An important book for the serious martial artist wishing to deepen their understanding of the history and origins of karate

An important book on the history and origins of Naha-te based karate, this book belongs on the bookshelf of anyone with a serious interest in the history and development of karate not just Naha-te or Goju-ryu. Meticulously researched and masterfully translated, it is a wonderful collection of fascinating and important historical documents, articles and photos. Of particular interest to me were the insights into the kata and principles of Goju-ryu and Naha-te, and the very informative details and stories about Kanryo Higaonna which really fleshed him out for me. One other aspect of the book that made it stand out for me was the author's ability to allow the original writers of these historical documents speak for themselves. Rather than obscure the message with the translator's own opinions or biases, Joe Swift has translated yet preserved the voice, the culture and "feel" of the times; I could almost imagine what it must have been like back in the day! A truly wonderful and important book, highly recommended.

clearly written with good coverage, but bland and unsatisfying

This book generally does what it sets out to do, and does it fairly well. If you have no or almost no background in this area it will certainly be thought-provoking. However, I think there is room for improvement. The writing style is very clear but very bland, and the author is unnecessarily equivocal, apparently in the hope of not alienating one reader or another. (Interestingly this is not the case when he discusses scientism, where he managed to alienate me by not grasping one of the core arguments against scientism.) The earlier chapters tend to leave one with the feeling that after a lot of thought, little or no ground has been gained, which I don't think is the right impression and likely leaves many readers questioning the value of philosophy of science overall. I also got the impression that the author isn't comfortable with the current state of knowledge in basic physics, which I think is very important for this area of thought. I found the later chapters on specific problems to be much more engaging, but I thought some of the problems were peripheral to what I see as the core questions. You can't go wrong reading this book, especially given its length, but you won't come away satisfied.

Concise not condescending.

At just 134 small (4.5 x 6.5") pages this book is a bargain in both time and cost. The book starts with a short history of modern science (Aristotle, Copernicus, and onward). Using some of the work of Karl Popper and falsifiability, Okasha proceeds to define science, but also points out the failures of Popper's demarcation. There is a short summary to deduction and induction, but counters induction with Hume's problem. The major problems of explanation in science including covering law, symmetry, irrelevancy, and causation, are all discussed. The chapter on realism and anti-realism, perhaps becomes more esoteric, but is an important topic. Thomas Kuhn, and "The structure of scientific revolutions" is an important topic, but perhaps the pages on Kuhn's legacy is not thorough, (but the reader is left with references to pursue!). The paragraphs on biology and "science and religion" in light of "Intelligent design" debates, are of most interest, but coverage is cursory, and other sources are available (I recommend Edward Larson's Summer for the Gods on the Scopes Trail). Photographs and diagrams throughout the book, give some historical examples. Well worth the time!

A fine Vietnam war novel - easy to read, hard to put down

This is a very fine novel - one of the best about Vietnam. It has a good, authentic story line, interesting and well developed characters and solid writing. It's easy to read and hard to put down. I think anyone interested in the Vietnam war experience would find it well worth reading.

As you travel with these soldiers to Viet Nam and into battle, you feel all the emotions that made this war so controversial. Groom's writing is so vivid that it brings the war right to your doorstep where it can't be ignored or misunderstood. A powerful must-read. Once you start Better Times than These, you won't be able to put it down. And after you've read it, you won't be able to get it out of your mind.

This book has never gotten the respect due it and that is a shame. This is the best early war novel on the market. Things are new and we are learning the way things are going to be. This anti-war movement has not really started and fighting is the news. This is Groom's first book and I have a first edition that I would not part with.

Read this one first, "Sand in the Wind" next and the "13th Valley" last. These books are the war as it was lived and fought. They are some of the best war fiction ever written.

Fair to Middling

This is a generally well written book, easy to read (though I think the author overuses the word "ensure(d)" by a considerable margin). On the other hand, there is not a single map in the book. This may be little or no problem for a WWII afficianado, who likely has the requisite maps in his or her head, but could cause major annoyances for others, who will need a good atlas at the ready. Though primarily a military history as claimed, this is not the type of military history that focuses on the individual soldier. In fact, few military formations below the level of army group (= Russian front) are named or their movements discussed. This is definitely broad sweep military history. But some relatively obscure actions are given more space than one might expect: for example the Madagascar campaign is given half a page. On the other hand, the much longer South Pacific campaigns are relegated to a couple of pages. Author's choice, I suppose. There is some discussion of the home fronts, particularly the submarine war against England, and the bombing campaign against Germany. Munich and the lead-up to the war are covered in fair detail. All in all, an interesting read, though not the best book for the novice.

About the Author

Teodiano Freire Bastos-Filho received his degree in electrical engineering from the Universidade Federal do Esp�rito Santo, Vit�ria, Brazil, in 1987, and his Ph.D. in physical sciences from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Madrid, Spain, in 1994. He is with the Department of Electrical Engineering, Universidade Federal do Esp�rito Santo, Vit�ria, Brazil, and the Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq). His research interests include signal processing, rehabilitation robotics, and assistive technologies.

Dinesh K Kumar received his PhD from IIT Madras, and his PhD in biomedical engineering from IIT Delhi and AIIMS, Delhi. He is professor and leader of biomedical engineering at RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia. He has published over 330 refereed papers in the field, and his interests include muscle control, affordable diagnostics, and human computer interface. He is an editor of multiple journals, chairs a range of conferences related to biomedical engineering, and in his spare time enjoys walking in nature.

Sridhar Poosapadi Arjunan received his B.Engg degree in electronics and communication from University of Madras, India in 2000; M.Engg degree in communication systems from Madurai Kamaraj University, India in 2002; and his PhD in biomedical signal processing from RMIT University, Australia in 2009. He is currently a post-doctoral research fellow with Biosignals Lab at RMIT University. He is a recipient of RMIT SECE Research Scholarship (2006-08), CASS Australian Early Career Researcher grant (2010), and Australia-India ECR fellowship (2013). His major research interests include biomedical signal processing, rehabilitation study, fractal theory, and human computer interface applications.

Olivier Lecarme is a professor emeritus in computer science at the University of Nice, France. He has a doctorate in computer science. I have reviewed a number of books about GIMP and other graphics software but none of them have been as complete and all inclusive as this one. This book is not a reference to GIMP and not a book on how to use GIMP to perform specific tasks - it is both. No matter whether you are an experienced GIMP user who needs a reference to the more obscure commands or a complete newcomer to GIMP who hasn't even installed it yet, this book is what you are looking for.

The tutorials in the book cover things such as getting started with GIMP (including how to install and configure it), retouching photos, producing drawings, creating logos, and designing web sites. The reference section has one chapter per menu covering all of the options provided by that menu no matter how likely or unlikely it is to be useful to you. The only menu options the book omits are those where their function is so obvious that there is no need to cover them at all. The book even covers how to customise the program so that it works the way that you want it to.

The appendices provide further useful information about GIMP that doesn't fit into any of the chapters within the book. One appendix covers how to install GIMP on various operating systems - useful for those just starting out. Another appendix covers a range of useful online resources about GIMP so that in the rare instance that the book doesn't answer your question you can search for more information online.

No longer is it necessary to purchase multiple books about GIMP in order to have a 'how to' book and a reference, All you need is this one book which really is the complete guide to nearly everything - at least with respect to GIMP.

Free software, one book = Amazing results Yeah, that can't lose

"The Book of GIMP" (GIMP stands for "GNU Image Manipulation Program", and GNU, I'll leave up to you. There is history here worth exploring...) is a dazzling book full of pictures, illustrations and deeply technical, but fully comprehendible and comprehensive information on GIMP. And, the plethora of pictures only make sense, given what GIMP does.

GIMP is one of the most successful (and this is super-important) free software applications - ever. Free, as in "You don't have to pay for it... No strings attached." Additionally, you don't have to commit to one given platform or operating system to use GIMP. GIMP is developed and maintained for GNU/Linux, Microsoft Windows, Apple's Macintosh OS X, Sun's OpenSolaris and FreeBSD. Supported image formats are comparable to the most popular image and graphic formats found in large-scale commercial products, and is extensible through a large library of plug-ins. The Plug-ins allow you to customize and enhance GIMP for what you need.

The feature set in GIMP is huge, and anytime you add lots and lots of features to an application that deals with the complexity of image (let's think photos, and you're a professional photographer) manipulation, there is bound to be LOTS of information that is good to know, or good to have a complete reference. Well, that's this book. GIMP touts itself as the alternative to other commercial products in the same space that cost literally $1000+. To get the full value out of GIMP, one would first think, "Well, it's FREE. My expectations can't be that high!" Think again. YOU might not be paying anything, but there are people that have dedicated themselves and sweat equity to GIMP. In those terms, this application is invaluable. It's full of one thing that many commercial applications isn't: Pride. And it shows.

Now, back to the book. GIMP is free, but "The Book of GIMP" isn't and you should know why you would want to pay for a book for software that's free. Fair question. The book deals with the complexity of GIMP in a way that is presented in a very concise and very prescriptive way. The book is broken up into sections and chapters that deal with specific challenges in the work of massaging images - retouching photos, editing graphics, and so on - that make up the day to day work of the amateur to professional graphic artist or photographer. This book presents hundreds of pictures and images that guide you through how to use the tools in GIMP to achieve the very real professional results that GIMP is capable of. Over-exposed photo? Great - there is guidance for that. Red eye got you down? No worries. GIMP can solve that. Need to enhance and retouch a photo? This book can show you how. Need to modify an image because the boss changed his mind after the product was signed off? Yep, can do that - no problem.

There are over 600 pages in the book, full of glossy photos, clean images and very impressive results from using GIMP to achieve a certain look. There are also lots of images of the actual GIMP interface so that you will know what you are looking for, what you have to do to tweak this color, change that saturation, and so on. The completeness in the book's treatment of GIMP is a true testament to how important this application really is.

In this reviewer's humble opinion (My family is rife with artists and graphics people...), GIMP is as full-featured as you will likely ever need for your image manipulation tasks. So, this book just saved you some four figures in commercial software. Buy the book - complete the package. I can literally assure you. This is a purchase that you won't have much remorse over. And, if you really, really feel bad that you saved $950+, the good people with the GIMP Project take donations to fund their continued efforts to provide a FREE product of amazing quality to the masses.

Detailed Tutorials - In Depth Explanations - The Book of GIMP

The Book of Gimp is an excellent resource for learning how to use the GNU Image Manipulation Program. GIMP is a great photo editor that handles image composition and image authoring with ease. The Book of GIMP covers version 2.8. GIMP is a free open source software maintained by gimp.org

The Book of GIMP is an extensive volume at well over 600 pages. Part One is a series of tutorials that gets the reader involved with using GIMP for real world projects. Subjects covered include photo retouching, drawing and illustration, animation, using GIMP for website design, and others. Part Two is a reference of GIMP tools and features. It goes into greater depth on the individual tools contained within GIMP. Section Two contains a chapter on Obtaining and Printing Images. Since GIMP is a great free photo editing software, digital cameras are mentioned as are scanners and printers.

Part Three contains Appendices. There is a discussion of Vision and Image Representation. Color theory is another included topic. Also found in Part Three are GIMP related resources and installation tips for the more popular Linux distributions, Mac OS X, and Windows.

A tutorial explains how to copy and paste a photo directly to the image window. The text includes all the original images used to start each project. Copying the originals allowed me to follow along with each project. Intermediate steps and final results could be compared with the finished project photos in the book. This made the tutorials much more valuable than just reading along with the text. Each chapter has exercises at the end for those looking to test their newly learned skills.

I found this book to be very helpful. I use GIMP for all my photo editing and web site graphics. Since the book contains tutorials, you will find click commands as well as numerous keyboard shortcuts. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about using GIMP.
