So-called "Talking Trees" are culturally-modified trees which were used by the First Nations of the United States and Canada, to indicate pathways, water sources, and safe or sacred places; like “exit signs” on woodland highways. These hardwood trees were culturally-modified as saplings to grow into unique shapes as landscape markers by Woodland Native American cultures. The author has found more than 20 of these "living artifacts" in his native New York State. Using dendrochronology and cartography methods coupled with historical data, the author has found that several of these trees are truly old enough to be ancient “living artifacts”. Interspersed with his anthro-biological research are engaging stories from the author’s outdoor adventures; and spirit teachings taught by the trees to their adopted guardian, He-finds-trees.

About the Author
Carl Andrew Koehler, (also known as He-finds-trees) is an arborist and historian, naturalist and author from upstate New York, who follows the Good Red Path of the Haudenosaunee. He travels throughout the east and mid-west with his hiking companion Elkhound-mix “Gyfa” exploring and studying natural, scenic, and historic areas. In a former, romantic era, he would have been known as a traveling naturalist. However, that leisurely gentleman's occupation no longer pays the bills in today's economy, so Carl obtained a conservation biology degree from SUNY Cortland. He has worked in forestry science for several prestigious research universities, for the National Science Foundation and the National Institute for Climate Change Research, and most recently as an arborist in private environmental consulting industry. Carl once told his dendrology classmates that in twenty years, they would read about him “saving trees.” It has not been twenty years, but, “Talking Trees & Spirit Trails” begins to fulfill that prediction he made to his class.

Interesting trees
By Maureen
The book has great pictures and interesting information on very special Indian trail trees that are like signposts from the past. I was expecting more of a field guide. The personal stories did not hold my interest, hence a 3.

Want to learn more about Trail Marker Trees? Read this!
By Kevin Armstrong
I've been finding Trail Marker Trees in the forests surrounding New York's Finger Lakes for years. The trees spoke to me loud enough that I took their pictures but I never knew exactly what they were. Last winter I learned a bit more about them. I went looking for more info and found this wonderful book. It featured some of the trees I had photographed. In fact, I sent Tree Finder photos of some of my trees and two weeks ago he and I hiked 2.6 miles into the woods and positively identified one of my trees that was a new trail marker to him. this book has set me on a wonderful new hobby path.

Never too old to learn something new.
By Lorna T. Czarnota
Naturalist, Carl Koehler takes us with him on this journey to find the Talking Trees & Spirit Trails of New York State.
As an avid traveler and student of history, it's easy to get to the point where you think you've seen it all. Now I wonder, how many times have I crossed paths with one of these amazing trees and because they were bent and scarred, I never gave them a second glance? Like the aged people in our communities, these trees tell a story; the story of the first people who blazed trails the rest of us can only pretend to have discovered. Thank you to the author for sharing his knowledge and his own spiritual journey. I hope now to meet a trail tree someday.
