A Jeff Galloway Convert
By Nancy D.
Last fall I decided that I would start checking things off my "Bucket List". I really had no idea that running a marathon was even on the list. At 55 years of age and 60 pounds overweight, perhaps this idea was lunacy. In any event, I bought some running shoes, dieted a bit and found a training program. As any sane person might imagine, I discovered some things.

1. Running was hard.
2. Running wasn't fun.
3. You can hurt yourself plodding down the road as an overweight, out of shape, "older" person.

In fact, I did ultimately hurt my left knee. I decided to take break and let things heal up. While on the break, I decided to check another item off my bucket list. I learned to surf on the North Shore on Oahu. What a trip that was. I also discovered Jeff Galloway's web site. After much thought and reading, I decided to purchase this book, along with the Gymboss interval timer and give Jeff Galloway's program a shot.

I must say, I have been happy with the run/walk/run method. Of course, I had to get over the mental aspect of walking when I was supposed to be running. However, I found that I actually was completing my runs in a faster time (Jeff notes this in this book) and I am injury free! I am following one of the several training programs he includes in the book. I have signed up for my first marathon (Honolulu 2014 in December) and am now really enjoying the training. So here is what I have now found using the Jeff Galloway method.

1. Running is hard but easier when you take a more sane approach (e.g. run/walk/run).
2. Running is fun and you feel better after running.
3. You can run as an overweight, out of shape, "older" person and not hurt yourself.

I know this may sound crazy, but give it a shot. You won't be disappointed.

Marathon: I DID Do It!
By Smith's Rock
At age 55, I felt as though I was running out of time to cross "Run a Marathon" off my lifetime list of things to do before leaving this planet. Galloway's book was the first book on training for a marathon that I happened upon, and it was a lucky find indeed.

I trained with my 24 year old son, who had never run a marathon. Neither of us particularly liked running, neither of us were in great shape. Galloway's sensible, step by step, interesting and informative book worked so well for us that we were both able to claim "First time is the charm". The book includes several training detailed running schedules based on speed, and one that is simply labeled "To Finish". We chose "To Finish", and signed up for the 2007 Portland Marathon.

Sticking with the nutritional and motivational advice provided in abundance by the book, we finished each training run with the conclusion "No WAY we can run any further than this". But we did, and as the weeks went by, the distances increased just as Galloway had promised. Injury free, we showed up in Portland, ran the entire race together, stepped on the finish line together, and experienced that incredible feeling of taking on a task that seems impossible, and succeeding.

The book is interesting, full of anecdotes, warm, and encouraging. Think you're too old or too slow to ever run a marathon? Pick up this book, and think again!

Boston Qualifyer and Conversion of Attitude
By Brian K Harris
I have been using this book and plan for after ten years now and while perusing Galloway's books to find a title for my therapist decided to finally chime in. From being a XC runner in high school and college, the mentality of never stopping during a race was commendable and a rite of passage. Before picking up this book I ran two marathons without stopping. I was 35 then but my back seemed like it was 65. After both those marathons, the "sensation" of a broomstick jamming into my backside was crippling (sciatic nerve). In the advice from a friend I tried the run/walk system. My next marathon brought a Park City time from 4:30 to 3:51 walking every mile. Granted I was pushing mile times, but the result was phenomenal. I now exclusively use the R/W program for training and racing. I have tried a run 4 min, walk 30 second, and a walk each mile marker with success in both. My PR is now a 3:27 which brought me to Boston this last April... so for the doubting speedsters, running fast by walking is possible. For those with back pain, I can't say enough.

Behavioral Programming: The Manipulation of Social Interaction, by Kelly Alwood

Behavioral Programming is organic psychology. It's an all-natural, green and healthy way to enter and code a person's brain for specific behaviors and responses. We look at our relationships with others as a complete ecosystem, and because Behavioral Programming works off of the two pillars, honesty and mutual benefit, this makes altering people's behavioral responses natural and easy. This system of psychoprogramming is so effective that you can use it via phone, text or email.

Behavioral Programming is the only influence/manipulation/programming system that can work completely through multimedia. With this system of psychology you can alter a person's behavior entirely through texting! No face to face is needed. No human contact is needed. No vocal exchange is needed for this system to work.

This powerful and thorough method comes from 6 years of research that started out as a program designed to enable US Special Operations personnel to acquire human assets and solicit help quickly behind enemy lines. Nothing out there has been taught like this. The human brain is a computer; learn how to hack it and you can program it to do anything. Learning the code is the key, and the code is Behavioral Programming.

I don't look at it like "mind manipulation"
By Tony J.
Very insightful book that everyone can get something from. You can get quite a lot of you are able to apply concepts to daily life and Kelly gives true insight into a craft that people are just starting to realize the importance to. The principles learned in this book can assist you in strengthening day to day work relationships to helping you away others into seeing a problem or the solution to a problem the same way you do. I don't look at it like "mind manipulation", I look at it as melding them to conforming to what YOU already know is the best solution to the problem based on the information you have at hand at a given time.
This book can give you the know how to better learn this craft through practice and principles from this book are used by special operations and pilots who are starting to learn this craft as part of their SERE training. By learning this skill and being able to communicate and apply these skills to the indigenous, an "operator" can talk them into helping them get away from hostile forces and back to friendlies if separated from there unit or die behind enemy lines. A crucial skill that not only could save one's life but can also be applied daily. Take advantage of this book and read it. It will open up subjects in your mind most people have never given a second though and could be the spark that lit the fire for a whole new field of study. It has done that for me.

By Michael DeShazo
I have known Kelly for year and I am still amazed with his ability to take a subject like social engineering and break it down so that the principles are easy to understand and apply. Social engineering can be thought of as the ability to effectively interact with another person or group to get them on your team. Kelly is a master at that. This book will give you the tools to master it as well. Kelly uses real world examples to illustrate how social engineering can be an effective tool in your toolbox. Read this if you want to be more effective in everything from everyday encounters to super secret ninja operations in a far away land.

A Must Read!!
By DJ
This is a definite must have book. Everyone who deals with people on a daily basis (everyone) can benefit greatly from this. If you are a business person or involved in sales, this information should be required reading. It is even a powerful tool for relationships and can make all the difference in the world in communication (a HUGE problem with relationships). It isn't about manipulation, but communication in a structured and purposeful way.
Most of the information I have heard throughout my life. However, it is organized in a great way and reminded me of the many techniques I have heard in the past, but haven't been using. Kinda like an organized guide. And there was also some information that I haven't thought about.
Definitely wouldn't hesitate to recommend this book and highly encourage my friends and family to read it. It is easily understood and written clearly with great examples throughout. Buy with confidence!
**Also, buy this for your teenage and young adult kids. They can learn a TON about communication that will help them throughout their lives. Kids today really need help in this area...

This was a nice introduction to OpenCV
By ctbcpf
This was a nice introduction to OpenCV, but be aware that it's only 56 pages. I especially liked the steganography examples. Also, the way the code is explained line-by-line was nice. The title of this book delivers exactly what's promised. It will get you out of the starting blocks when working with OpenCV. The version I read had an error or two in the source code, and the coding design and style isn't the best, but it works. I don't consider myself an expert in C++, but with a little help from StackOverflow, I was able to compile all the examples.

Instant Stopper
By Ms. One More Time
This book was useless for me. Why don't I read reviews before I purchase computer books!

Other reviewers did not try the installation directions for windows. I did.

Some of the links do not exist.
Many of the downloads are land mines - got to be real careful or you will install a bunch crap you did not want. I was not careful and one of the downloads created a new home page for me and installed two useless programs.

After lots of hours I don't have a useable OpenCV program writing capability. Some of the OpenCV paths that are to be used just don't exist in the version of OpenCV that I downloaded. Don't see anywhere I could have got them. OpenCV downloads don't seem to currently contain some of the stuff they may have in the past, so good luck with that part of the install.

Should have lit a match to a 10 dollar bill rather than buy this book. Would have been more fun and much faster. The book has killed my interest in writing a simple OpenCV program.

Disappointing Book.
By Tebow
This is a very small book that does not attempt to do much. The book consists of how to install OpenCV on Linux or Windows and then has 5 code snippets which illustrate basic functionality. If you don't think that is enough for you -- look elsewhere.

My issue with the book is that the linux installation instructions are incorrect, and the part of them that works is obviously stolen from a blog:

[...]
I don't know if the Windows part of the book is correct, but the linux information is a joke and the authors should be ashamed. I spend hours trying to figure out why their example code didn't build. Turns out the command they said would build the code is fundamentally incorrect.

Eschatology and the Technological Future (Routledge Studies in Religion), by Michael S. Burdett

The rapid advancement of technology has led to an explosion of speculative theories about what the future of humankind may look like. These "technological futurisms" have arisen from significant advances in the fields of nanotechnology, biotechnology and information technology and are drawing growing scrutiny from the philosophical and theological communities. This text seeks to contextualize the growing literature on the cultural, philosophical and religious implications of technological growth by considering technological futurisms such as transhumanism in the context of the long historical tradition of technological dreaming. Michael Burdett traces the latent religious sources of our contemporary technological imagination by looking at visionary approaches to technology and the future in seminal technological utopias and science fiction and draws on past theological responses to the technological future with Pierre Teilhard de Chardin and Jacques Ellul. Burdett’s argument arrives at a contemporary Christian response to transhumanism based around the themes of possibility and promise by turning to the works of Richard Kearney, Eberhard Jngel and Jrgen Moltmann. Throughout, the author highlights points of correspondence and divergence between technological futurisms and the Judeo-Christian understanding of the future.

Review
"The author offers a remarkable interaction between technological and theological views of the future. Providing a readable and expert guide through the maze of utopianism, futurism, transhumanism and science fiction, he also draws skilfully on major theologians and philosophers to craft something much more original and exciting than a survey. In this book which should be required reading for all futurologists, he contrasts Christian hope convincingly with the limited possibilities promised by technology, while remaining appreciative of the contribution made by technology to the human community." - Paul Fiddes, Professor of Systematic Theology, University of Oxford, UK

"An important, illuminating and timely engagement with one of the great intellectual and cultural issues of our time." - Alister E. McGrath, Andreas Idreos Professor of Science and Religion,University of Oxford, UK

"Amongst the growing literature addressing the debate around transhumanism, Michael Burdett's work makes a unique contribution, and in several ways. Firstly, he contextualizes contemporary discussions in a long history of scientific and fictional utopias. Secondly, he offers a comprehensive account of the major theological responses to technological utopianism. And, thirdly, he brings into play an account of theological hope that moves the whole discussion onto a new level. Clearly written and cogently argued, this new book merits the attention of students from a wide spectrum of theological and philosophical disciplines."- George Pattison, 1640 Chair of Divinity, University of Glasgow, UK

"Is there any significant difference between a machine and a human being?"
By Carl
A conversation between Christian theology and transhumanism that sheds light on the broader ways that imagining a technological future relies on a rich history of religious dreams about the days ahead, and even the end of days. There's plenty to go on here, in terms of the historical scope of the argument, the huge number of ideas, sources, and lines of thought that are pulled together, and in the substantive engagement with pressing questions and contemporary movements that are actively shaping the lives we live. With a variety of Christian groups on one side, futurists of various stripes on the other, and a growing number of technologies all around (and even inside) us, we are in just the position to find Burdett's study not just interesting or insightful (though it's both), but really truly useful in navigating our world.

As a literature type, I spent the most time in the chapter on science fiction, sifting the ideas about the importance of myths for grounding action. The argument here is really helpful in positioning science fiction as the genre in which we celebrate science and technology, but also as an expression of our suspicions as well as our hopes. Various subgenres and modes within science fiction allow for a variety of engagements with technology. Burdett focuses on issues of affect: the strange wonder of the differences between a science fictional world and ours that create a sense of awe in the audience, an awe that often centers around an encounter with technologies that delight and dazzle us with their power, the "technological sublime."

The turn in the final third of the book toward the divide in values (and corresponding ethical imperatives) between a robust Christian eschatology and a transhumanist vision for the future is the strongest aspect of the overall argument. While there's no alarmist finger wagging here, this is not a book of navel-gazing platitudes but a call to action. The argument closes with an appeal to envision the future in a way that values the present rather than simply rushing past it toward the specter of a future state.

Full-bodied footnotes add a lot of interesting commentary on the various sources quoted, and give a richness to the readings of the various texts. The body of the argument is streamlined, but there is plenty here for anyone who wants to chase down one point or another at greater length.

Quantum Leaps, by Jeremy Bernstein

In 1953, reflecting on early ventures in quantum theory, J. Robert Oppenheimer spoke of terror and exaltation, of history happening in a realm so remote from common experience that it was “unlikely to be known to any poet or historian.” Yet now, anyone can Google “quantum theory” and find more than 34 million entries—from poets and historians, certainly, as well as film critics and Buddhist monks. How—and how pervasively—quantum mechanics has entered the general culture is the subject of this book, an engaging, eclectic, and thought-provoking look at the curious, boundlessly fertile intersection of scientific thought and everyday life.

Including recollections of encounters with the theory and the people responsible for it, Jeremy Bernstein’s account ranges from the cross-pollination of quantum mechanics with Marxist ideology and Christian and Buddhist mysticism to its influence on theater, film, and fiction. Along the way, Bernstein focuses on those—such as Niels Bohr, the Dalai Lama, W. H. Auden, and Tom Stoppard—who have made quantum physics; who have argued over it, pondered it, or taken literary inspiration from it, and who have misunderstood, misconstrued, or misapplied it. One person in particular supplies a narrative thread: John Bell, a notable yet underappreciated physicist who did groundbreaking research in quantum physics. In Bell’s story, Bernstein provides a uniquely readable account of what physicists call the “measurement problem.”

Quantum Leaps is a lively, erudite book on a subject that Bernstein has lived with for most of its history. His experience and deep understanding are apparent on every page.

From Publishers Weekly
Bernstein, a former New Yorker staff writer and prolific popular-science author (Plutonium), embarks on an almost quixotic attempt to explain the mysteries of quantum mechanics. It's a daunting topic. The legendary nuclear physicist Niels Bohr once said, Those who are not shocked when they first come across quantum theory cannot possibly have understood it. Bernstein seamlessly interweaves the story of his own growing fascination with quantum theory and the people who were influential in nurturing his career with the theoretical conundrums that abound in quantum theory. He also is very eclectic in the sources he draws on to explain some of the more remarkable aspects of quantum theory: the Dalai Lama, W.H. Auden and the plays of Tom Stoppard all provide relevant points of interest. The scientific explanations that comprise much of the book—the problems of measurement and entanglement, how particles of energy and matter can become predictably correlated over great distances—are earnest and, because of the nature of the topic, unavoidably difficult for the uninitiated. But this is a labor of love, and serious science readers will find it worthwhile. (Oct.)

Former New Yorker science writer Jeremy Bernstein revisits his own encounters with the quantum world, first as a student at Harvard and then throughout his storied career, which features a cast of characters including W. H. Auden, J. Robert Oppenheimer and Tom Stoppard. Along the way, he discusses the strange intersections of quantum mechanics with Marxism and mysticism. No subject in recent memory has generated as much nonsense as the weird realm of quantum mechanics...The great science-writer Jeremy Bernstein provides a wonderful antidote in this lucid, witty book, which draws on his firsthand acquaintance with many of the principal players in the development of quantum theory. (John Wilson Christianity Today 2009-09-01)

[Bernstein's] exposition of the quantum conundrums is clear and bracing, and a stimulating challenge. Quantum Leaps is an intellectual curiosity, redolent of the strange mental landscape inhabited by the world's greatest intellects. (Peter Forbes The Independent 2010-01-07)

A rollicking romp through quantum connections
By Ash Jogalekar
Very few physicists have emphasized the human side of physics as well as Jeremy Bernstein. A veteran physicist and writer who has known many famous physicists of the twentieth century, Bernstein has penned highly readable portraits of Oppenheimer, Bethe and Einstein among others and has written books about nuclear weapons, quants on Wall Street, Bell Laboratories and the German atomic bomb project. In this book he explores the several ramifications of the strange proliferation of concepts from quantum mechanics into popular culture, theater, art, philosophy and cinema. Perhaps this proliferation is not surprising considering the bizarre implications of the actual meaning of quantum theory, but as Bernstein indicates, non-physicists have extended the reach of quantum concepts far beyond what the scientific creators of the theory would have intended.

Bernstein takes us through a diverse variety of topics and characters. He describes the Dalai Lama's writings in which he draws parallels between Buddhism and quantum theory, and this gives him an opportunity to talk about two central characters in the book, physicists John Bell and David Bohm who the Dalai Lama knew and who played crucial roles in the development of the interpretative parts of the discipline. Bernstein describes the famous conflict between Einstein and Bohr about the meaning of quantum theory and explains Bell's groundbreaking contributions that argued against Einstein's belief that quantum mechanics might be governed by some kind of "hidden variables" which we have to discover; Bell showed that any such hidden variable theory would have to involve superluminal communication and would be at odds with the theory of relativity. Later many remarkably precise experiments verified Bell's ideas, and Bell would almost certainly have received a Nobel Prize had he not died untimely of a stroke.

Bernstein also discusses the extension of quantum theory into non-scientific realms and describes the plays of the playwright Tom Stoppard (writer of "Hapgood" and "Arcadia"), who seems to have incorporated some concepts into his writing. Along the way Bernstein discusses the famous double slit experiment of quantum theory (best discussed in the Feynman Lectures on Physics) which inspired Stoppard and other writers including Princeton philosopher Rebecca Goldstein (author of "Incompleteness", a fascinating book about Kurt Godel) whose work Bernstein also describes. Bernstein also uses these narrative threads to talk about his own background at Harvard and Princeton where he came in contact with many of the key figures in the development of quantum physics. He has a clear and readable discussion of Bell's theorem and its background.

The last chapters in Bernstein's book talk about New Age-type expositions of quantum theory discussed by writers like Gary Zhukov and Fritjof Capra who seemingly find many parallels between the philosophical parts of the discipline and Eastern philosophy and mysticism. Bernstein is admittedly not very impressed with these interpretations as many of them sound rather fuzzy and devoid of concrete meaning. Perhaps Bernstein should have also taken a well-deserved jab at the New Age guru Deepak Chopra, whose use of quantum concepts seems to have been divined from thin air.

Readers might be forgiven for Bernstein's digressions which usually constitute a common part of his writings. For instance his first chapter is about his encounter with poet W H Auden and the philosopher Reinhold Niebuhr which seems to have little bearing on the rest of the book. A chapter on Niels Bohr's protege, the physicist Leon Rosenfeld, suddenly digresses into how quantum mechanics came in conflict with Soviet Marxism and dialectical materialism, and how Soviet physicists struggled to reconcile physics with their political ideology. A lot of this has to do with Bernstein's own background and it usually makes for interesting reading, but as in some of his other books, one cannot help shake off the feeling that Bernstein is trying to pack too much into the book and jumping from one topic to another with alacrity. However, I personally enjoy such digressions, and while some others may not, there is still enough interesting material in this slim book to keep most readers with a variety of interests hooked.

A Most Appropriate Title
By George Poirier
If one had to identify the basic theme of this book, one could say that it deals with the thoughts of people from varying backgrounds/professions on quantum theory and its implications. The author takes "quantum leaps" from one quantum sub-topic to another, all centering on these people's views on quantum theory: playwrights, authors (of novels, of new age books, etc.), artists, religious leaders (e.g., Dalai Lama), as well as the views of eminent physicists. The scientific explanations that are given throughout are generally quite clear, often including useful analogies. But, despite the fact that the book contains several discussions on various quantum phenomena, someone wanting to learn the basics of quantum theory should really look elsewhere. In addition to the science, the book also contains a fascinating agglomeration of snippets from the life of the author, including his interactions with some of the greatest luminaries in this field, as well as others. The writing style is clear, friendly, authoritative, relatively accessible and often quite captivating. Although anyone can read this book and learn quite a bit, it would likely be enjoyed the most by science buffs, especially those with a physics background, as well as those interested in the history of science.

Mozart in the Jungle: Sex, Drugs, and Classical Music, by Blair Tindall

In the tradition of Anthony Bourdain’s Kitchen Confidential and Gelsey Kirkland’s Dancing on My Grave, Mozart in the Jungle delves into the lives of the musicians and conductors who inhabit the insular world of classical music. In a book that inspired the Amazon Original series starring Gael Garca Bernal and Malcolm McDowell, oboist Blair Tindall recounts her decades-long professional career as a classical musician—from the recitals and Broadway orchestra performances to the secret life of musicians who survive hand to mouth in the backbiting New York classical music scene, where musicians trade sexual favors for plum jobs and assignments in orchestras across the city. Tindall and her fellow journeymen musicians often play drunk, high, or hopelessly hungover, live in decrepit apartments, and perform in hazardous conditions— working-class musicians who schlep across the city between low-paying gigs, without health-care benefits or retirement plans, a stark contrast to the rarefied experiences of overpaid classical musician superstars. An incisive, no-holds-barred account, Mozart in the Jungle is the first true, behind-the-scenes look at what goes on backstage and in the Broadway pit.

From Publishers Weekly
By age 16, the author of this alternately piquant and morose memoir was dealing marijuana, bedding her instructors at a performing arts high school and studying the oboe. Later, her blossoming career as a freelance musician in New York introduced her to a classical music demimonde of cocaine parties and group sex that had her wondering why she "got hired for so many of my gigs in bed." But the vivace of the chapters on her bohemian salad days subsides to a largo as she heads toward 40 and the sex and drugs recede along with dreams of stardom; the reality of a future in Broadway orchestra pits (where she reads magazines as she plays to stave off boredom) sets in. Tindall escaped to journalism, but her resentment of an industry that "squeezed me dry of spontaneity" and turns other musicians into hollow-eyed "galley slaves" is raw. She mounts a biting critique of the conservatories that churn out thousands of graduates each year to pursue a handful of jobs, the superstar conductors and soloists who lord it over orchestral peons and a fine arts establishment she depicts as bloated and ripe for downsizing. Tindall's bitterness over what might still strike many readers as a pretty great career is a bit overdone, but she offers a fresh, highly readable and caustic perspective on an overglamorized world. From The New Yorker
For the author, an oboist and journalist, a certain Upper West Side apartment building, long popular with musicians, is a metaphor for classical music in America today: a Beaux-Arts faade masking an increasingly decrepit infrastructure. Tindall's book, her first, is hardly free of false notes. Paragraphs full of dire predictions and alarming statistics jibe a little too conveniently with her tales of professional disappointment and sexual promiscuity. As Tindall sleeps her way to the bottom, we learn more than we probably need to about the sex lives of some more or less prominent American musicians. But Tindall's central complaint—that the classical-music world has created a crisis by training too many musicians and supporting a culture of exorbitant pay for a few fortunate stars—is difficult to refute.

candid, poignant, amusing, thought-provoking, a must-read.

About ten years ago, I watched a PBS nature program about a unique tribe of chimpanzees that besides eating plants, also hunts and eats monkeys. Monkey meat is rare and precious to the chimps. A chimp who manages to catch a monkey can't eat it all, and shares the meat with a few other chimps. The distribution of monkey meat always follows a distinct pattern. Meat is given to relatives, political supporters and sexually available young females. All the other chimps get none. This pattern sounded awfully familiar... what did it remind me of? Jobs in freelance classical music, of course!

The fact that Mozart in the Jungle provoked such passionate, articulate and conflicted reviews speaks volumes about its powerful effects on its readers. IMHO, the people who gave low ratings did so for questionable reasons (solipsism, hurt feelings, personal issues, denial, etc.), unrelated to the quality of Tindall's writing. Winning a couple of orchestra auditions straight out of Juilliard spared me from having to live in the vipers' pit of freelancing described in the book, but I saw enough to recognize it anyway. You can't make this stuff up. The narrative is captivating; I could hardly put the book down. Obviously, not all musicians live this way or have such extreme histories; you wouldn't want to read mine, for example, unless a soporific was indicated. This memoir is well worth reading; not necessarily for the juicy gossip, but for the human story and the larger issues it touches upon.

Great book, but the author is too charitable
By A+A
I attended both schools with Blair Tindall and witnessed much of what she described in this book. I can corroborate much that occured at both NCSA (North Carolina School of the Arts) and MSM (Manhattan School of Music). Her experience was not unique at all, but was the norm for students attending a performing arts high school (which also happened to have a college department where college students and teachers would prey on high school students, both female and male). My only criticism of this book is that she is actually TOO EASY on some of the teachers she mentions. Blair is actually quite charitable to them considering the appalling behavior we all endured on a day to day basis! She could have really raked them over the coals, but she chose to play nice, contrary to what some other reviewers have said. Blair must have suffered from having been a whistle-blower, but I applaud her bravery. It's also a really well-written book and I found it hard to put down.

About Blair
By Henri Renie
I want to make it clear for once and for all. Of the three oboe students of Mr. Robinson I remember, the least talented became a principal oboist of one of the top five orchestras. And Blair was by far the most talented of the three. Blair was that good. She was exceptional, golden, sparkling. She had star quality in spades. The next-best oboist I met has been with the Cleveland Orchestra for years. She was good enough to play in a top orchestra. She did not lack in musicality, tone quality, inspiration, personality or anything else. Chalk it up to misfortune or politics that she did not get such a position. Do not carp about her talent or try to minimize it. It is a great loss to music that she went on into other fields, but creative people may do that.
In that scene, many musicians were craven, most were desperate to get ahead no matter what, and there were no real moral standards at that time. One group was known to have had more or less of an orgy, which I believe made it into her book. The times were wild, free sex, drugs, alcohol. Not that everyone participated. And there was a tremendous amount of empty showing off, arrogance, egotism, manipulation, conspiracy, just about everything you could think of and then some. In many ways, New York in the 1980s was a reprehensible place.
