The MouseDriver Chronicles, by John Lusk, Kyle Harrison

When John Lusk and Kyle Harrison graduated from Wharton in 1999, nearly all of their entrepreneurially minded classmates set their sights on conquering the dot-com world. To the almost universal disdain of their friends and professors, these two turned down tempting job offers, borrowed money from friends and family, loaded up on credit card debt, and decided to start a single-product company to manufacture and market a computer mouse shaped like the head of a golf club. They watched enviously as nearly all of their friends became millionaires in the dot-com boom, but they persevered and forged their own path. To chart their progress and to keep themselves motivated against the odds, they kept a diary that recorded the realities of their everyday life as entrepreneurs. Out of their diary entries grew The MouseDriver Chronicles, an intimate, insightful, and often funny look into the minds of two entrepreneurs and how they brought a simple idea to market. From The MouseDriver Chronicles:"School was just about over, and the wondrous combination of brick-baking heat and relentless high humidity that defines summer in south Philadelphia wasn't too far off. We couldn't afford to wait around for it. We needed to blaze to San Francisco and get rolling. Fine. No problem. Except we didn't yet have an office in San Francisco. Or a place to live. Or MouseDrivers in stock. We had all our plans and ambition, but everything real about running a business was ahead of us. Immediately ahead."

Amazon.com Review
John Lusk and Kyle Harrison seemed slightly out of their minds when, unlike their fellow MBAs, they skipped on flashy, lucrative offers from dot-coms to become entrepreneurs. Specifically, to produce and sell a computer mouse designed to look like a golf-club head (a state-of-the-art titanium driver to be exact). "I wanted to feel the pain of starting a company," Lusk writes in this clear and insightful memoir, "to go into debt, have my ego crushed and experience first-hand the thrill of working like a dog for months without a paycheck." Since he also expected to make a million in two years, it's not surprising that all these come to pass. The duo struggle with the fundamentals of making and selling, run-ins with typhoons, shabby off-shore manufacturing, and soon dot-com envy sets in. But when the dot-coms start going belly-up, this little-retail-product-company-that-could shows that the basics of business still apply--a handy lesson for those wondering what happened after the dot-com crash, as well as any would-be entrepreneurs wanting to make a go of it. --Lesley Reed

From Publishers Weekly
In this unconventional memoir, Wharton graduates Lusk and Harrison (actually, just Lusk; Harrison contributed only the epilogue) tell how they started a company the old-fashioned way: they had an idea, raised some money, then manufactured and sold their product. That product is the MouseDriver, a computer mouse resembling the head of a golf club. Not exactly an earth-shattering concept, but for Lusk and Harrison the product is almost beside the point. Their intent here is to show how, in an age of venture capitalists and "revolutionary" business models, it's still possible for non-dot-commers to start a company and make a buck. They founded Platinum Concepts Inc. in the summer of 1999 and set up shop in their shared loft in San Francisco, then a hi-tech boomtown. Obstacles in the beginning were legion: the first MouseDrivers were prone to falling apart; a typhoon almost wiped out their Hong Kong manufacturer; and retail inexperience caused them to miss the Christmas rush. But they persevered, and within 18 months had made $600,000 in sales and moved 50,000 units. Not quite GE, but not a failure either. The authors argue that almost anyone can achieve this kind of modest success; it just takes intelligence, determination and a good idea (although an MBA probably doesn't hurt). Though the book is occasionally less than enlightening (a blow-by-blow account of a Sony Playstation session is unlikely to help budding entrepreneurs), on the whole Lusk and Harrison provide solid, entertaining insights into how to start a business. This is a refreshing alternative to the recent wave of narcissistic dot-com memoirs. (Jan.)Forecast: The authors were the subject of a cover story in Inc. magazine in February, and have been covered widely in golf magazines. That, and a splashy jacket, may help buyers pick up their book. It will mainly appeal to ambitious young entrepreneurs especially those who've had it with the dot-com life.

From Library Journal
Lusk and Harrison are cofounders and essentially the only employees of Platinum Concepts, a one-product start-up located in the shark-filled waters of San Francisco. In this engaging work, they describe how, after their graduation from the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business, they avoided the typical banking, consulting, and dot-com jobs and instead set out to experience the ins and outs of life as entrepreneurs. Starting with their decision to develop and market a computer mouse that looks like the head of a golf club (MouseDriver), this well-written chronicle effectively describes the many challenges they overcame, including the hunt for a marketable product, the pitfalls of product development, the problems associated with manufacturing, and the need for flexible business and marketing plans, common objectives, and industry-experienced mentors. Along the way, the authors reveal an appreciation of the importance of logistics, distribution, patents, and trademarks and show how they learned to carry on despite legal challenges, unexpected results, and business lulls. An interesting and insightful study; recommended for both academic and public libraries. Norm Hutcherson, California State Univ., Bakersfield

Informative and Funny
By Amazon Customer
Yes, while there are no advanced concepts discussed in this book, it's a solid, inspiring and funny story of the highs and lows encountered when two Ivy League business school grads shun the call of the dot-com frenzy to follow their dream of selling a computer mouse shaped like the head of a golf driver -- an "old-school" business they bootstrapped while all around them, millions of dollars were being thrown and wasted on half-baked dot-com startup ideas.

Rather than tell you about how awesome they are and how every decision they made proved successful, they humbly reveal just how confusing, challenging and exciting starting a business can be.

To anyone who has ever created a product, had it manufactured and tried to market it, this story will be very familiar as the guys face challenges and obstacles for which their well-laid-out business plan never accounted.

The real lesson in the book is that no plan ever works out the way you think it will. You cannot know all the variables involved. All that time spent analyzing and preparing is better spent taking action in the face of uncertainty. Even when obstacles arise, so do opportunities that would have never been known to you had that first step not been taken. Lots of people have good ideas, but a good idea is only as valuable as the action taken to transform it into something real.

I only found this book after hearing about it on a business podcast. Very glad I gave this one a read.

Story that is rarely told
By M. Lang
This book provides a fairly detailed story about the founding of a company that produces a computer mouse shaped like the head of a golf club. I don't know that there are any obvious lessons here. It is unique, however, in how it captures not only the series of events as they really occurred, failures and successes, but also the thinking and emotions among the two founders. The authors (entrepreneurs) had captured much of the story along the way in the form of a blog or newsletter that they shared with friends and associates as the company was developing, and this forms the basis for the book. For that reason, one gets a better perspective than happens when interviewing entrepreneurs after the fact, when they often leave out critical things that they passed through and just don't remember or sense as important.

The book covers from the concept development in business school to a point where the company has profitable sales (if not a major success). The major contribution is taking some of the mystery out of what it is like to be an entrepreneur. It reminds me of the much earlier book "Soul of a New Machine" where Tracy Kidder (I believe) lived with and documented the trials and tribulations of a team developing a new computer under a lot of pressure. This is recommended reading for anyone contemplating entrepreneurship or those who want to better understand entrepreneurs.

great lessons to learn
By I Know
Read this book for an MBA class on venture strategy, and it's a good view into the mistakes and successes of an old school startup. I moved to California at the same time as these guys were doing this and watched every dot com startup implode in the wake of the bubble burst in 2000. It was cool to read about the bootstrapping these guys did in the face if that to actually succeed, at least minimally. The mistakes they made were pretty obvious, and they were humble about what they learned from them, which is the best kind of lesson you can learn before going out and doing it on your own. It's worth the quick read.

Damn it, Ryan Gosling.

Got this for my girlfriend for Christmas.

Pros: Coloring book is really well done and quite amusing. Lots of activities and she seems to enjoy it because it's relaxing for her to color in hunks after a long day.

Cons: Coloring book made it even more abundantly clear that if my girlfriend ever meets Ryan Gosling, I'm toast.

This coloring book is not designed for coloring.
By Amazon Customer
The pictures were good, but the paper is so thin you can see the words bleeding through from the other side of the page, and its slick, thin paper makes coloring difficult. Also, it doesn't open wide enough to comfortably color the pictures. I bought this as a good gag gift and for the poor design itself I wish I hadn't. If they changed these issues it would be worth the money.

Fantastic!
By Shimmer_Me_Timbers
I haven't even started coloring and I've already gotten so much mileage out of it... even my grandmother was highly entertained. My only criticism is that they are missing a few "beefcakes" (namely Tom Hiddleston, Chris Evans, Zachary Quinto, Chris Pine, and the Hemsworth brothers... to name a few). But that won't hinder my enjoyment of this coloring book.

From Booklist
Women “trapped . . . in an overheated elevator are forced to strip to avoid heatstroke,” so Edna tore open Sally’s blouse, panting, “our lives are at stake.” This latest from Lambda nominee Nolan pays obvious homage to mid-twentieth-century pulp titillations, from its cover, featuring incredibly well-endowed women straining their pullover sweaters, through the entire story, which is set in the early 1960s when many felt that the “Fab Four” would be a “fly-by-night sensation” soon forgotten, and a window air-conditioning unit was still “something of a luxury.” Nolan’s tale of a wealthy debutante turned penniless working girl gathers speed as clues multiply and irresistibly butch Lon, a shady character, connects plucky heroine Maxie to underworld crime. Many will revel in the camp layering of clichs and other contrived staples of the genre, such as, “For an instant, they ate each other up with their eyes.” A very funny lesbian pulp romance for light summer reading. --Whitney Scott

This is a fun book. It is a satire that takes place in 1964 and involves ex-debutante Maxie Mainwaring exploring career paths while getting caught up in some mob activities. It is full of earnest exclamations, alliteration, and the vocabulary of the time. The sex scenes are mild but are described with humorous analogies pertinent to the time period.

Hyuk Hyuk
By Richard Rahl
Yes, this is another 5 star review. But this book deserves it. It's a fun, light-hearted (and maybe light-headed) read about the adventures of rogue debutante Maxie Mainwaring and the denizens of the Magdalena Arms women's residence. Maxie is disinherited by her bossy mother and forced to get a jobs. More accurately, she is forced to get a series of jobs which put her on the trail of a dreaded Scandinavian crime syndicate, run by an unexpected 'queenpin.'
'Maxie Mainwaring' has been called a spoof of 50s pulp fiction. Not being an expert on 50s pulp fiction, I can't confirm or deny, but it was a fun read. I see the author has at least one other book on the denizens of the Magdalena Arms and another (Dolly Dingle, Lesbian Landlady) coming out in September. I'll probably give those a try. She also has a book of lesbian horse stories, but I'm not sure about that. I'm not really into horses.

Besides the horse stories. A deeply enjoyable book, on so many levels. One of the best pieces of fiction about lesbians out there. Seriously.

About the Author
Jack Crenshaw holds a Ph.D. in physics from Auburn University (specialties in math, electronics, and advanced dynamics). He wrote his first computer program in 1956 and his first microcomputer software a real-time, floating-point, Kalman filter-driven controller in 1976. He has been working with real-time software for embedded systems ever since, and thinks he might be beginning to get the hang of it. He is currently a senior principal design engineer for Alliant TechSystems, Inc., a contributing editor for Embedded Systems Programming magazine, and author of the popular 'Programmer's Toolbox' column. In his spare time, he likes to dabble in compiler theory, guidance and control theory, and help rehabilitate orphaned and injured wildlife.

This book deserves 10 stars
By K. Baum
Run, don't walk to get this book!

Remember that numerical analysis class you took, in which you came away really understanding nothing besides how to plug-and-chug? Those "black box" numerical integration routines with "magic" coefficients that came from who knows where? Did you ever get the relationship between z transforms and "backward differences?"

This book explains all this and more in a clear, readable, and dare I say, even entertaining presentation (I read it in one sitting cover-to-cover, which is typically impossible for a technical book.)

Over the years, I've purchased quite a few technical reference books. Most seem to be weighty self-congratulatory monuments to the authors' personal ability to present fantastically-terse-yet-look-how-rigorous mathematical proofs. Maybe 1 in 100 is actually written in a down-to-earth, accessible way without pages of dense jargon and overly complicated formulations.

"Math Toolkit for Real-time Programming" is simply the most well-written numerical programming book I've ever come across, and perhaps one of the best technical books on any subject, period. I wish all books were this readable.

Do yourself a favor and get this book ASAP.

2008 Update: As I go back and read this review 6 years later, it sounds a bit over the top, but I _still_ really like this book. It's rare to find a technical book that can communicate the "common sense" behind mathematical concepts and algorithms without requiring the reader to have a Math PhD. Does the book address every possible topic in numerical computing? No, it is not a comprehensive reference, but the topics it DOES cover are very well explained indeed. I DEFY you to find a better explanation anywhere of the basic techniques used in numerical integration. I just wish Dr. Crenshaw would write more books and explain other stuff I use but never really "got" in EE class.

A few of the reviewers complained about the relative uselessness of the included programming material -- I would say their comments are largely on target (although the author clearly states that the purpose of the material is to illustrate the frequency of "gotchas" in even the most simplistic of programs); however, the true value in this book is not the programming examples, it's the insight given into the techniques. Dr. Crenshaw has a passion for communicating the intuition behind the methods (I also encourage you to check out his columns in Embedded Systems Programming.) Finding someone who can pull that off successfully is rare. The numerical techniques he discusses (doing raw math without the benefit of library routines) are broken down to their basics and completely described in a manner I have seen in no other book. The reason I wrote this review is because I _understood_ a lot more after reading this book than any others covering similar material (Acton; Ralston & Rabinowitz; standard BSEE/CompSci textbooks etc).

The information in this one is timeless. Useful for your entire career.

Crenshaw is a really smart guy. He explains the algorithms, and *how* he figured them out and optimized them.

The book reads like and exploration. It almost seems like the author isn't exactly sure where he'll end up -- he's learning with you as you go along. I don't think that's the case, but it makes the reading fun (considering the topic).

Falls short of expectations
By William Jackson
I have yet to find a book that explains "complex" math algorithms well and give clear coding examples that follow. This book is no exception. I suppose after reading some of the other reviews, I had high expectations for this book, but it failed to deliver.

My number one complaint about the book is that there are very little or no comments in the code. There are pages of equations and derivations of the equations followed by code of a function. I didn't understand how the code related to the equations. It would have been a tremendous help to put a one line comment next to each section or line of the code referring to an equation number. Many equations deal with variables like x, y, or a. It doesn't help me much when a variable inside of code is called "x". I have no idea of its use or where it came from. It would have been even better if after each section of the math, the author put the line of code it referred to, and after the algortihm was complete, write the whole function down.

Another minor issue I had with the book was that it was written in the first person and the author tried to make humorous remarks throughout. I understand that he was trying to make it fun and while some people may appreciate it, I found it annoying.

The author does not seem to follow his own advice. The book is clearly not written for any one programming language. Most of the code is written in C, but he has references to pascal, c++, and says that fortran is basically a dead language but refers to fortran throughout the book. He makes it a point to state that he has good coding style and has a whole chapter on constants. He #defines One as 1.0 to avoid wasting run time cycles from converting an int to a double. The compiler may do this, but he adds "to take the chance is bad programming practice". I can see his point, but the problem is he never uses defines in his own coding samples when he writes code like double sum = 0;

The book is divided into 3 sections. The first section deals with constants and errors. There was no math and I am an experienced programmer and did not find much use for this.

The second section of the book is about square roots, sin, arctan, and logs. The algorithms seemed ok, and as expected, are probably faster and less precise than the standard library functions of a compiler. I've seen them before and they were not useful to me because many of them required an initial guess to be input. I work with graphics and such a broad range of numbers that I don't have an initial guess and therefore can't use the methods.

The third section deals with numerical calculus and was the major reason I bought the book. I thought the refresher and review of basic calculus was good. It was a bit stale in my mind, so it was nice to read about it again. However, I want to be able to apply the code in the book to real world programming. The key link and understanding of the code as it relates to the equations just wasn't there. Also, I was hoping there would be more code. There are whole chapters that don't have a single line of code written in it.
