Myth, magic, and miracles, freaks, saints, and devils--such is the world of wonders unleashed by a simple snowball thrown in the village of Deptford in 1908.

Fifth Business is Davies's masterwork, the book that cemented his reputation as one of the great storytellers of our time. When the book appeared in 1970, he had already published the three books of his Salterton Trilogy, which won him recognition in his native Canada as an incisive cultural critic and an endlessly entertaining novelist. He had struck a note near Mark Twain in his portrayal of small-town culture, satirizing the residents' pious absurdities without seeming cruel, dramatizing their dreams and good intentions without becoming sentimental.

With Fifth Business, he plumbed new artistic and spiritual depths. The opening scene, which he envisioned taking place at his boyhood home in Thamesville, Ontario, haunted Davies from the first time it appeared to him in about 1960 until he began to draft the novel ten years later: "It was simply a scene that kept occurring in my mind, which was of two boys on a village street on a winter night--I knew from the look of the atmosphere that it must be just around Christmas-time--and one boy threw a snowball at the other boy. Well, that was all there was to it, but it came so often and was so insistent that I had to ask myself, Why is that boy doing that and what is behind this and what is going on?"

Many elements of the novel that emerged from this vision were drawn from Davies's early childhood. Like Dunstable Ramsay's father, Davies's father was the one-man publisher of a village newspaper, and Davies grew up in the newspaper business. "In a newspaper family," he said, "you learn not only all the news that's fit to print, but all the news that is not fit to print, and you acquire an insight into human nature and the essence of a community which is very hard to acquire . . . in any other way."

Like his protagonist in Fifth Business, Davies was raised in the Presbyterian Church. Although he eventually rejected its particular doctrines, he retained a strongly religious temperament. His spiritual explorations ultimately found resonance in the works of Carl Gustav Jung. "Orthodox Christianity has always had for me the difficulty that it really won't come . . . to grips with the problem of evil," Davies said. "What looks good can be pushed to the point that it becomes evil, and . . . evil very frequently bears what can only be regarded as good fruit." Jung had portrayed God as a psychological reality that embraced polarities of good and evil, light and shadow; the devil is an inextricable part of him. One had to confront this shadow face-to-face in order to live a moral life. "The devil is the unexamined side of life," Davies said, "and the great evils spring from acting without knowledge of your subconscious intentions."

Davies was also drawn to Jung's deities because they had womanly as well as manly faces, faces that are reflected in his portrayal of Mary Dempster. Here were the feminine elements he found woefully lacking in Christianity, with its focus on God the Father and the Son. In Jung's landscape of the psyche, Davies found a theoretical grounding for the diverse representations of human quest and conflict he had come to appreciate. Beyond the Judeo-Christian literary tradition was a rich world of folk tales, myths, ghost stories, and legends that were sacred in their own way, striking deep spiritual chords in our unconscious. From this same sensibility sprang Davies's lifelong interest in saints, which he, like Ramsay, appreciated not as narrowly defined religious figures, but as archetypes of universal characters and tales.

The remarkable events that unfold in this "enchanted landscape" owe much to Davies's lifelong love of the theater. From boyhood he was drawn to the traveling circus, the magic show, and the movie palace. Over the course of his career he worked for the Old Vic Repertory Company in London, wrote a dozen plays, and was one of the founders of the Stratford Shakespeare Festival. His passion for theater was so intense that his novels have sometimes been criticized for their theatricality: How does Ramsay just happen to meet Paul Dempster repeatedly in his travels, and how does Surgeoner "randomly" pick Ramsay from the crowd at Colborne College? But such theatrical events--call them coincidence or fate--lie at the heart of Davies's worldview. "I'm not in any way a devotee of realism," said Davies, "and the theatre is never realistic, even when it's pretending to be intensely so." The meaningful stories in our lives are dramatic rather than naturalistic, remarkable rather than random.

This appreciation of the theater of the inner life could come only with age. Davies was in his fifties when he explored these demons of youth in Fifth Business, and the result is a captivating narrative stance. While working on the manuscript, he wrote, "It is autobiographical, but not as young men would do it; it will be rather as Dickens wrote David Copperfield--a fictional reworking of some things experienced and much rearranged--a spiritual autobiography in fact, and not a sweating account of the first time I backed a girl into a corner." Davies's protagonist frequently distances himself from immediate events, adding the tincture of age and humor to vividly recalled experience.

The unforgettable tone that arises from this perspective has been characterized as a hybrid of satire and romance. Davies somehow manages to marry these seemingly incompatible viewpoints, delighting in his own former naivet� and the follies of his youth while maintaining a fundamental earnestness about Ramsay's aspirations. It is the voice of a man at mid-life who has taken unusual paths, who is fascinated by the possibilities that lie before him, and who has lost neither his youthful seriousness nor his sense of humor.

Despite his established reputation in Canada, Davies was little known to U.S. readers and reviewers when Fifth Business was published in 1970. The American reception was exuberant, propelling the novel to bestseller lists in both the U.S. and Canada. Christopher Lehmann-Haupt described it in the New York Times as "a marvelously enigmatic novel . . . elegantly written and driven by irresistible narrative. One thinks of The Magic Mountain and The French Lieutenant's Woman, although Mr. Davies hardly needs Thomas Mann and John Fowles to prop him up."

Other reviewers praised the remarkable range of erudition he conveys in his works. Saints and card tricks, brandy and psychology, linguistics and bearded ladies are all objects of his insatiable curiosity. Davies is modest about the range of his learning, pointing out that some academics thought Shakespeare must have been a sailor because of the convincing seaman's slang in The Tempest: "It's all hooey. Shakespeare had a few telling details which he injected into his plays that made them seem realistic, and I have the same in my novels." A veteran once asked Davies where he had served in France during the Great War, for only a soldier could have captured the mud and panic of the trenches so vividly. Davies had to reply that he was in the cradle at the time. Similarly, his fictional prescription for bringing an ailing cello back to its true voice with a poultice of horse manure was pure fancy. Even the definition of "Fifth Business" that opens the book—cited from a dull, untranslated account of Danish theater and first taken as yet another example of Davies's eccentric knowledge—was revealed to be entirely fictional when the Norwegian edition of the book was published (although the notion it conveys of "Fifth Business" in the theater is quite accurate).

The key is to be convincing, true to the spirit rather than to mere facts. As Davies described the art of writing:

If you're a writer . . . you're a descendent of those medieval storytellers who used to go into the square of a town and spread a little mat on the ground and sit on it and beat on a bowl and say, 'If you give me a copper coin I will tell you a golden tale.' If the storyteller had what it took, he . . . told them a golden tale until it got to the most exciting point and then he passed the bowl again.

His storytelling prowess earned him frequent comparisons to Charles Dickens--a comparison of which he was not overly fond. The authors he admired included Victor Hugo, Honore de Balzac, Anthony Trollope, Evelyn Waugh, and Daniel Defoe, all very different writers, but all possessing what he called shamanstvo--the enchanter quality, from the word shaman. Like Dickens, Davies had a flair for the dramatic and could sketch a secondary character unforgettably in just a few lines (the portraits of Rev. Leadbeater, Orph Wettenhall, and Boy's stepdaughter Lorene in Fifth Business, for example). But he was more daring in his experiments with form than he is often given credit for, and his novelistic objectives are decidedly modern rather than Victorian.

As Michiko Kakutani wrote in the New York Times, Davies "has created a rich oeuvre of densely plotted, highly symbolic novels that not only function as superbly funny entertainments but also give the reader, in his character's words, a deeper kind of pleasure— delight, awe, religious intimations, a fine sense of the past, and of the boundless depth and variety of life."

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

1. When Percy Boyd Staunton denies his share of responsibility for the snowball that hit Mrs. Dempster and caused her premature labor, Dunstable Ramsay feels the full weight of guilt on his shoulders. Even years later, when he seeks out Mrs. Dempster again, he is highly sensitive to the magistrate's charge: "Guilt . . . somebody bears it to this day!" Why does he feel this guilt so keenly? To what extent is he responsible for Paul's fate? For Staunton's?

2. Many of the characters in Fifth Business change their names. Dunstable Ramsay becomes Dunstan, Percy Boyd Staunton becomes Boy Staunton, Paul Dempster becomes Faustus Legrand and later Magnus Eisengrim. What happens when each of them is "born again"? Which aspects of their characters endure, and which are transformed?

3. Young Dunstable's flight from his mother colors the rest of his life. When he contemplates his relationship with Diana, his first lover, he shuns the motherly quality of her affection: "I had no intention of being anyone's dear laddie, ever again." How and why do the other men in the novel (Boy Staunton, Paul Dempster) flee their mothers? What are they seeking in a woman? How are the ideal and the reality of motherhood and womanhood conveyed in Ramsay's reflections on the virgin Mary?

4. "People marry most happily with their own kind," Davies once wrote. "The trouble lies in the fact that people usually marry at an age where they do not really know what their own kind is." What would have happened if Dunstan had married Leola? What kind of marriage would have better suited Boy?

5. "If you think her a saint, she is a saint to you," says Padre Blazon of Ramsay's fascination with Mary Dempster. What place does she come to occupy in his psychological landscape? Why is he so possessive of her, refusing to ask for Boy's assistance for her care?

6. King Edward VIII of England was forced to abdicate in 1936 after less than a year in office because he wanted to marry Wallis Simpson, a twice-divorced American who was felt to be an unacceptable Queen. Why was this such a bitter blow to Boy? What did Edward represent to him? 7. If Ramsay is truly "Fifth Business," as Liesl describes, who are the hero and heroine, sorceress, and villain of the story? Do they correspond to the "usual cabal" described at the book's conclusion? Who are "the Basso and the Brazen Head" Liesl refers to in her letter? Who was the woman Boy knew and the woman he didn't know?

8. Ganymede was a beautiful Trojan prince who was seized and carried to Olympus by Zeus's eagle to become the cup-bearer of the gods. Ramsay suggests that Boy's corporate proteges were expected to fill that role. What did he want from them, and why did they always disappoint him?

9. "I seem to have emerged as a moralist; my novels are a moralist's novels," Davies said of his work. Certainly they are not moralistic in a conventional religious sense. In what sense are they moralistic? Ramsay tells Boy, "You created a God in your own image, and when you found out he was no good you abolished him. It's a quite common form of psychological suicide." What kind of God has Ramsay set up for himself? What light is shed on his moral character by his discussions of the devil? His talk with Surgeoner about fictional testimonials?

The best book I had never heard of

Fifth Business, the first installment of the Robertson Davies' Deptford Trilogy, is without doubt the best novel that I had never heard of. Davies prose and narrative voice rival Evelyn Waugh's Brideshead Revisited in elegance, humor, and style. And his characters and plot development, so rich, absorbing, and at once triumphant and tragic, put this fine novel in the same class as Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby.
The term 'Fifth Business', as Davies describes, refers to the role in an opera, usually played by a man, which has no opposite of the other sex. While only a supporting character, he is essential to the plot, for he often knows the secret of the hero's birth, or comes to the assistance of the heroine when all seems lost, or may even be the cause of someone's death. In this novel, Dunstan Ramsay plays this role, and he is in maginificent form. Though he narrates the novel, and is intimately entwined in the lives of all its characters, he somehow manages to remain slightly in the background as a passive observer of others. It is through his eyes that we witness the rise of Boy Staunton, his childhood friend from the small Canadian town of Deptford. While Dunny goes off to the war where he is seriously wounded, and later becomes a boarding school master and expert on the history of saints, Boy makes his fortune in the sugar business and eventually pursues a career in politics. Dunny, whose soft-spoken charm, honesty, and self-reflection become clear through his narration, serves as an admirable foil to Boy, whose drive and ambition are unrestrained by a sense of morality, duty, or altruism.
But the novel is far more complex than a simple study of two contrasting characters. Davies' cast is rich and diverse, and their lives intertwine fluidly, though often in surprising ways. There is Mrs. Dempster, who in the opening pages is struck by a snowball thrown by Boy and intended for Dunny, and is rendered "simple" after the subsequent premature birth of her son Paul. Paul runs away from home at a young age, but reappears later in the novel in a key role. And Liesl, the magician's manager, a strong-willed and sexually aggressive woman, hardened by life but wise in the ways of the world, proves to be an admirable rival for Dunny as astute observer of others.
Narrated in the form of a letter to Dunny's headmaster, the novel maintains a strong sense of plain honesty throughout. It is a remarkable novel, and a shock that Davies has remained relatively obscure in this country.

An enchanting saga told in great story telling tradition

I had never heard of Robertson Davies until I discovered "Fifth Business", the first instalment of the "Deptford Trilogy", from a recommended book list and what a great reading experience it turned out to be. Davies writes in a style highly reminiscent of the great late 19th and early 20th century writers. Strongly narrative, the novel is richly multilayered in its exploration of ideas and themes. At its most basic level, it is the story of the sensitive but oddly passive Dunstan Ramsey, the novel's protaganist, whose life is contrasted with his pragmatic and successful friend, Boy Staunton and his women (including Leola, his wife who turns out not to be made of the same stuff as Boy). Whilst Dunstan seems content to live life as a school master, observing rather than participating, Boy makes waves and becomes a hugely successful figure in business and politics. But more fascinating is the early traces of "magical realism" used by Davies in the Mary Dempster (the "fool-saint") episode, which manifests the nature of Dunstan's conscience (contrasting with the lack thereof in Boy) as well as his belief in the power of magic and imagination. In the development of this secondary plot line, Davies employs a technique that hints at "magical realism" but wields his craft with such confidence and aplomb that the effect can only be described as dazzling. Dunstan's feeling of responsibility towards Mary and her son Paul is brought to a beautiful conclusion when he learns much later after Paul runs away from home and assumes the identity of a magician that it was he (Dunstan) who had taught him (Paul) the rudiments of magic through the card game. The shock ending for Boy smacks of poetic justice, leaving the question metaphysically open ended. Boy may be the protaganist on the world's stage and Dunstan only "fifth business", but who's ultimately the more valuable human being ? Davies has written a brilliant and enchanting novel. For sure I'll be checking out the next two instalments of his trilogy.

Unbelievable quality for the price!

SPECIAL NOTE: For U.S. customers purchasing the illustrated edition of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, you will notice the text has NOT been converted to the "Americanized" version of the original U.S. releases (with the exception of changing all "Philosopher's Stone" mentions to "Sorcerer's Stone"). So far, I have noticed the following: (EU/US) dialling / dialing; Shan't! / Won't!; sherbet lemon / lemon drop; motorbike / motorcycle; and dustbin / trashcan. For many purists of the series who never liked the idea of modifying the original text for an American audience, this is a good thing. Good or bad is naturally for each reader to decide--just know, if you plan to read the books while listening to Jim Dale's audiobooks, you'll notice a few superficial differences.

The quality of this new illustrated edition is phenomenal. I've been excited about the release of this book since it was announced, but I never expected the book as a whole to be so well crafted.

A couple of things to note:
1. Underneath the book jacket, the novel is bound in a sturdy red hardback with gold lettering on the spine.
2. The paper is thick with an eggshell glossy finish.
3. All chapter intros are illustrated.
4. Some images take up full pages or multiple pages. Most illustrations share the page with text.
5. Every inch of the book is illustrated or decorated in some fashion. There are NO white pages in the book. Even the pages without large illustrations have the paper printed and marked with ink blots or paper "stains".

I would highly recommend this for anyone looking to read the series (again, or for the first time), especially if you plan to read this with someone younger. If this book is a demonstration of what is to come with the illustrated editions for the rest of the series, we're all in for six more impeccable treats.

Beautiful Book but mine's already falling apart ;-(

The book itself and illustrations are absolutely, incredibly extraordinary. In that way, this is 100% a 10-STAR book and is absolutely to die for for Harry Potter fans. I was ravenous to get my hands on my copy as soon as it was delivered this morning, but was quickly disappointed.

First, Amazon's packaging was utterly and despicably inadequate. (See Photo) My book was shipped in a box, with *no packing material* of any kind. At first glance, it seemed OK. But when I took a close look at my dust jacket, I was extremely upset to find that the gold foil lettering for "Harry Potter" had been rubbed away and destroyed completely in some places leaving ugly, black matte in its place-- pock marking the otherwise handsome gold lettering. Also, the matte-finish of the dust jacket had been rubbed so badly due to the bad packaging that it left scars and shiny markings where the matte finish was worn off. For an obvious gift/collectors item, this is absolutely unacceptable. I called Amazon and they didn't seem to "get" what my fuss was all about and just offered to ship a replacement which, undoubtedly, will be shipped in exactly the same way.

Second, after I got over my initial outrage over the shipping/packaging. I sat down to enjoy the actual book itself, which as I said is absolutely extraordinary! I was extremely cautious handling the book and binding, being unsure how tolerant the binding is of weight. I carefully opened both the right and left sides of the binding and supported the weight of the opened cover using a small pillow. By the time I reached the back 3/4th of the book (on Professor McGonagall's full page illustration) the binding separated from the spine the very first time I turned the page. In other words, the binding fell apart during my very first pass through the book. (See Photo). Another thing that really drove me crazy was the way that the stitched in book mark was carelessly folded into the book. It left dents all over my pages (See Photo), which of course had to be on a full page illustration of Hagrid!

Needless to say I'm in awe how Bloomsbury has managed to put together such an incredible project, with JK Rowling's remarkable literature and Jim Kay's otherworldly illustrations-- and allowed it to be put together in a low quality binding! I noticed that all of the previous Harry Potter books were printed and bound in USA (some in Mexico) but this book was printed and bound in China. I would like to hope that they would quality check a thing like this, but perhaps not. Either way, I am extremely disappointed in the quality/binding of my book. I would be interested to know if others are seeing the same thing. And please, Amazon, pack these books in bubble wrap and packing material! Not all alone in a box...

Update (October 9th): I have finally received my new book and it was in much, much better condition. The cover and spine were tight, intact and falling apart from the binding like my original copy. Addtl photos to follow...

Big and beautiful

The numerous illustrations are a wonderful addition to a brilliant book and will bring the story to life for young readers just growing into the series. Be aware, however, that books in this new illustrated series are quite substantial in size and weight, with pages so wide that column format is used for the text. I imagine that later books in the series will rival encyclopedias. Prepare your bookshelf accordingly.

An essential reference for for food lovers going to Tokyo

I am not an anthropologist or a foodie who is steeped in the industry. But I did go to Tokyo for 4 days with some friends to find excellent sushi. Having seen Tsukiji in a couple of television specials and worked in a much smaller market in the past I thought it would be interesting to see the real thing. Perhaps I should blame Dr. Bestor for the fact that I ended up spending two half-days engrossed in Tsukiji market but once I read the book and got over the initial shock of the place I felt like I had an inside edge and couldn't pull myself away. The book does an excellent job of balancing personal insights and experiences with objective accounts of the market's history and statistics and provides a behind the scenes understanding of supply and distribution activity as well as the multigenerational, family-run stalls. It's one thing to see the tuna auctions; it's another to have an understanding of how the fish got there, who buys them, how they are sold to the supply and distribution chains, the role of the vendors, the history of the building and other details that give it depth. In the end, after four days of tramping around Tokyo to sample great sushi and other foods, we agreed that the best sushi we had was at a tiny restaurant in the outer market. And my visits to Tsukiji - which is sadly be being replaced by a more modern facility that can better meet the needs of a city that has grown since the facility was built - were the most fascinating part of my visit thanks largely to Dr. Bestor's book.

This book is not just about fish

"If a maritime species can be consumed by human beings, in Japan, it almost certainly has been," writes Harvard anthropologist and sushi aficionado Theodore Bestor.

And the place to get it is Tsukiji at the mouth of the Sumida River in Tokyo, the world's biggest fish market, where millions of pounds of fish a day and billions of dollars worth of seafood a year are received, sold (usually more than once) and shipped. That's about five times bigger than New York's (lately extinct) Fulton Fish Market.

Although Tsukiji controls only a tenth of Japan's seafood business, the Japanese are so devoted to seafood and have so much money that fisheries around the world operate on Tsukiji's beat.

New fisheries have been created just for Tsukiji, like the air-flown fresh Atlantic bluefin tuna business. Tuna is king at Tsukiji, to the point that conservationists fear the extinction of the Atlantic bluefin.

Bestor's "Tsukiji" is comprehensive, neatly fitting the market into both historical and present-day contexts, but his main interest is in what he calls intermediate wholesalers.

There are about 1,600 of them, narrowly specialized. They are proud of their alleged origin as supporters of the first ruling Shogun in Edo (now Tokyo), of their knowledge of fish (but, of course, the younger generation doesn't know what the old-timers think they should), of their hometowns, their high schools, their religious sodalities, family ties, festivals and staying power.

Staying power especially. Some dealers claim to be of the 17th generation. Tsukiji was the famous fish market of Nihonbashi until the Great Kanto earthquake destroyed it in 1923. Rebuilt in a new location, Tsukiji seems to have carried its history along with it successfully.

It is facing an uncertain future again, as usual, says Bestor. The challenges come from the market structure, which is shifting from auctions to direct, negotiated deals. And from the municipal government, which wants to move the cramped, decaying market.

It's within walking distance of Ginza, and many dealers worry that moving away will kill the market. It will almost certainly kill the "outer" market of little stalls and restaurants that congregates around the inner market. (Bestor provides a guide for tourists.)

All markets have, to anthropologists, a certain sameness, but Tsukiji has some uniquely Japanese features. Sakidori is the oddest, compared with American methods.

The auctions begin around 5 a.m., too late for supermarket chains that have to wrestle their purchases through Tokyo's traffic and also need extra time to clean, cut, wrap and price packages. Smaller local shops don't need so much lead time.

Sakidori allows the big guys to carry off whatever they want before the auction, which gives them an advantage in obtaining the best quality items. But the price is set by the smaller guys who stay later.

Another obvious difference between Tsukiji and American markets is the place of religious rites at Tsukiji. Japanese fishmongers may not be any more religious than American businessmen, but they are more likely to organize business matters in religious contexts, from parading at festivals to going as business groups to famous shrines.

Bestor has attempted to write a book for both academic anthropologists and for general readers, and cheerfully invites the general reader to skip some chapters.

It's worth the effort of reading it all. This book is not just about fish.

Detailed book on a fascinating subject

I've never seen the Tsukiji fish market in operation, but I'm quite sure that it's fascinating, and one of the best reasons I have for thinking that is this big and detailed book. Theodore Bestor is a professor of anthropology at Harvard, but unlike a stereotypical anthropologist, he doesn't study fossils or primitive tribes. He studies contemporary Japanese economic institutions.

The book is a serious work of academic scholarship but, happily, it's only a little less readable for that. Professor Bestor descends into opaque academic jargon only once and then pretty briefly. (It rather feels as though he does it once just to prove that he can.) Other that that brief bit, there's only a smattering of academic jargon in the book and most of it is perfectly understandable. Professor Bestor is occasionally a bit repetitive, and there are a few inelegant chapter introductions and summaries ("In this chapter I have..."), but there's very little here that hinders an interested lay-person's enjoyment. Besides, who but an academic would spend 15 years visiting and learning about a fish market? Anyone who has an interest in Japanese culture should be glad that Professor Bestor did because there's a lot to learn from reading the book.

Professor Bestor explains the market's history, its seventeenth-century origin in nearby Nihonbashi, its move to Tsukiji in 1923, its move into the current buildings in 1935, its closure during the second world war, its resurgence in the 1950s, and its likely future move to a new location across the Sumida river. In equally careful detail, he tells us about the market's mechanisms and its participants: the auctions and the seven auction-houses, the hundreds of wholesalers and how they do business, how the market changes in anticipation and reaction to consumers' changing preferences, and so on.

There's no question that there are a lot of interesting facts here. I'd never have guessed that sushi as we know it was invented in the middle of the nineteenth century. But, perhaps not surprisingly, Professor Bestor is at his best when he's interpreting and analyzing as an anthropologist. Economic transactions don't happen in a vacuum.

We get a wonderfully clear picture of the numerous overlapping formal and informal relationships among the market's participants and between them and the various parts of local and national government that license and regulate the market. We also get to see wholesalers changing their businesses, not just in response to short-term market changes, but also in response to larger-scale economic trends. While they were once exclusively family businesses, many are now becoming increasingly like ordinary corporations.

Japanese social structures are famously opaque to outsiders and Professor Bestor has done a fabulous job learning about and explaining a fascinating place. And his descriptions are good enough that you can almost smell the fish. There's also a useful guide to to visiting the market at the end of the book.

Okay, so I read Scarecrow Returns last night. It's a hodgepodge of Wikipedia articles, recycled conspiracy theories, insanely bad prose, stupid characters and some of the worst dialogue ever attempted in the English language.

And I LOVED it.

Matthew Reilly owns the market in so-bad-they're-brilliant action books. You pick up a Matthew Reilly book as a kind of mental shiatsu massage: just sit back and let Mr. Reilly pummel your brain with one insane scene after another, each of which is delivered in prose so reliably crude that you can't wait to see how he'll debase the art of fiction next. And like shiatsu, these individually painful experiences combine into a wonderful kind of bliss. After three or four hundred pages, Reilly's writing can completely obliterate your mind and relieve you of such troubling burdens as thought, logic, empathy, and standards. When you finally put down one of his novels, you are mentally limp, scrubbed clean, and ready to take on something new.

For people who are interested in avoiding plot spoilers, you might not want to read the rest of this review. But honestly, you wouldn't pick up a Matthew Reilly book if you were interested being surprised by the plot. The plot is totally irrelevant. Scarecrow Returns could be a retelling of The Old Man and the Sea or a newly revised version of The Joy of Cooking, and it wouldn't make the slightest difference as long as Matthew Reilly was writing it. The only relevant question in a Matthew Reilly book is this: How much insane action can Reilly pack in betwen the covers? Scarecrow Returns delivered. Imagine taking the paragraph below and expanding it into 360 pages, without wasting a single word on character development, realism, research, good dialogue, transition scenes, or anything else that impedes the author's ability to blow stuff up. To speed things along and avoid wasting your time on useless descriptions that don't involve violence (i.e., prose), most of the locations are rendered as simple line drawings and diagrams in between chapters. You won't have to worry about missing a point, because Reilly is a master of non-subtle emphasis: italics, exclamation points, single word paragraphs, and when all else fails, use of the sentence: "The sight was absolutely incredible." And even with all these nods to extreme efficiency in delivering action, there is still a shortage of space.

In a 360-page book, the main character barely had time to: use a friendly robot to shoot down a helicopter; use a speedboat to escape the destruction of a French submarine; kill 70 - 80 people with various machine guns; blow up a control tower with plastic explosives and survive the tower's collapse by bracing himself against a mattress; jump a fuel truck off a cement wall and arrest its fall with two Maghooks; destroy a hovering V-22 Osprey with a falling truck; jump a cement mixer into an airplane and then fly the airplane; fall in love with a French assassin whose Maghook is longer than his; board an airplane using his Maghook while driving a Jeep down a runway off the edge of a cliff; exit a flying airplane in a different Jeep but use his Maghook to reboard the airplane while the Jeep falls into an iceberg; throw a fake-sounding nuclear bomb (red uranium?) out of an airplane into the ocean before it ignites a rocket fuel vapor cloud that will destroy China; get captured; get tortured; watch as a friend is tortured with a forklift; watch an acquaintance's head get eaten by rats; escape captivity thanks to the tender friendship he developed with a robot (which robot, by the way, is one of the most developed characters in the book), and kill 70 - 80 additional people with various machine guns; storm some place called Bear Island with the help of an experimental submersible speedboat; kill 4 - 5 mutant, highly-aggressive polar bears leftover from a singularly implausible Soviet weapons program; storm some place called Acid Island; get shot down in an airplane by a Soviet missile; drive a crashed airplane into a river; blast a cement truck through the wall of a floating, crashed airplane; launch a floating crashed airplane off a waterfall by retracting its landing gear; kill a drug-crazed soldier while several hundred feet under Arctic water inside of a crashed airplane; perform first aid upon / woo a French assassin while also paddling a life raft back into battle at a secret Russian arctic island weapons base; have text message conversations with a guy in Washington, D.C. while shooting people with a machine gun above the Arctic Circle; unravel (by using a bullet-proof wrist-mounted computer that apparently gets wi-fi anywhere and never runs low on battery power) a 30 year old CIA plot to keep America on top by incinerating everyone in China; defy logic, gravity, and the manufacturer's instructions for his belt; survive the direct impact of a Soviet nuclear missile; meet the President; note that Hollywood films had really gone downhill since "Predator"; finally get the French off his back for those harmless previous incidents in prior novels where he blew up a French submarine (Ice Station) and a French aircraft carrier (Scarecrow); get a medal; see a down-to-earth therapist in Baltimore; and go out for dinner and drinks with a French assassin, whose name in English, it turns out, means Fox.

And that's without even mentioning anything the Scarecrow's loyal sidekick Mother did.

A return to form.

This is my first book review, so please bear with me.

I have been a fan of Matthew Reilly's books for a long while and enjoyed them thoroughly, whilst still being able to acknowledge their shortcomings. I was dissappointed with 5 Greatest Warriors, and to a lesser extent with 6 Sacred Stones, as I believed they were becoming a little too "over the top". I know, this is Matthew Reilly I'm talking about, but these ones should almost have been comic books rather than fiction books. I was somewhat concerned that this new book may have suffered from a similar fate, but fortunately this hasn't been the case.

The return of Scarecrow I feel has been a return to form for Matthew Reilly. The same formula is present, go-to-woe action adventure with over the top stunts and set-pieces. Bad villains and good heroes. It's not Shakespeare, but it's not supposed to be. The character development of the leads is a welcome addition, exploring some of Scarecrow's past, as well as how he has gotten over the events of previous books.

Overall this book is a easy prospect to review. If you enjoy his books, particularly those from the Scarecrow series, you will enjoy this. I didn't enjoy it quite as much as Scarecrow or Area 7 (probably more due to my current frame of mind than anything, maybe also since I read it on Kindle and I'm not sure if this alters the experience of reading), but it is definitely a fun cover-to-cover read. If you didn't like his previous books then move along, nothing to see here.

If you are new to Matthew Reilly then this isn't the place to start. Get "Ice Station" out, it is a great book and not at all out-of-date. Non-stop action is a signature of his books, and they are hard to put down, so if you have some spare time for some a good read they are definitely recommended.

Scarecrow and the army of thieves

Now I don't want to join the growing band of people whinging about extravagant kindle prices, but in this case I have to register my complaint. Did you know that this book is available as a hardback for $20 or under in all of Australias big Department stores. I would have loved to have bought it on Kindle for $9.99, as I cosider it a once only read style of book, not a collectable. But at 26 bucks you just have to be joking. I'll be off to Target tomorrow to buy it. The new Ian Rankin and David Baldacci books are also available for the same price as kindle editions. You're pricing yourself out of the market. I've reduced myself to buying .99 cent unknown authors on my kindle and have gone back to hard copies for new releases. The Kindle editions simply aren't worth what you are trying to screw out of people for them.

Not for those without a background

Tried this book as part of my independent studying. It was way over my head as I really had trouble with the practice problems. Unless you have a solid background in proof methodology, induction, sequences/series and advanced algebra (my pre-calc course didn't include these topics), you need not apply for any of Spivak's high level works. I excelled in pre-calculus at a junior college where only 20% passed but have quickly realized that this is no indication one is good at mathematics. Now I'm reconsidering my pursuit of a Bachelors in mathematics. This is no knock on Spivak, I'm just warning you not to purchase the book until you are ready. Fortunately, I bought it new and returned it for a full refund. I wanted to teach math, but now I might pursue something more practical like accounting.

Using this to supplement my Calculus 4th edition I was finally able to understand some of the book. Most of it was problem based learning so having the solutions really helped as I was able to check my answers and make sure I was learning the material right. I would highly recommend.

I have been happily designing circuits for 30+ years

I bought my first copy ( and still have it ) when i was 20 something. I bought my second copy as a backup and nostalgia a few years ago at 50. This book ( actually it only took a few pages of it ) turned on the light switch for me as an engineer. Now at 53, I have been happily designing circuits for 30+ years. I loved building things before this book, but after it, I enjoyed really designing things. The engineering classes I took added detail to what learned here. But reading this each night before bed gave me the framework to hang al the rest on.

When I ran an electronics lab at a university, I would tell my students to get this book and consider making at transmitter or receiver. It is not that they needed radio, it was that radio design exercises so many facets of electronic design. Bias selection, dynamic range, signal to noise ratio, saturation effects, thermal drifts, voltage regulation, etc...

There is nothing like getting your hands dirty to really learn something, and there is nothing like this book that condenses it down to the nitty gritty without shortchanging the real principals and mathematics.

We are all lucky to have Wes Haward and Doug DeMaw ( silent key ) as our instructions and mentors.

Poor quality, messy and incomplete maps, and missing chapters. A rushed mess all around.

One of my favorite parts about From Software games are the accompanying hardback guides that are always polished, with detailed maps and strategies. Up to this point I've purchased four hardback guides for From Software games: Dark Souls, Dark Souls 2, Bloodborne, and Bloodborne The Old Hunters. Unfortunately, I did not notice until it was too late that the DS3 would have a different publisher. Prima has really dropped the ball with this one, the guide seems like it was rushed out the door with little to no editing. I'll just list some of the things I've noticed so far after only looking at it for maybe 20 minutes:

1. The pages are warped and thin, it seriously feels like they may fall out if the guide is opened to a page too many times.

2. There are markings on the sides of the pages indicating which chapter of the guide you are currently in. This also reveals that Prima apparently forgot to include three chapters??? There is no chapter 1, 2, or 10 to be found.

3. The maps have NO enemy locations. Zero. When Future Press was making the guides they had a really nice system for marking where weak and strong enemies appeared on their maps, but there is no such demarcation to be found on the Prima maps.

4. For each area there is a sort of "complete" map that shows the entire area's map. This map does have item locations on it. However, when breaking down the area section by section the "section" maps have no item locations, forcing you to return to multiple pages before where you are (a clear issue when the book already feels ready to fall apart).

5. The "complete" maps of each area have a bizarre and complex system of symbols used to show locations of various things in the area, but the symbols are small and look similar to one another.

6. The way the text and pictures are organized is just... ugly. Some pictures are split across the binding, some are stretched to be a full page (despite clearly not being taken at a high enough resolution to make it look nice blown up). The text is cluttered and every other word is bolded to indicate something important in the section... but how about just make the maps more complete instead of making the text a mess to navigate?

Overally, I honestly cannot believe this made it out the door, there are just so many issues and it is clearly incomplete (how do you just forget three chapters?) Considering the price I just can't see any reason to get this guide, you can find all the important information online in the wikis anyway. The whole reason these guides are nice to get is that they are usually nice QUALITY and have detailed, thought out maps. This cannot be said for this guide. Seriously, buy at your own risk.

Possibly the worst guide I own.

One of the worse guides I've bought.

-Right from the beginning the table of contents goes from page 42 to 224 with no breaks in between. None of the walk-through areas are labeled in the table of contents.

-It doesn't have an index...really, it doesn't. Know the name of an item you are trying to find and want to find it in the guide? Good luck searching for it without an index.

-No weapon/armor stats past level one. Want to know which weapons are best to level up to max level for your build? Well you won't find it in this guide.

-Past Dark Souls guides also showed what each point in leveling up did to your character with exact numbers, this guide does not.

-The guide on getting items is absolutely terrible! Here is a quote on how to get an item sitting off the edge of a cliff that is very hard to get: "...experiment with getting this loot." Seriously? Thanks guide.

-There isn't a word about New Game+. Not one word about it.

Dark Souls 1 had one of the best guides ever and this one doesn't even come close. It's missing even the most basic of information about the game.

Soooo bad! Disappointed to say the least.

WE WANT FUTURE PRESS BACK :(

Prima's guide for Dark Souls 3 looks nice, but provides the bare minimum in content. The fact that From Software decided to go with Prima after Future Press had done an immaculate job on all three previous Soulsborne game guides is mind boggling. I guess they were cheaper because this guide certainly is. No bestiary?! No index?! Missing chapters?! The bonus hardbound notebook is actually the nicest thing about this purchase. If you feel you have to buy this guide to complete the Dark Souls trilogy (like myself), I can't blame you. But if you just feel you need a guide to help you with the game, DO NOT BUY! Use wiki's and youtube for reference.
