About the Author
John Wickins graduated in zoology at Southampton University in 1966. He then led research programmes on crustacean biology. Culture, recirculation systems and artificial habitats at the Conwy Laboratory of the Centre for Fisheries, Environment and Aquaculture Science (formerly Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food) until the laboratory was closed in December 1999. Before taking early retirement, he was an honorary lecturer at the Institute of Aquaculture, University of Stirling, and travelled widely on short-term advisory and assessment mission related to crustacean aquaculture.

Belfast-born Dan Lee became involved in commercial crustacean aquaculture in South America, initially as a biologist in Semacua, the first penaeid shrimp hatchery in Ecuador, and later as designer and technical manager of another Ecuadorian hatchery, Macrobio. Originally a graduate in zoology and marine biology at the University of Wales, Bangor, he returned to North Wales after five years and then worked on a series of shrimp hatchery and farm projects in Asia and Africa in the roles of research assistant, consultant and manger. He went on to gain MSc in project analysis, finance and investment at the University of York and remains active in commercial shrimp farming, currently from a base in the Caribbean.

A great read!

This is an excellent book for anyone in fitness sales and should be read by all gym owners, operators, irregardless of whether they have a sales role . There are so many wonderful point and ideas to help grow your business. I'm grateful Amanda wrote this book and I must also mention that it's written in a simple easy writing, no techno jargon, a great read.

Customer Acquisition made easy

One of the challenges facing my business/industry are rising marketing costs coupled with more and more competition. I purchased this book looking for any new insights,tips and tools that I am not utilising to generate low cost leads and ultimatley new customers.

I was anticipating another 'corporate consultant' academic approach. Wow was I wrong. What I found was a lucid, candid and simplified approach with so many real life examples, clues and tips. All I needed to do was select the ones relevant to me and begin.

I was so impressed with the style and content that I arranged for Amanda to speak at our Franchise Conference and present some of the ideas in her book. Needless to say all my franchisees now have a copy and most have already begun introducing some new customer acquisition strategies that have already added to sales.
Lead Generation and Alliances are just another string in the bow and thanks to Amanda we've now added this.

How my team can boost sales

This book is an incredible resource for health club operators, their managers, sales team and trainers. There's a couple of problems that this book helps: 1. The owners don't have a clear agenda of all the things that they can do to boost sales and 2. The team don't get "what to do, when to do it, and how to do it". This book solves that problem. It is a marketer's, sales manager's and sales-person's book of ideas. Each should buy their own.

Amanda is very rare in that she has skills in both marketing (lead generation) and sales (lead conversion). Too many books on marketing pay no attention to sales and vice versa. Also, unlike many pros, she is a constant student, reading a book a week. This book puts it all together.

Highly recommended!

A bigger cricket welcomes him to the world, then a locust, a cicada, and many other insects, but each time the tiny cricket rubs his wings together in vain: no sound emerges. In the end, however, he meets another quiet cricket, and manages to find his "voice." Children will love the repetitive text as they meet a steady parade of new creatures (including a "spittlebug, slurping in a sea of froth"); and of course they'll delight in the happy ending. This is one of a series of large (11.5 by 8.5 inches) format Eric Carle books with a mechanical twist: in this case, the quiet cricket bursts into (surprisingly authentic) electronic song as you turn the last page. (The battery is replaceable.) An amusement for the ears, but most of all--as ever, with Carle--a feast for the eyes. The colorful cut-paper illustrations are simply gorgeous, drawing you in even on the hundredth reading. (And there will be a hundredth reading, followed by many more.) A small cricket hatches "one warm day," and the other insects greet him. Though the little guy wants very much to respond, nothing happens when he rubs his wings together. Finally, as night falls, he spies another cricket and attempts to greet her. "And this time . . . he chirped the most beautiful sound that she had ever heard." As usual, Carle's art is lovely and his story is simple and satisfying. But this book has something The Very Hungry Caterpillar and The Very Busy Spider didn't have: an electronic chirping mechanism activated by the turning of the last page. Though the surprisingly realistic noise may get on parents' nerves, it will certainly intrigue and entertain its intended audience. Ages 3-6.

PreSchool-Grade 1-- Carle has created yet another celebration of nature. Ironically, it relies upon a high-tech gadget. When a baby cricket is born, a big cricket rubs his wings together to chirp "Welcome!" The little cricket attempts to reply, but there is no sound. On each double-page spread, the young creature encounters a variety of insects, but is unable to produce a sound to respond to their greetings. Finally, he comes upon another cricket, rubs his wings together, and chirps. Readers are then rewarded with a mechanically produced cricket's "chirp." Typical of Carle's style, the language is simple, with rhythm, repetition, and alliteration to delight young listeners. Painted collage illustrations are lavish and expressive. Unfortunately, while Carle takes full advantage of the opportunity presented by technology, he does so at the expense of the story. Although the attempt to provide a multisensory experience is an admirable one, he relies too heavily on gimmickry. The sound produced is not so much enhancement for the plot as it is essential to the resolution. Without it, the final outcome is flat and anticlimactic, and the text becomes tediously repetitive. Although the publisher promises that the "cricket's chirp will have a long life" if the book is closed after reading, it is difficult to gauge its life span in library circulation. Cricket sound feature burned out after just a few reads

This book is supposed to make a cricket noise on the last page. It worked for a few reads then stopped. Missed the return window so disappointed by that. My toddler doesn't seem to care though so not a deal breaker.

Dede Korkut: Oral Traditions in Turkic Epics

The Book Dede Korkut is a compilation of tales about the Turkic peoples of Central Asia, who later went on to conquer Asia Minor, and much of Europe. Although these stories are purportedly about an group of Muslim raiders, and defenders of the faith, it is clear that these references are grafted onto an earlier tradition. The stories themselves are juicy, and often funny, and give a good sense of life on the steppe. The translation is excellent, with good endnotes.

Heroic tales of steppe conquest and more. Love, hate, jealousy, campaigns, descriptions...The sort of tales one might imagine in dreams, but with a closer to reality focus than many epics. However, the music and internal rhythms of the Turkish original are lost in the translations.

Lewis does a wonderful job of explaining most of the spectacular nomadic quirks and cultural idioms that make this book so emblematic of the Oghuz world in the Middle Ages. A truly epic book, and one that I revisit often.

As someone who has devoted my life to the study of Turkic cultures, I absolutely recommend this book. Especially if you take the time to find the original texts online (free .pdfs in and antiquated Azeri dialect abound)--it's very fun to read along in both languages, either to check his translation or to practice your language skills.

About the Author

Dale H. Schunk is Dean of the School of Education and Professor of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He holds a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from Stanford University, a M.Ed. from Boston University, and a B.S. from the University of Illinois at Urbana. He has held faculty positions at Purdue University (where he served as Head of the Department of Educational Studies), the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (where he also was Chair of the Academic Affairs Institutional Review Board), and the University of Houston.

Dale has edited six books, is co-author of Motivation in Education: Theory, Research, and Applications (Prentice Hall, 2008) and has authored over 80 articles and book chapters. He has served as President of Division 15-Educational Psychology for the American Psychological Association and as Secretary of Division C-Learning and Instruction for the American Educational Research Association. He is presently a member of the editorial boards of three professional journals.

Dale's teaching and research interests include learning, motivation, and self-regulation. He has received the Early Career Contributions Award in Educational Psychology from the American Psychological Association, the Albert J. Harris Research Award from the International Reading Association, and the Outstanding Service Award from the Purdue University School of Education

Worst Textbook; Great Insomnia Treatment

This is the worst textbook I have ever used. The book is full of very relevant and important information. However, the organization of the material makes it very difficult to follow. The writing is dry and without passion. I understand it is a textbook, but if you are going to write about a subject make it interesting and worth reading.

The second edition has numerous revisions, additional sections such as "Phonons" and "Optoelectronic Materials and Devices", more solved problems, and a completely new chapter on "Optical Properties of Materials". The revisions have improved the rigor without sacrificing the original semiquantitative approach that the students liked. For example, the thermoelectric effect now includes the Mott-Jones index (x) which is normally treated at the graduate level but has been introduced here through a semiquantitative discussion to explain the true sign of the Seebeck coefficient in metals (one of the most difficult graduate topics in quantum mechanics of metals). The problems have also been updated and various difficult figures have been redrafted to enhance the pedagogy.

The second edition includes the Electronic Materials and Devices CD-ROM. The CD includes color overhead transparency diagrams that can be printed by instructors and students on any color printer; an illustrated dictionary of electronic materials and devices; numerous selected topics and solved problems.

The text with its Selected Topics can also serve as a first course in Materials Science aimed at electrical engineers and engineering physics students. It is suitable for both one- and two-semester courses. By focusing only on those topics relevant to materials that make up electronic and optoelectronic devices, the book offers students a deeper and more meaningful discussion of this material than is offered in general materials science textbooks. The coverage is up-to-date and the applications are of special relevance to students of electronics, materials science and engineering physics. IEEE Electrical Insulation Magazine July/August 2005, Vol. 21, No. 4 This textbook and CD-ROM are a great introduction to understanding the fundamentals of solid-state materials and devices. It combines the areas of solid-state theory, materials, and electromagnetics into a very straight-forward, understandable text aimed at an undergraduate or beginning graduate level student. The author clearly describes the theory of many of the key concepts for the foundation of solid-state materials and details many of their applications... The author has successfully aimed at developing a physical understanding of the concepts presented through the use of intuitive examples including drawings, illustrations, graphs, tables of physical data, and many practical applications... this is an excellent introduction to solid-state physics...

geared towards engineering students

Kasap offers a book well suited for an undergraduate engineer, who needs a comprehensive text of semiconductors and related electronic materials. The level of physics and maths required is moderate - one year or so of freshman courses.

The important materials are explained. Silicon, gallium arsenide and others. Kasap also provides many diagrams to illustrate key ideas. Plus, this is clearly meant as a student's textbook. Many examples of problems are worked through. To some students, this may be the clearest way to understand and apply ideas.

Kasap also found ways to greatly simplify standard mathematical treatments. Expands significantly the size of the audience who can appreciate the ease of understanding. Because a longstanding issue in materials science has been that texts were often written by physicists, for physicists or physics majors. Often leaving them too abstruse for engineering students, who also had a need for comprehending the same ideas.

Excellent intro book for electrical and computer engineers

This is one of the best books I have read on applied Materials Science. I found it particularly useful for electrical, electronic and computer engineering students.

The author gets to the point effortlessly, addressing only basic materials concepts necessary to conceptualize a main subject. Then, to complement and deepen the understanding of each subject convenient problems are sprinkled throughout the text.

Yet, the book is intense. The student needs to be focused and ready to absorb the wealth of themes presented in a structured manner. And this leads me to another interesting book feature:

I may sound like an old-fashioned professor, but I do dislike most Materials Science & Engineering textbooks that use color figures to enhance (they think) the learning. False: Colors only serve the publisher as an excuse to raise the book price through the roof. Students need to get exposed to regular scientific, professional documents where only sparsely color figures are used (very purposefully). Kasap's textbook doesn't need that expensive perk to be clear and thorough; all figures are clear-cut without unnecessary coloring.

For instructors, the book includes a CD that DOES help and with neatly arranged slide presentations. This is particularly useful in the instruction of electrical behavior of materials and solid state physics concepts used in the resolution of the accompanying problems.

All in all, this is one of the best books on applied Materials Science that I have encountered. The price is high even for an excellent textbook as this one. That's my only complaint.
