Sphinx, by Anne Garréta

Sphinx is the remarkable debut novel, originally published in 1986, by the incredibly talented and inventive French author Anne Garrta, one of the few female members of Oulipo, the influential and exclusive French experimental literary group whose mission is to create literature based on mathematical and linguistic restraints, and whose ranks include Georges Perec and Italo Calvino, among others.

A beautiful and complex love story between two characters, the narrator, "I," and their lover, A***, written without using any gender markers to refer to the main characters, Sphinx is a remarkable linguistic feat and paragon of experimental literature that has never been accomplished before or since in the strictly-gendered French language.

Sphinx is a landmark text in the feminist and LGBT literary canon appearing in English for the first time.

Anne Garrta (b. 1962) is a lecturer at the University of Rennes II and research professor of literature and Romance studies at Duke University. She joined the Oulipo in 2000, becoming the first member to join born after the Oulipo was founded. Garrta won France's prestigious Prix Mdicis in 2002, awarded each year to an author whose "fame does not yet match their talent," for her novel Pas un jour.

Emma Ramadan is a graduate of Brown University and received her master's in literary translation from the American University of Paris. Her translation of Anne Parian's Monospace is forthcoming from La Presse. She is currently on a Fulbright Fellowship for literary translation in Morocco.

Review
"The set-up is such a classic, relatable tale of falling in -- and out -- of love that one wonders why gender has always been such a huge factor in how we discuss relationships, in fiction and otherwise. . . . So, the author, and the translator, created their own language, championing love and desire over power and difference." — Maddie Crum, Huffington Post

"The strength of [Sphinx] lies in its philosophical eloquence . . . Take away gender and race from the book, and what’s left? Love, viewed as a nihilistic transcendence . . . considerably more than a language game.” — Adam Mars-Jones, London Review of Books

"In this sense, just as the novel is genderless, it is also genderfull . . . Garrta finds endless shades of in between and out of bounds, her characters taking shapes no other text before—or since—has imagined." — Lauren Elkin, Bookforum

"Garrta’s aim was to overthrow gender binaries carried by language, and in light of recent demands by transgender groups to use gender neutral pronouns, Sphinx seems curiously prescient." —Catherine Humble, The Times Literary Supplement (TLS)

"[Garreta's] been called influential and groundbreaking, and with this, her first translation into English, it is easy to see why. Sphinx is an important contribution to queer literature—fascinating, intelligent, and very welcome." —Lambda Literary

"Sphinx is an almost effortlessly readable, atmospheric love story, like a Marguerite Duras novel starring a pair of genderless paramours who haunt the after-hours clubs and cabarets of Paris. The conceit is so simple and so potent that it’s impossible to get too far without pondering big questions about the role gender plays in the way we think about love in literature — and in life." —Flavorwire Staff Pick by editor-in-chief Judy Berman

"For Garrta, it just may be possible then that the body occupies the space of language as powerfully as its capacity to produce it." — Tyler Curtis, BOMB Magazine

"Sphinx is a novel of passion and loss that transcends gender and speaks to the universality of desire and loss, morality, spiritual crisis and the need to connect and belong. It’s also a novel that captivates and propels the reader to question the boundaries of desire and memory—and which one ultimately holds us captive." —Monica Carter, Three Percent

"A unique novel, Sphinx succeeds in telling a love story without names or genders, allowing the reader to interpret the novel however they wish. Set in Paris and calling to mind the work of James Baldwin, this both feminist and LGBT book is deeply evocative in its word usage as it celebrates love without the constraints of gender." — World Literature Today

"I must start by saying that I simply devoured this book. Its romp through seamy Paris nightclubs; its exacting portrait of a passionate affair; and its exploration of both mileus with a deft mixture of immediacy and intellectual detachment had me absolutely obsessed with it — I just had to know what was happening next."? — Miriam Bridenne, Albertine Books, "4 French Women Writers To Discover This Summer!"

"A powerfully compelling narrative." —Tobias Carroll, Vol. 1 Brooklyn, "A Year of Favorites"

"Centering her tale on the love and lust of a young couple in the Parisian underworld allows Garrta to train our eyes on the physical beauty of youth, the sensuality of anonymous bodies, and our preconceptions regarding both. The bodies of je and A***, left bare of gender markers, create the need for a new, more vigilant kind of reading that involves a constant undoing of assumptions. They cry: Read yourselves, not just us." —Jane Yong Kim, Words Without Borders

""However, the fragments that do surface from this unconscious reservoir are vividly and eloquently incarnated. This is particularly true of the prose around lights, music, and bodies—the primary elements that compose nightclubs. They are rendered in rapturous tones . . . I could go on—exquisite fragments like these are packaged in nearly every page." —John Taylor, The Rumpus

"Garrta’s removal of gendered grammar is less an indictment of gender—or sign-bearing bodies—and more of a narrative challenge, a queering of language. This is also to say Sphinx is less of a queer romance novel than it is a poetic queering of love itself." — Meghan Lamb, The Collagist

One of the Dallas Observer's "13 Books to Read this Summer"

The Paris Review Staff Pick by Charlotte Groult

"The body may be divine, but it can only be seen in such close focus that individual limbs can hardly be distinguished: we are left with flesh and bone, plus a few spinning hormones." —Joanna Walsh, The National

"I must start by saying that I simply devoured this book. Its romp through seamy Paris nightclubs; its exacting portrait of a passionate affair; and its exploration of both mileus with a deft mixture of immediacy and intellectual detachment had me absolutely obsessed with it — I just had to know what was happening next." — Tom Roberge, Albertine Books Staff Pick

"Spectacular." —Aaron Westerman, Typographical Era (5-star review)

"Quite remarkable, and a rewarding piece of experimental—in the best senses of the word—fiction." —Michael Orthofer, Complete Review

"We search for signs from our lovers. We search for signs from those of us who we would like to be our lovers. The media, the market all of those things they tell us which signs belong with whom. Sphinx subverts all of this, offering the reader signs that can be aligned to anyone of any gender. But the book does something beyond this game of language and gender. Garrta is asking her readers to change their perception of a tale of lovers. This is no small task and elevates her Oulipo trickery beyond linguistic change and into the realm social change as well." —Allison Grimaldi-Donahue, Queen Mob's Teahouse

"Masterful...an extremely ambitious experiment pushing the boundaries of language." — Sarah Coolidge, Zyzzyva

"Garrta’s stylistic experiment has been carried out at once boldly and discreetly — it is difficult not to be lured into the story . . . [Emma Ramadan] has skillfully brought this thought-provoking novel to the English-reading world, where it has long been overdue." — John Taylor, The Arts Fuse

"Untethered from the genre you’ve unconsciously assigned it, the story expands. Love, like the universe has a way of doing that. And yet you sense a helplessness in the narrator to try, like you were, to pin something down." —Leah Dieterich, The Art Book Review

"The reader is both forced and free to provide what the author has pointedly left out of the text. Even if a reader is aware of the book's constraint, moving his or her or their eyes across the page at a sufficient speed, the reader begins to add the pronouns Ramadan was so careful to exorcise. Which ones in particular will vary: the book is a Rorschach test for each reader's assumptions about gender and the writing of gender. These assumptions are as likely to be conditioned by clues within the text as by the knowledge of paratextual facts about it." — Ryan Ruby, 3 Quarks Daily

No Genders Required
By Tony's Reading List
'Sphinx' is a simply wonderful book, a mesmerising look into the underworld of emotion and relationships - the fact that the writer has forced herself to hide the genders of the two main protagonists is a mere bonus. As the story develops, the two lovers are forced to grapple with their differences, as is the reader. It's tempting to play detective and look for hints of gender-defining behaviour, but after a while you're simply swept along by the story and the writing. Don't forget that translator Emma Ramadan was just as bound by the central premise, if in a different way, and her work here should not be underestimated. Love beyond definition
By Audrey Schoeman
I didn’t go into reading Anne Gartta’s first novel, Sphinx with low expectations. Everything I had read about it online pointed towards this being an exceptional book, so it wasn’t a surprise when the language on the very first page of the book had me hooked.

“Languid nights at the whim of syncopated rhythms and fleeting pulses; the road to hell was lit with pale lanterns; the bottom of the abyss drew closer indefinitely; I moved through the smooth insides of a whirlwind and gazed at deformed images of ecstatic bodies in the slow, hoarse death rattle of tortured flesh.”

Told through the prism of faded memory, we are drawn into the world of a nameless narrator; at the beginning of the story a student of theology, ostracized by the dogmatic opinions of the other students and attracted to the rhythms of the Parisian underworld; to nightclubs and cabarets and a life that takes place entirely at night. In this world our narrator meets and falls in love with A***, an exotic dancer, and the novel unfolds as the story of their unlikely but passionate and troubled romance.

Before encountering this novel I had never heard of OuLiPo, a French group of writers who write within self-imposed constraints. Anne Gartta was not a member of the group at the time of this (her first) novel’s first publication in 1986, but she is now, and as I understand it this one would have met the standards. As Daniel Becker says in his introduction, if you don’t know what the constraint she imposed is, then do everything in your power to keep it that way until you have a chance to read the book, and see how long it takes you to work it out. By that I mean close this window right now and do not finish reading my review; nor should you go on to read the excellent reviews on roughghosts, Tony’s Reading List, or Mookse and Gripes. Read them afterwards, before you revisit the book (because you will).

I couldn’t convince you? Or you’ve already read it. Well, if you haven’t, it’s on you.

The defining feature of Gartta’s brilliant novel (and the translator’s note at the end makes it clear just how much of the substance and form or the book it impacts) is this: our two main characters, the lovers, remain genderless throughout. Their sexuality is fluid, undefined, there for you to project your own assumptions onto, and then to return and question those assumptions, amend them, attempt to look past them. In this way ultimately the novel turns on you, becoming a mirror for your understanding of the world. You can read it as you see fit and my understanding certainly shifted throughout. I was amazed at just how difficult it truly was not to decide on fixed gender identities; how I needed to categorise the characters in order to imagine them.

“Crotches crossed and sexes mixed, I no longer knew how to distinguish anything.”

Did I say it was the defining feature? It is, but in a subtler way than might be imagined. Writing without gender has of necessity shaped the language Gartta has used, and the miracle of the book is how that is woven back into the story, building the necessarily high-faluting language (she was forced to use the pass simple, a written-only tense which has no equivalent in English but which would normally suggest a level of literary pretension) into the character of the narrator. A*** is described largely as an object of beauty; a mirror rather than a well-rounded person, and while this grows again from linguistic constraints, it becomes an integral part of their relationship.

“I was the shadow of a body that ignored me; I was also the source of the light that produced that shadow. All that came back to me was a projection of myself. A*** was merely a parasite interposed between my consciousness and my unfailing tendency to diffract the real.”

From the very beginning A***, wary of the budding relationship, is concerned about being viewed as a cipher or a mirror, reflecting back beauty without ever being truly known. And in many ways this comes to pass, although whose fault it is would be hard to identify. The relationship is a highly physical one, as our narrator has renounced the world of the intellect for one of physical gratification, maintaining a distance from the world.

The emotional remove from events; the first person narration; and the filter of memory overlaid on the story at first reminded me of that other narrator of Paris, Patrick Modiano, but the book quickly grew beyond that. The sense of ennui experienced here by the narrator and the level of introspection are entirely Gartta’s own.

I loved the book; it was a fully immersive reading experience. There were things about it which I didn’t always love; the distancing from events which at first was part of the appeal became wearying by the end, and the narrator’s outlook on life was increasingly frustrating. How could anyone not feel frustrated with a narrator who tells us:

‘”My aptitude for suffering astonished me in that moment. I was suffering as no one suffers anymore in this century; my sensibility was outmoded in the extreme. Had I ever been capable of loving without suffering?”

What became apparent while I was reading the translator’s note (and Emma Ramadan deserves a shout out here for an amazing translation) was that all of these elements were a requirements of the constraint; that Gartta had had to shape her character and plot around this missing identity. It is a remarkable achievement and more remarkable for being a straight up great book at the same time.

The advertising misleads, but still a great novella
By echoe
The blurb on the title and, indeed, what likely drives you to the book, was ... not entirely accurate in my reading. That's not the main thrust of the book from what I read, and indeed as soon as I got a bit through it I started imagining genders for the two main characters in the love story, who aren't directly talked about with gender but who do hit two fairly common gender stereotypes.
Also, this book is not a full novel. I brought it on a flight hoping to read through it all on the trip there, and finished in an hour. I ended up playing a cellphone game.
But Sphinx is definitely worth reading. There is a twist in the middle - it is disappointing in some ways - mainly because of how it hews to an overall convention in society in general, one I can't directly name if I want to avoid spoilers (and do I!) - but while I was reading it, I was spellbound.
I don't know if I would say the characters are 100% developed, but I don't think that's the point. This novel made me feel things I definitely didn't expect, and the sentences are beautiful - I imagine that they don't translate over perfectly from the french but they give what I would imagine is the same feeling, a sort of weighted stasis and ennui that permeates the covers like a wave. It isn't even, really, the sentences, but it's how the sentences and their languid ... stuffed-ness? ... complements the book as a whole, where everything within it feels like it's set to burst.

I really liked this book. I do wish it was what I had expected when I picked it up, but what I got in its place was fantastic anyways, so I can't complain too much. :)

3 1/2*'s But Have Patience, And Kleenex Handy!
By Kristi Ahlers
I normally love Sharon Sala but this book although full of emotion was perhaps to full if you get my meaning.
Billie and Matt have a chance meeting on one stormy New Years Eve and shared a kiss that was one for the record books. Matt walks away from her and does not look back but they both remember that snowy night at the airport. Although they exchange kisses they don't exchange names.
Two years later Billie comes home with Scott (Matt's son)for a visit. She is shocked by seeing the one man she has not been able to forget. Matt is equally stunned and makes a promise to himself that if there is nothing between his son and this girl he will do whatever it takes to keep her this time. Of course this is not what happens and just when you think Billie is going to allow herself a happy ending something else happens. In the end Billie leaves and goes home to her dad. This is a second part of the story and does explain how and why Billie acts the way she does. See her dad has been emotionally abusing her for years. She does not know how to trust. Oh yes, she crys a lot.
One thing leads to another and Matt and Billie have a third shot at happiness but of course Billie is her worst own enemy agian but fear not the story does end with a happy ending.
This book is full of emotions but happiness is rare and I must agree with the views of another reviewer I don't highly that there are men out there like Matt and Scott. These guys are more then story book hero's. A couple of times the book dragged but eventually got back on track. Have patience when reading and make sure to have Kleenex handy since tears are almost a guarantee.

He wears a mask - he pretends to be an idling, strolling observer of others: an amused spectator. He watches people on the street, in shops, in cafes: wherever he finds them he notes their peculiarities and imagines their lives. Like a naturalist with a bone of an unknown creature, he extrapolates and forms an entire animal in his mind's eye. It is his joy; it is his defence: he revels in life, so as to ignore death. For its shadow lies over him.

How should the Word of God be interpreted and applied today? Does our modern culture affect how we read the Bible? Can certain passages be interpreted in different contexts and in different ways, all the while acknowledging that God speaks with a clear and consistent voice? These are the enduring challenges of hermeneutics. In this volume, no less than sixteen Reformed scholars from four different countries join together to tackle the hard questions that often arise when we busy ourselves with the weighty responsibility of interpreting Holy Scripture. As iron sharpens iron, so also these Reformed scholars challenge each other and their readers to ask not only how hermeneutics can be done, but ultimately, how it should be done so that God's Word of Truth may be handled correctly (2 Tim 2:15).

Review
''Brothers in one faith discuss the implications of their confidence in the authority of Scripture. Honestly facing minor disagreements, they share the faith in God who has spoken. Sola scriptura remains the vital standard for today because it witnesses God's acts in history and reveals God in Christ. Participating in Him we find all treasures of wisdom and knowledge. Therefore we can only handle the word of God correctly, if we let the Word correct and handle us.''

I love Amy and the work she does. But this book, this one right here. It is by far my favorite.

If you're like me and can read a good book in one sitting than I have a challenge for you. because this will be a challenge. Take your time reading this one. let every word seep into your soul. Enjoy every word written. Because this story with make you feel many things and thats exactly what books should do.
You will thank me.

This isn't your normal Rocker Romance. Sebastian is definitely sexy and there's some hot sex scenes. But this is more. This is about love and family and acceptance. There are things in our lives we can not change, but they happen for a reason and can lead us to our Happy ending.

This book begins where the first left off. Pain and a struggle of emotion, to help you jump right back into Sebastian and Shea's story. Shea has secrets that Baz can't even imagine, but she keeps them from him because he is a fighter. He fights for the ones he loves and will do anything to make sure they are happy and safe. With Shea it's also fueled with passion and a need to protect like no other. Knowing this she keeps the darkest parts of her hidden. But what we find In Drowning to Breathe, is that Shea is not the only one with secrets. Secrets have a way of coming out and blowing up in your face. Oh and they do. But through all this pain there is so much love and forgiveness. They weren't even looking for each other, but they can't walk away now. Will their Love be enough to get through all the lies and pain?

"And I could feel it. Everything he was. Everything I wanted us to be. Standing right behind me."~Shea

"Where there is repentance, there is always room for mercy." ~DTB

"Sebastian crawled on the bed and situated himself between my thighs. He gathered my hands and pressed them into the bed over my head.
He stared down at me.
Falling.
Falling.
Falling. " ~Shea

A TIMELESS LOVE STORY THAT'S POWERFUL, EMOTIONAL, AND SINFULLY SEXY!
By Susan S
Drowning to Breathe is an intoxicating blend of sexy and sweet, served up with a side of intrigue. Intense and passionate, Sebastian and Shea’s love story is an unforgettable journey that’s guaranteed to captivate your heart. It’s powerful, emotional, and sinfully sexy! A perfectly “imperfect” love story that grabs ahold of your heart and refuses to let go.

With eagerness and excitement, I dove into “Drowning to Breathe” and devoured each and every word. Beautiful in its execution, the conclusion to Sebastian and Shea’s story was laid out perfectly. Satisfying the emotional impact I desperately craved, not once was I disappointed. From start to finish, there were moments that made me smile, moments that made me cry, and moments that made me swoon. There were surprises I rejoiced in and bittersweet scenes that broke my heart. Without a doubt, I fell fast and hard for Sebastian Stone, but the sweet and tender moments between him and Kallie had me falling just a little bit more.

Following the brutal, agonizing cliffhanger from “A Stone in the Sea,” I was left stunned and heartbroken. I wondered… where do Sebastian and Shea go from here? Could their love possibly survive? There were many issues that needed to be addressed--questions that required answers; situations that begged to be resolved. But despite the destructive turmoil that the lies and secrets had left in its wake, the emotional and physical intensity between Sebastian and Shea remained intact. Their love a constant, I sighed in relief and grinned with delight.

Back in all his villainous glory, Martin Jennings continues to make his presence known. His prevailing malice towards Shea and Sebastian is never far from mind. Set on vengeance and ready to strike, Martin lays in wait, lurking in the background. Now joined in a game of cat and mouse, their once separate lives have connected in an ironic twist of fate.

To offset the foreboding Martin Jennings, we have the unwavering loyalty of Anthony and the band members. I love their devotion to Sebastian and how readily they extended it to Shea and Kallie. The ease with which they welcomed Baz’s “girls” into their lives was nothing less than heartwarming. Who knew that these hard-core rock stars could be so firecely protective and yet so sweet?

And then there’s Austin… the broken boy that Sebastian is desperate to fix; the brother he’d do anything for in order to protect. My heart bleeds for Austin as he continues to be haunted by the ghosts of his past. Without drugs to bury the guilt and fear, some of Austin’s demons slowly become unmasked. But despite new insight into Austin’s pain, there is still much to be learned and a great deal of healing that’s yet to take place.

“Drowning to Breathe” is a fated love story woven within an intricate web of heinous deeds, treachery and deceit. Nervous anticipation kept me on edge, as I hoped for the best while fearing the worst. As the story unfolds, hidden truths come to light, culminating in a surprising revelation. With past atrocities finally exposed, Sebastian and Shea’s future becomes less certain. Suddenly, they’re free falling without a net. Still, I held out hope that a “happily ever after” remained within their grasp.

With artistic elegance, AL Jackson delivers an enthralling love story laced with passion and suspense. It’s alluring, sensual, soulful and poetic. Powerfully gripping and emotionally consuming, “Drowning to Breathe” is everything you crave in a romance novel and more. It’s a timeless love story you won’t soon forget!

5 Stars!
By Paige
5 "Perfect Ending" Stars

I fell in love with A.L Jackson when I read The Regret Series. After that I read everything I could get my hands on. When I read A Stone in the Sea, the first book in the Bleeding Stars series, I was blown away. Her writing gets better and better with each book. When that book left off with the cliffhanger to beat all cliffhangers, I was waiting (impatiently) for book 2. After getting the chance to read Drowning to Breathe early, I took it and was awed at how Shea and Baz overcame all the potholes their very public lives left in front of them. With lyrical prose that grabbed my heart and never let go, Shea and Baz and little Kallie, finally got all the good things they deserved.

Picking up right where A Stone in the Sea ended, Baz is left reeling from the information that his arch nemesis is actually the very-not-dead father to Kallie. After bearing his soul to Shea, he's devastated to learn that Shea wasn't doing the same for him. At first he isn't sure how to deal with his world being turned up side down and is determined that he will not be the catalyst for more problems for Shea and Kallie. At first he thinks that the right thing to do is to extricate himself from their lives, but from the help of his bandmates and his brother, he realizes that the only path that makes sense is for him to fight right alongside Shea. Together they are determined to rip their happily ever after out from under Martin and do it as a team.

I loved that this book showed two people working together without lies and secrets pulling them apart. They learned from their mistakes and didn't let anyone stand in their way. Of course there was suspense and tension while they waited to see if Kallie was going to be able to come home and afterwords while they waited for Martin to make his next move, but they didn't let that come between them. They were a unified front without unnecessary angst and drama. Watching them together was beautiful even during the most tragic of circumstances.

The way the story came together showed that Baz and Shea had ties that bound them together before they even knew each other. Showing real love and devotion was a beautiful thing and Shea and Baz are the epitome of beautiful together. This brilliant story was the perfect conclusion to their story but opened the door for more from Baz's bandmates and from his brother. I'm excited to see where their stories take them and to get glimpses of the future that Baz and Shea worked so hard for.

The Rough-Face Girl, by Rafe Martin

From Algonquin Indian folklore comes one of the most haunting, powerful versions of the Cinderella tale ever told.

In a village by the shores of Lake Ontario lived an invisible being. All the young women wanted to marry him because he was rich, powerful, and supposedly very handsom. But to marry the invisible being the women had to prove to his sister that they hadseenhim. And none had been able to get past the sister's stern, all-knowing gaze.

Then came the Rough-Face girl, scarred from working by the fire. Could she succeed where her beautiful, cruel sisters had failed?

From Publishers Weekly
In this Algonquin Indian version of the Cinderella story, two domineering sisters set out to marry the "rich, powerful, and supposedly handsome" Invisible Being, first having to prove that they can see him. They cannot, but their mistreated younger sister the Rough-Face Girl--so called because the sparks from the fire have scarred her skin--can, for she sees his "sweet yet awesome face" all around her. He then appears to her, reveals her true hidden beauty and marries her. Shannon ( How Many Spots Does a Leopard Have? ) paints powerful, stylized figures and stirring landscapes, heightening their impact with varied use of mist, shadows and darkness. His meticulous research is evident in intricate details of native dress and lodging. In places, though, he struggles with the paradox of illustrating the invisible--an eagle, tree, cloud and rainbow form the face of the Invisible Being in one disappointingly banal image. For the most part, however, the drama of these haunting illustrations--and of Martin's ( Foolish Rabbit's Big Mistake ) respectful retelling--produce an affecting work. Ages 4-8.

Grade 3 Up-- Simply, in the words of an oral storyteller, Martin retells an Algonquin folktale. The youngest of three sisters is forced by the other two to sit by the fire and feed the flames, which results in the burning and scarring of her hair and skin. Desirous of marriage to an Invisible Being who lives in a huge wigwam across the village, these cruel siblings must prove to his sister that they have seen him, but they fail. The Rough-Face Girl, however, sees the Invisible Being everywhere and can answer his sister's questions correctly. Comparable in presentation to Caroline Cunningham's ``The Little Scarred One'' from The Talking Stone (Knopf, 1939; o.p.; reprinted in Castles and Dragons , Crowell, 1958; o.p.), but different in detail, this is a splendid read-aloud. It is the only single illustrated version available. Shannon's finely crafted full- and double-page acrylic paintings in the rich hues of the earth embody the full flavor of the story. His stunning cover portrait shows at one glance both the girl's beauty and her frightful scars. Another in the recent succession of Cinderella stories, The Rough-Face Girl begs for comparison with Princess Furball (Greenwillow, 1989), Tattercoats (Putnam, 1989), Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters (Lothrop, 1987), Moss Gown (Clarion, 1987), etc., and will provide both entertainment and a cultural lesson.

From Kirkus Reviews
An Algonquin Cinderella story, with accomplished but sometimes overliteral illustrations. A powerful invisible being will marry the woman who can prove that she's seen him; a poor man's two proud daughters try and fail, but the third, her face and hands scarred from tending the fire, has the understanding to see him everywhere in the world and is lovingly received. Martin's retelling is spare and understated, but never dry; the two sisters are richly comic figures, the climax and ending uncontrived yet magically romantic. Shannon (who illustrated Lester's How Many Spots Does a Leopard Have?) expertly picks up the flavor--the sisters positively strut through the village, their noses high and one wearing what looks like a spangled angora sweater--but the lips the Rough-Faced Girl sees hanging in the sky, or the muscular, art-deco cloud figure, seem intrusions rather than integral parts of the natural world. Still, a strong, distinctive tale with art to match. (Folklore/Picture book. 8+) -- Copyright 1992, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.
