This book has caused me great suffering.
By A Customer
I am a sophomore in highschool taking an AP class with this book. It has a lot of information, which I guess is a good thing if you are reading this for your own personal gain rather than being tested on it. However, it is so dense that it is difficult to pick up key ideas. Every piece of information is important on some level, and the tests I take, which my teacher got along with this book, also treat every fact as important. I wouldn't mind reading this book if I wasn't expected to have a photographic memory but it just doesn't do a good job of helping me understand key ideas in history. Well, if you have to read this in your history class I hope you have a good teacher to guide you along in the reading. Otherwise.... I hope your memory is better than mine!!

The earth and its people: a global history
By A Customer
Excellent book for senior high school-college-undergraduate studies, covering the broad field of world history. The text is structured in such a manner as to suit both brief studies of various areas and times, as well as more in depth, long term programs. A fascinating assortment of primary source excerpts have been included, from earliest human societies to issues facing humanity in the contemporary period. Though the text has a slight Western emphasis, it covers non-Western civilisations quite well.
Be prepared though for extensive reading. The complete set is very large, but shouldn't be an obstacle for those with a passion for both general and obscure history!

Transience is an exploration into Estelle Asmodelle's neo-abstract expressionism and a journey into perception of form and structure through abstraction. Transience resists discrete interruption but facilitates the observer with interplay between conscious and sub-conscious interpretation of primal symbolism.

Transience - a delightful journey into real abstraction
By Jazzy
I bought this book, because the artist is also a music artist and I discovered her music and love it very much. I was really surprised to learn that she is also a well know painter as well. Estelle is Australian and paints abstract expressionism works.

I was totally amazed at the diversity of her art work in this book "Transience," it is so unique and individual - reminds me of Jackson Pollack, but with more emotion and vibrancy - she seems to transcend the abstract in a strange way and has created what I would call a personal reflection. The works ring of authenticity and begged to be interpreted - while much abstract artist's work remain enigmatic - Estelle's painting yearn to be translated in a very person way. I have different feelings and ideas of what each piece is about, and after reading the introduction where Estelle explains what she means by `Transience,' I get the idea that is just what the artist wants to do - she is not on about some grand metaphor or symbolisms that make wide sweeping social comments, but rather her work is a personal art form and one that is made for the viewer, in a real sense, in their world.

I would like to frame some of the pages in the book - as each page is full of photos of her art work, there is no story telling or long involved dissertations of what `Art' is - there is a 1 page intro at the front and then the rest of the book is simply page after page of beautiful, colourful and often magical art! What a wonderful pictorial resume this little book is.

I've since learned that Estelle exhibits in Australia and Japan; so one day I'd like to attend such an event and see these paintings in person, which have touched me in such a person way. At the back of the book, it has the dimensions of each painting and I was surprised to learn that many are very large and can take up a whole wall, yet each painting is full of such intricate detail. Most of the art works are seemingly painted in almost an accidental manner, but when you look closer it soon becomes evident that is there so much more going on that it is difficult to see how such an accident could have happened.

I love this book and return to it when I'm in a reflective mood - the only downside for me is that it's a soft-cover - I would love a hard-cover version of this wonderful journey into `myself,' for that what this book offers, a glimpse of who you really are and how you feel about things you see and try to understand - it is a remarkably simple yet extraordinary collections of visual oddities.

It is more than a coffee table book, yet it's also one that you would like to share with others. The pages are matt and resounding in full vibrant colour and are print quality and worthy of framing.

A collections of Art Works
By Estelle Asmodelle
Just a note rather than a review - that this book contains 78 full colour pages of hi-res digital reproductions of art works and any of them could be framed and hung on the wall. In a sense it is a book and also a small library of limited collection prints

However, the business providing this book was a life saver. I borrowed this book, that was cherished by that person, and I spilled stuff on it. Surprisingly, I found an exact (perfect)copy; when I received the book, it was as the distributor said immaculate! But, for the book itself, I can't be of any help.

Not for emotional wimps
By jmh
Simply put, this is not the kind of novel one takes lightly. It is a thought provoking, dark, and meaty book that causes the reader to feel and live the desperation of the characters portrayed. The book was written after WWll, and the aftermath of one man's self-medication of a war injury with the morphine (heroin) drug. Looped into the mix is a very complicated marriage based on guilt, her lost hopes and dreams, those that worship the weak, and the weak that worship no one. It is a novel, I think better read several times, for the first time is as if you are numbed by the bleakness of it all, the heaviness and the heartbreak.
This is no novel for emotional wimps.

Beautiful, dark, and unnerving.
By M. Mazza
The dimensional misery in which the novel's characters find themselves is poetically narrated. Since the novel was published in the late 40's, it belongs to an era where readers were patient enough to relish lengthy but poignant description. It's an alluring read that can prove rewarding to all those who ponder its painful subtleties. The characters' hopelessness may seem unbearable at times, but ironically, it is rendered in such beautiful prose that it easily illicits compassion and understanding from the reader. This alone makes it quite addictive. Frankie Machine and his cohorts (who never seem like cartoonish dregs, but actual people), embody what many would rather ignore: the reality of those who meet with constant disillusionment. The reader doesn't have to be from the "underbelly" of America to empathize with the book's main figures. In fact, Algren, through his melodic sentences of haunting sincerity, might even corrode the comfort of those who believe too strongly in the American Dream. Darkness and destitution have never exuded such truth and humanity.

I heard the title The Man with the Golden Arm long before I ever read the book or saw the movie. It's a beautiful, evocative title, but it also makes you think of something grotesque: a man with a shiny prosthetic. When I got older, and knew the story centered on a junkie, the connotation became even more disturbing: an arm jaundiced by the hypo. I was never much into addiction stories and Algren's book (purchased as a shiny new softcover back in the early 80s, when I was spending the greater part of my college loan money on the creation of a private library) sat on my shelf for more than 20 years.

It turns out that the book is quite a good read. Algren locates the source of dealer Frankie Machine's addiction in his WW2 service-he was wounded and got hooked on the morphine that eased the pain of his injury. The novel also makes clear, though, that in spite of his friends' admiration and awe of his Purple Heart, Frankie was no hero. A grunt's grunt, he remained three years a private.

While the novel tells the story of Frankie's several attempts to kick the stuff, what we get out of it is the tale of a loser in a community of losers, people the American dream has left behind: small-time swindlers, dwellers in fleabag tenements, drunks, and sweet girls who can't get a break Among the sad detritus of this universe, located around Chicago's West Division Street, Frankie Machine shines like a star, with his big talk and his talent (the "golden arm" refers to his sure skill dealing cards, which he hopes to transfer to playing the drums in a big band).

Still, his life spirals downward. And although the drugs are central, you can't help feeling that if it weren't morphine that did Frankie in, it would have been something else. At bottom, he doesn't believe he's worth saving; one of the achievements of the novel is that you end up feeling they're all worth saving, not just Frankie, but also his grimier fellows. Algren draws his characters with such vividness that he takes you beyond pity and amusement to pure empathy with their humanity.

Lords of Arcadia: Act One

Kane Vess may be gay, but he is also extraordinarily ordinary—a crushing weight in Athens, Iowa, where a person’s worth is measured by his uniqueness. But when he meets the school’s newest student, Kane’s ordinariness seems to evaporate. He is desperate to get to know the mysterious stranger… and that leads him into danger.

Hawk is an exile from his homeland, an otherworldly traveler with impossible abilities and a changeling bodyguard. He’s generally disappointed in Earth, which seems common except for Kane. But while Hawk and Kane explore their mutual interest, the forces that made Hawk an exile are busy tracking him down. Kane’s newfound feelings pull him into Hawk’s shadowy fantasy world, where he learns he needs to grow up fast. Kane’s life may now be extraordinary, but if he isn’t careful it could cost him everyone he holds dear—including Hawk.

Mind blowing, collision of realms/worlds tale.
By M LaDair
Average town, average people, average life and then all hell brakes loose.
Figuratively speaking, opening Pandora's box has never been so delicious. While you are clutching tightly to the box your feet are sinking down through the quicksand. Absolutely no time to gather your thoughts.
Ever wondered what happened after Shakespeare's "Midsummer Night's Dream"? I did. The end of Chapter Nine sent my brain into overdrive, complete with saucer-size eyes.
There are so many pieces of the puzzle that scattered through the book that I'll be sure returning back to again and again. I keep wondering how the big picture will look like once I get them all in the right order.
Never underestimate the fantasy genre, there are lots of references of places and names, little details that cannot be seen by the naked eye but play the important role in the dramatic revelations. Don't try to figure them out all at once, but keep track of them, it'll fall into the right place when the time is perfect.
I don't want to give away the plot and ruin the surprise but I have to tell you that combined with fantasy and history and mythology and fairy tales and irony/sarcasm of the modern day life - you'll never look at the reality the same way ever again.
It's a cliffhanger ending. You are unmistakably falling down a rabbit hole and the thrill is overwhelming. And there ain't no parachute that they can make for this...
It's an m/m world's fairy tale, tentative and gentle romantic touch of a Young Adult fiction.
Oh, God. I need the next book right about NOW. I highly recommend it.
Five stars, no doubt about it.

Impossible to Put Down!
By Jamie Deacon
Having enjoyed Goode's Foster High novels, which are firmly grounded in reality, I was intrigued as to how he would tackle something more fantastical. Much as I suspected, he pulls it off brilliantly. This first installment in the Lords of Arcadia series has two boys from utterly different worlds exploring an unlikely but powerful attraction, while danger closes in on them from all sides. Magic, intense emotion, and fast-pace action have been brought together to create a book I found to be both original and compulsive reading.

Kane Vess might be gay, but in Athens, Iowa, where popularity is dictated by a person's outlandishness, he is thought dull. One day at school, however, his ordinary existence is shattered when he almost collides with the new boy in the corridor. Captivated by the stranger's extraordinary beauty, Kane is anxious to learn more of him. The revelation that Hawk is an exile from another realm turns out to be just the beginning. Kane hasn't spent long in his company before he makes two discoveries. For one thing, they share an immediate affinity that defies understanding. For another, hanging around with Hawk could cost Kane his life.

Fleeing those who would either use or kill him for his royal status, Hawk seeks refuge on Earth with his changeling bodyguard. He has a low opinion of his new home, considering it both mundane and incomprehensible...that is, until he meets Kane. It doesn't matter that Kane is a human with no special powers, or that he is a commoner far beneath his own station. Hawk is instantly drawn to him in a way he can't ignore. But as they take the first tentative steps towards building a relationship, the forces that drove Hawk from his homeland are catching up with him, and even Hawk's enhanced abilities might not be enough to save them.

I have to say, what really brought this book to life for me was the humor. The miscommunication between the heroes as they struggle to decipher one another's languages, often with hilarious results, had me laughing out loud throughout. Yet, despite the vast differences in their culture and upbringing, the spark that leaps between the two boys from the outset is undeniable, and it was a pleasure to watch it grow. Moreover, this novel ends on a cliffhanger that will surely leave any reader desperate to know what happens next.

If you're looking for a young adult fantasy that combines action with plenty of humor and romance, I can highly recommend this book.

Phenomenal Story!
By sammy2006
I have begun this review 4 times. Each time I tried to think of a clever way to pull together all of the elements that made this book shine. In one, I began to tell you of a talking cat (think changeling), or better yet a talking ruby--and please don't make the mistake of offending him by calling him a diamond. I began to tell you how this cat--well this changeling, for cat was only one of its many forms, was the bodyguard of the Prince. But more than that, he was in love with him...however, the love was a jealous and twisted love, much like the true form of this changeling itself. Then there was the ruby, also a Prince in his own right, but given to the elves. He was an elemental--taking the form of a gem and his ofttimes sarcastic responses gave this reader more than a few laughs along the way. But then I thought, no...they were phenomenal secondary characters but not really main characters.

So, I scratched that and went in for the world building aspect. This time I waxed prosaic on the small town of Athens, Iowa, the original hippie kingdom where shops have insanely funny names like "Donde Esta da Bean" (the local coffee shop) and spoke of its inhabitants who all loved and accepted one another, even those who dared to be different--cause there in Athens, different is the norm. I wanted to express to you how a piece of me desired to visit there, sit in the shops, get to know the people. Mr. Goode had drawn them in such a way as to make them funny and appealing and sweet all at the same time. But the town...no, the town was not the real story here, either. So, I sighed heavily, hit the delete button and started again.

This time I attacked the aspect of the new fantasy world that we are introduced to in Distant Rumblings. Arcadia. Even its name sounded regal, ancient! It's inhabitants were elves and other amazing creatures. But there was trouble in this paradise of beautiful faerie folk, and Prince Hawk had been exiled in order to save him from the "dark". We come to find out that the "dark" included those elves who had rebelled against the current monarchy and that they were sinister and deadly. I tried my best to relate how they fit into this incredible story without giving away too much information..without revealing any of the amazing cliffhanger that ended this novel and had me wanting to hurl my kindle across the room and storm over to the author's home demanding the sequel right then and there. However, I realized that while all that was compelling, it was still not the real focus of this story. So, back to the drawing board I went...

Finally, I settled for this...Distant Rumblings is a love story...a sweet teenage boy, son of a hippie flautist (flute player for laymen) and a deceased but gentle mother, falls in love with a Prince. A Prince who has much to learn about compassion for those he deems as being of lesser stature than himself (basically everyone) but a Prince who has a heart of gold...one that has begun beating for that teenage boy who lives in that quirky small town where being gay is not only accepted but respected.

There, I had finally stumbled upon what I felt this delightful story was about...love.

John Goode is a master at weaving all these elements into an extraordinarily enjoyable novel. The way he uses language to create an alternate world, a ruling class of elves, and the intriguing mind of a sweet teenage boy left me breathless and giddy at the same time. I wanted to be Kane's best friend, sit and exchange witty barbs with the Ruby Prince and send that changeling packing more than once. This is the beauty of a John Goode novel. He strolls into your everyday existence and invites you to take his hand and enter a world where the very characters leap off the page and wrap themselves around your heart. A true master storyteller. A highly entertaining novel. A unbearably sweet love story. Distant Rumblings...a 5 star read.
