Wonderfully Easy to Read and Educational Book

You won't regret getting this book!
Gretchen Becker's "The First Year Type 2 Diabetes" is very well-organized, easy to read, and wonderfully educational. It is organized based on the information you need and the amount of detail you can assimilate -- in other words, first things first, with finer points and expanded details later in the book.
The information she presents includes the most recent research. She discusses the merits and myths of the most popular diets and treatments you will hear about.
I got her book when I was first diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, before talking with a diabetes educator or attending any classes on diabetes. By the time I was formally educated, I had already heard everything from Gretchen's book, and was also able to identify some dated traditional information. She really helped me understand why there isn't a consensus of opinion on the "best" diet for diabetics, and the source of many unfounded and/or unsubstantiated arguments for and against the popular approaches. For example, she discusses the pros and cons of the Food Pyramid (USDA, ADA), low-fat diets (Ornish, etc), exchange diets (ADA, Zone, Weight Watchers, etc), low-carb diets (Atkins, etc).
If you are in the "Your body, your science experiment" camp, she tells you several easy experiments to learn more about your own body processes various foods so you can take control and fine tune your own treatment.

Not JUST for the NEWLY diagnosed!

I have been dealing with my Type 2 diabetes for about 5 years and I recently ordered this book ..and I learned more from it than from anywhere since I was diagnosed. This is a clear, accurate, and extremely informative book. I go back and re read parts of it often and it has really made a big difference for me.. This is a disease that is difficult to understand correctly, even if you have had it a while, like I have. The up-to-date research behind this book is obvious and it is presented in a truly intelligent and articulate manner. Ms. Becker totally understands type 2 diabetes, and has been extremely helpful in my understanding of it too. How I wish I had had this book when I was first diagnosed - even just the title of the first chapter "It's not your fault" is so important - it allowed me to let go of some of the guilt and self reproach I had. No one ever told me that before! This book is *essential* for all newly diagnosed Type 2's and for the NOT SO NEWLY diagnosed too! You will have a whole new understanding of type 2 diabetes as well as empathetic support and clear information about how to help manage your diabetes. A great book!

Highly recommended for all newly diagnosed

Having just learned that I have type 2 diabetes, I couldn't ask for a better book to refer to than THE FIRST YEAR. The book is written from the first days, weeks, and months and the order is perfect for what (at least) I have been going through. Becker understands that the reader doesn't really want to get too deep in details about the illness but tells enough that anyone can get a better picture as to what is going on with their body.
The book is broken down by living and learning. One section that I found very informative is about the meters. I had no idea that they are affected by elevation. I travel to a mountainous area every year and needed to know this.
I can't say enough about this book. Anyone who is newly diagnosed with this disease should get this book and get information your doctor or educator may not tell you.

Best ever on this author

Deeply impressive, this book tells the story of Jean Genet from sources that Edmund White garnered from all over France. Known first for his poetry, then novels, then his plays, then his works in criticism, Genet was an anomaly in world literature. He endlessly revised his work, sometimes then withdrawing them after many years of them being read and performed. Mercurial, unhappy, he rarely really lived anywhere, but lived around the world in hotel rooms, having his mail delivered to his publisher. His life peaked early; his novels were well received as modernist works, and his plays were performed world-wide. After that, he repudiated much of what he'd done, and worked for the downtrodden of the world -- the Palestinians, the Black Panthers. It is an oftentimes touching story, although as a person Genet was not much the icon to be admired. White knows that and while admiring the works, the man is thoroughly examined and is lacking in the final analysis.

Sexy and funny medical read

Medical short stories are one of my fav genres and "Doctor Gay" is a great read. Robert is struggling with questions about his sexuality and a friend recommends he go to Doctor Gay to get some answers. Though the treatment is unconventional, Doctor Gay gives Robert the answers he seeks and more! The story is very well written and the sex scenes are SCORCHING HOT! Can there be a follow up with Doctor Gay, please?

I loved it! Dr. Gay is very professional and gets straight to the point! I wish it had been a full book, I'd love to read about how Dr. Gay got started and how he set up his practice. The writing was wonderful and I will be following Tabatha from now on. Thanks for the "sample", looking forward to buying more of your books.

Read This Book and Make Values Stick!

The Values Book is an excellent source of information and activities to encourage values in your child. The authors cite changes in modern culture and use fun, creative methods to instill traditional values. Each chapter begins with a familiar rhyme recognizing a particular value. The authors then define the value, and discuss why it is important in a child's life. Ways to talk about the value are included, and activities to reinforce the value are suggested. At the end of each chapter, extra resources are listed concerning the value discussed. In an easy-to-read format, the book discusses 16 values like loyalty, respect, patience and cooperation. Parents will appreciate advice for ways children may react to values, and teachers will be pleased to find helpful hints to celebrate values in the classroom. Children will benefit from the home activities, like growing a garden and making up new solutions to problems seen on television. In addition to improving their grasp on teaching specific principles, parents themselves may find they have gained a better respect for values. Through helping children incorporate values in their everyday lives, parents will play a key role model for making the teachings stick with their children for years.

The Values Book

Except for the rampant nostalgia for 1910, when times were "simpler" and apparently nobody was concerned with teaching their children values, because back then it was naturally absorbed into every child's brain because of the stellar air quality, complete lack of social violence, and excellent parenting skills [please see the first point for parents in nearly every chapter if you have no clue to what I am referring), book was pretty decent.

The layout was smooth and organized with ideas for a variety of situations. Each of the values that were covered are applicable and important, while the points and activities were thoughtful.

My only wish is that the 'Thoughts for Parents' sections didn't assume that everybody reading it had no intrapersonal skills and that it stopped relying on a nostalgic fallacy. Things weren't necessarialy awesome in the past, we just talk about the craptastic parts a bit more openly and visibly.

Good book for teaching kids

This is an excellent tool for teaching kids about values. It has many examples and some role paying which is effective. Love it!
