Journalist Weller (Raging Heart: The Intimate Story of the Tragic Marriage of O.J. Simpson and Nicole Brown Simpson) reconstructs the social striving and psychological excesses that plagued her family and relatives, owners of the posh Hollywood nightspot Ciro's. In the early 20th century, her father (Daniel Weller), mother (Helen Hover) and uncle (Herman Hover) moved to California. They were New York Jews moving west seeking fame and self-reinvention, she explains. They found it: Daniel became a respected neurosurgeon, Helen a celebrity journalist and Herman the proprietor of Ciro's. Much high life followed, until 1958, when Herman tried to kill his brother-in law, who was involved with Herman's wife. Divorce, professional decline, the closing of Ciro's, Sheila's estrangement from her father and more followed before that generation of her family died. While Weller claims to have written this as a love letter to her family, she doesn't succeed in making readers feel their story is exceptional or representative enough to merit telling. A few images, like the Hover family heading west, are iconic. It's also entertaining to learn the intricacies of Ciro's design and tidbits about stars like Sammy Davis Jr. But when Weller concludes that sometimes "empathy and epiphany is not in the cards," readers may be left wondering why Weller bothered to tell the story. Despite the meticulous research and American themes, Weller's memoir doesn't enliven her family or enlighten her readers.

A very good read

I just finished reading Dancing at Ciros by Sheila Weller. The author's uncle ran a nightclub in L.A. that was a hangout for all the top movie stars of that day. Lana Turner, Marilyn Monroe, Clark Gable and Judy Garland all spent their evenings in Ciros night club.

Weller's mother wrote for movie magazines of the day and her father was a surgeon. It seemed like an ideal life, but there were cracks in the foundation and Weller's world fell apart when her dad started dating his sister-in-law. Her dad left her mother and indeed the whole family. Weller's rich life style evaporated as she faced the pain of a broken family.

While I am not the child of divorce, I did grow up in the 1950's so this was in many ways a story about the world where I grew up. Sometimes Weller's memories brought back good and bad memories of my own.

A wonderful surprise!

When I ordered this book I thought I was buying an expos� about life at Ciro's in it's heyday, with emphasis on celebrities. Light summer reading, you know.. But this book is not about that and I could not have been more surprised or pleased. Sheila Weller's experiences as an adolescent trying to fit in with the Popular Girls rings so true that I felt like I was in Junior High again, only with her. The painful stories she relates about her family, especially about her father, made me think she must be a wonderfully strong woman to be able to write with such honesty. And with a wry sense of humor threaded throughout, even in the painful parts of her story. I highly recommend this book and look forward to more from this author.

Fascinating

Sheila Weller has told the story of her family lovingly and without self-pity. Although she describes many supremely painful moments - her rejection by her father is foremost - I never had the feeling she was wallowing in the past. She did her homework and the history of her parents and grandparents was more interesting than descriptions of the celebrities who visited Ciro's. We hear enough about celebrities these days. Weller maintains good tension throughout the book. Once I began reading I didn't want to put it down.

This is how you _really_ do it

In science and engineering, textbooks gradually decay in quality. The first text is written by the guy who invented the idea, and is rigorous but very lucid (H. W. Bode's "Network Analysis and Feedback Amplifier Design" is a good example). Then you get people who write books about things they aren't really expert in, and the treatments become derivative and are progressively dumbed down with time. The logic becomes fuzzy and many errors and half-truths creep in.
Jiri Dostal may not have invented the op amp, but he writes as though he had--this book is readable, analytically rigorous, and full of clear explanations. Nothing is left unconsidered, and wow, what a help that is. I recommend this book very highly if you need to use op amps for anything at all demanding.

Good meaty book but insanely expensive

This is still one of the best op-amp books out there. It's certainly not for the casual user, but despite what some have said, I think it's accessible to anyone who's had at least 1 semester of linear circuits at a EE level (and a lab to go with it.) There's a good mix of intuition and rigor. The author employs all the tricks of the trade deftly switching between them depending on the application and explaining why. The explanations are very clear, unusual for an english translation of any technical book. Find me a textbook with the nads to say "The only practical way of mathematically analyzing an operational circuit is analysis by partial tests and idealizations of unimportant things." Most authors would burst into flames if they tried to write that.
The book has 2 major downsides though that render it useful only as a reference. First, there are no homework problems. So the book doesn't make a usable textbook except for instructors energetic enough to write their own problem sets. Second, it's insanely expensive. $200 is just plain ridiculous. The price tag puts it way out of reach of any student and any but the most serious designers. Get it from your local college library if you can.

The go to book, when you have a problem

Dostal's book is not for the newbie, or for the timid. It goes way beyond the typical simplistic approaches used in academia, yet is practical enough to take a top position on a practicing analog engineers bookshelf.

When you have unexplainable issues, and the factory apps guys start to act clueless, this book is a treasure trove of ideas. A must have for any analog guru, or for those who wish to tread where few would ever want to go.

LAB Man — Photoshop Super Hero

I am being a bit cheeky writing this review, and giving it five stars, because I have not actually read the book — but I do know Norman. Like myself, Norman is an Adobe Community Professional, and spends time helping people with their Photoshop questions on the Adobe Photoshop forum. That forum has some of the most knowledgeable Photoshop experts on the planet, but Norman stands out, both for the level of his knowledge, and his ability to put across his information in a clear and concise manner. Having just discovered this old, out of print book, I am now going to do my best to get a copy. Incidentally, Norman loves talking about LAB colour mode, to the point that I had to reinvent him as LAB Man. :-)

Struggling to catch up

The vertebrate limb is now recognized as being patterned by a Turing-type reaction-diffusion mechanism. Although this has major implications for the development of this structure as well as its origin and evolution, it is barely mentioned in the long chapter on this system. This is despite the limb's being the main research specialty of the authors. It makes you wonder about the rest.

The book was in the condition in was described in. There was a little bit more highlighting then I was expecting, but it's not a big deal. The price was great! My school bookstore wanted over twice what I paid for it here.

Good ideas for your students

I love the thought of this book -- an art book for teachers who may not know much about art, but are planning on teaching art to their students. It's a great idea, and the book covers a great deal of information in a thin volume, from the principles of art, to the schools of artists and their works, to methods used to create art, to visiting the museum.
The book also contains suggested projects for your elementary school art students, as well as jumping-off points for discussion and activity. I only wish the book had even more ideas, but perhaps that is another book!
If you are a teacher who wants to teach art, but doesn't know much about it, and doesn't know where to begin, I suggest beginning with this book. It's a crash course not only in art, but in teaching art to elementary students and instilling a love of art within your students.
