraging lively discussion and pointing out connections among the people gathered." He succeeds brilliantly but, in my opinion, he accomplishes much more than merely allowing those interviewed "to share their stories in their own voices." Those interviewed comprise a chorus of great voices and he is the skillful conductor of what now awaits those who read the book.

Author took time to synthesize the stories he collected

"The Corner Office" draws on the CEO interviews that Bryant has been doing for two-plus years for a weekly NY Times column of the same title. But the book is NOT just a reprint of his columns. Instead, Bryant sifts, sorts, and summarizes key takeaways of what his CEO subjects have variously told him. In each of the book's three major parts, Bryant sets out the career-changing practices and attitudes he has observed, illustrating them with real-life stories, quotable quotes, and "what seems to have worked for me" pointers from his subjects. Great reading for any manager, whether or not she aspires to the corner office.

You are not a "Dummy" if you read this book.

I met the author at a meeting of the Institute of Real Estate Management in Chicago several years ago. I hold the same "Certified Property Manager (CPM)" designation. So, I did a double take recently when I saw this book on the shelf of a book store. And I did a triple take when I saw that Robert had written it! Robert Griswold is an educator, and it shows in the book. I've been in property management for over 20 years and I bought the book and took it home for several evenings of enjoyable reading. (By the way, my wife thinks I'm nuts! I can't leave my work at the office.) Robert Griswold writes at the easiest common denominator. The book is entertaining and answers the wide variety of questions. Most property managers are "generalists", meaning you have to know a lot of things about a lot of topics: collecting rents, fixing up space, evicting tenants, dealing with difficult people, roof specialist, bookkeeper/accountant, landscape specialist, plumbing specialist, HVAC specialist, etc., etc. One thing that any property manager will know, it is a very detailed career. If you are a person with an interest in property management, a novice or a long-time veteran, this is a must-read book.

Great guide for the property owner

This is an excellent guide for the property owner who wishes to manage his/her own property. Importantly, this volume includes a chapter on the issue of whether to manage the property yourself or retain a professional property manager to do it. The pros and cons are weighed. Key issues for the owner are evaluated with the most important (with the possible exception of safety and security) being tenant relations. You can't derive income if you have tenants who fail to pay the rent, so tenant screening is important, including background checks. Additionally, good relations means tenant retention. High turnover means expenses and loss of income during periods between tenants. Additionally, tenancies sometimes have to be terminated and the owner should consider alternatives to the expense and uncertainties of eviction actions. Such an alternative is negotiating with the tenant his/her vacating the premises.

An important chapter covers the issues of employee relations (if you own a multifamily building you will most likely have employees), maintenance and security/safety. Security and safety issues cannot be minimized and the property owner should do the utmost to keep the property safe for both employees and tenants. Indeed, safety may be the most important single duty of a property manager. In the area of commercial property management, particularly since 9/11, tenants pay huge pass alongs in rent to assure tight security. So too, in residential property, security is a crucial issue. There should be a good system to be buzzed in with exterior doors that lock and cannot be opened by intruders. Lead paint, asbestos and other potential hazards must be addressed, not only as a matter of good management but as a matter of law. OSHA and other regulations protect employees and must be complied with.

This book is excellent for owners of property. If you are interested in the profession of property management, this book is helpful but far from complete. Since the book assumes that you are managing your own property, it does not deal with relations with owners. Drafting a management plan, regular reporting, budgeting and other aspects of manager/owner relations are not covered. So, this is a five star book with the caveat that the book is basically for owners, not professional managers.

A Must Have Reference On Propery Management

Robert Griswold's Property Management For Dummies is a wonderfully practical digest on property management covering every applicable subject both for those considering becoming a landlord and for long time landlords. Easy to read, and easy to jump right to the subject on which one needs the most help, Mr. Griswold's years of experience and wisdom are made accessable to the reader. Having been a property manager for over three years now, I was surprised by how much I learned from this book. For anyone considering property management or being a landlord, this book lets one know in advance all the factors to weigh before making that leap. I'll state it again -- you must have this book if you are in any way going to be involved in property management.

Helpful and Easy to Understand

This is a good text/workbook for learning Quick Books, which can be daunting. It is easy to follow with good explanations. This particular edition (and it's low price) did not include the disk, which can be a problem because you need it to track the files used in the book to do the lessons and understand the concepts. I'm in a class that uses this book, so have access to those files. So for me, it was great to get it at such a good price.

Great book concept

I am a big fan of Bryan Peterson and when I first saw this book available, I immediately purchased it for the iPad as a Kindle format. Sadly the first copy was corrupted and even though I was able to read the book, I was not able to use any of its multimedia files. I messaged Amazon and returned my book as they promised to get developers involved to fix the issue. I purposely waited to review the book once I would be able to fully experience the product Bryan meant for us to experience and it is a wonderful mix.

I love the "recipe style" approach to this book as when you are a novice, you mostly want to see how the masters have created their amazing photographs. Bryan has always been very generous at sharing his settings for any image on his books (one of the main reasons I like his books so much). But this time you get to see him on location sharing his short videos or hear an audio clip on why he is selecting a particular exposure combination. A great addition to the already visually rich material. The videos are short and to the point. So are the audio clips. I see one star reviews here only because of the multimedia glitch, now resolved, and I think it is unfair to an otherwise great book. I hope this review will persuade you to buy and enjoy the kindle version.

Probably the ***BEST*** Photography book I have ever read. Excellent information.

I have several of Bryan Peterson's books and this is by a long shot the best one. The reason is---while all of them are informative and have beautiful photos, this one tells you "HOW" to obtain the same kind of results. For example, it might say, "How to take a picture of seascape sunset " (or sunrise seascape) without over/under exposing the water or sky etc. Then he tells you how to use the meter in the camera, how to under or over expose intentionally, and what kinds of things can be fixed and not fixed in processing (aka software). So while the other books have great pics and tell you what they are and what kinds of equipment and settings were used to obtain them, this one give explicit and specific instructions on getting tricky or difficult shots to come out properly. Most of it involves understanding why and how---because when you know that, you don't need a "cookbook" to get the shot--you will know that if you don't do certain things, it will never work. You will know "HOW" to get certain shots. There is one lesson in there about lightning. So you could apply that and maybe the motion lessons for getting fireworks pictures. (for example) This book teaches you all of those kinds of things. It has sections on " motion", ie sports or fast cars/animals etc, depth of field, night photography, and many more. Its such a valuable book, I want to keep it in my camera bag. I am still such a film shooter, I have to remember that these pictures really cost me nothing (except a little temporary memory space and electricity for battery) --and I don't have only 36 exposures and 2 rolls left after, and if I don't get it right, I will be paying 12$ a roll to get blurs or nothing---so this book is good for me to not only teach me "HOW AND WHY", but to just do it. Take lots of pictures and practice practice practice. Thank you Bryan.

Really of value only to those unfamiliar with Peterson's previous books

This book, like his recently published (November 2012) "Understanding Composition Field Guide: How to see and Photograph Images with Impact", is basically a distillation of the subject based on his previous books ("Understanding Exposure", "Understanding Flash Photography", "Beyond Portraiture" and "Understanding Close Up Photography"). It is as if Mr. Peterson placed a sieve under all of these books and separated his advice on exposures from the remaining contents of the books. Even numerous photographs from "Exposure Solutions" can be found in these previous books. Hence for those who have read Mr. Peterson's previous books, unless they are looking for a compilation of all Mr. Peterson's previously provided advice on the topic or a one volume reference on the topic or a refresher on the subject, will not gain much from reading this new book. This book's real value is as a very good introduction to those unfamiliar with Mr. Peterson's previous works. Even then, it can only serve to wet their appetites albeit in a very interesting and stimulating way (as much of what it contains is very useful to beginning photographers, as opposed to anyone over and above that).

Mr. Peterson needs, in the future, to start publishing some original books in new directions. He has quite an aversion to Photoshop and digital manipulation techniques, as he himself has said explicitely in this book and others, but these seem like logical directions for him to go in. HDR photography and photoshop techniques would be topics that would be much welcomed by his reading public.

PS- this is a review of the hardcopy of the book, not the ebook hence this reviewer is unable to opine regarding the many problems mentioned by other reviewers regarding the ebook.

Excellent Review for the NCLEX-RN Exam

Highly recommend this book. I passed the NCLEX on my first try with 75 questions using this book as my main study tool. The test taking strategies explained in this book are on point. The practice tests are great and explain in detail the rationale for each answer, this book is the greatest preparation for passing the NCLEX; the first time. Another great study aid that really helped me with the NCLEX is Neutropix – Support Brain Function, Memory, Attention Span, Concentration & Clarity it is an amazing supplement that enhances your memory, focus and cognition, great for studying. Good luck with the NCLEX!

Passed NCLEX with Only ONE MONTH to Study... This Book Was My Secret Weapon & Life Saver!!

Saunders is the best Review for the NCLEX hands down. I can't personally say that I have tried other books, but I'll start off by saying that I passed the NCLEX. On my first try. With 1 month to study. After being out of nursing school for a year without reviewing.

For reasons that are too long to detail here, I was having difficulty scheduling my NCLEX due to various factors. Due to some miscommunication mostly on my part, I found that they had scheduled me to take the NCLEX and had given me a test date which was exactly one month away. You can imagine the overwhelming panic that came over me as I realized I had been out of nursing school since December 2012, and it was now mid-January 2014. Anyone reading this that is thinking of "taking a break" from nursing after graduating before preparing for the NCLEX... do not wait a year like I did. This will help prevent a lot of unnecessary stress.

The tools I used to review included this book (the Kindle version) which is the 6th edition, and NCSBN's learning extension review for the NCLEX online. Now the reason that I purchased the Kindle version of Saunders was because I had ordered the physical copy of the Saunders 5th Edition book and it was taking much longer than expected to arrive to me. At the time I was living in a small town in Alaska, and Barnes & Noble or was not readily available to me to purchase an NCLEX review book. As I became more and more anxious for the 5th Edition to come in, I could not NOT study and wanted a textbook in addition to the lessons online on NCSBN. I opted to purchase the Kindle edition of this book so that it could be delivered to me right away electronically and I could begin reviewing. I wanted the physical copy of the 5th edition for a reason though. Many reviews online from students expressed that the CD that comes with the 5th edition hard copy was very valuable and the practice questions and lessons on the CD helped other studying students tremendously. That CD was what I was after, to help me review & master the material that I would be going over in the book. I had an issue with the 5th edition not coming with that CD... and other reviewers online had the same concern.
But I will clear the air and say to anyone using the CD as a deal breaker between these two editions, the 6th edition may not come with the CD, but it comes with an online membership to a website containing the EXACT SAME MATERIAL found on the physical CD that comes with the 5th Edition! Once I received the 5th Edition in the mail I was able to compare the two, and really, the content on the Saunders review website with the 6th Edition is the same as the content on the CD with the 5th Edition. Even more, the content of the entire book of the 6th Edition is nearly identical to the content within the 5th Edition. The difference between the two texts are unnoticeable besides the fact that the content is reordered in the 6th Edition.

The content in these books were incredibly informative. For someone who had not reviewed for a long time, I was able to get back into the swing of things using these texts, and the "Pyramid Points" were absolutely KEY to remember. Every chapter was equipped with important, to the point information, highlighting facts & strategies that were imperative to remember. Each chapter then concluded with review questions that were similar to what I was actually tested on. I would also recommend the audio reviews on the CD or review website. Use the testing strategies that are outlined in these books. When I was stumped on a question because I just didn't know the answer from not knowing the content, I was able to use the strategies they taught to narrow down options to find the right answer.

When I took the exam I used up the whole time and I answered questions at my own pace. I tried to not feel rushed, and I didn't really utilize the breaks except for once. At the time I took it, I didn't feel completely confident that I passed, but at the same time I knew that I had been prepared well and a lot of the content I was tested on had been covered in my Saunders texts. A couple days later I found out that I passed!

What a gratifying feeling, and I do owe it to Saunders mostly, and in part to NCSBN's review, but if I could weight it I would give Saunders 89% of the credit and 11% of it to NCSBN. Bottom line, I would recommend these books, both the 5th and 6th edition, to any nursing student preparing for the NCLEX. If I could pass the NCLEX studying only for 1 month (technically, 3.25 weeks, as I was delayed in starting from waiting for the 5th edition to come in before I began studying with the 6th edition on Kindle), and I had been out of school for over a year, then you definitely can pass using these tools especially if you have a lot more time to study than I did.

CD is old school (breakable) and Multiple device support software is the new trend

The Free Access code is not for "Textbook" registration but its for a free Practice Questions from "Online Evolve Account" and was widely misunderstood because its actually a free "redeeming code" to a browser-base Practice Questions software from Evolve Online Catalog (similar to an App Store or Google Play store)

In order to redeem the free code, you need first to "create" your Evolve account with valid email address.

The registration process may be "annoying" to the students but it does not take a minute to sign up a new Evolve account.

Existing Evolve students (and teachers) users can simply sign in to redeem the free code.

If you do not want to purchase the 6th Edition Paperback, the online browser-base software actual price is $ 26

Shayna Rattler is a Personal Finance and Certified Business Coach, Author and Speaker. This was a good book for the entrepreneur who is new to business or who is contemplating starting a business. It provided tons of tips for those who want to know what it takes to build the courage to go for what is yours. It provides the reader with an inside look of how a young, up-and-coming business owner transformed from a layman to a professional. It is straight forward and an easy read. I think you will like it. I did!
